The next day, Gu Yueji didn't wake up until almost noon.
She shifted her body, feeling that every part of her was aching—headache, backache, foot pain, mouth pain. She closed her eyes and groaned in pain, but before she could recall what had happened, a hand reached out and wrapped around her waist.
With a start, Gu Yueji opened her eyes abruptly and turned to look at the person behind her.
Ren Jin had just woken up, his eyes still blurry as he looked at Gu Yueji, who seemed to have seen a ghost. He said lazily, "You were screaming so loudly last night you almost lifted the roof off. Now you don't even recognize me?"
Gu Yueji rubbed her head, feeling a headache coming on, but also breathed a sigh of relief.
Seeing him in bed made her feel more at ease than seeing anyone else.
She could already feel that their two bodies, pressed together, were naked. She turned over and stared at the ceiling, recalling what had happened last night.
Her memories slowly returned. She saw Sun Ziru's boyfriend at the restaurant. Ren Jin took her away from the hotel to a bar, where she started drinking. She cried while leaning on the bar counter. Then her memories became blurry and chaotic. She hugged and kissed him in the car, and then they went home. These fragments were intermittent but still present.
Seeing her deep in thought, Ren Jin teased her, "Well, do you remember now? Did you take advantage of me or did I take advantage of you?"
Gu Yueji ignored him. "It was just a one-night stand. Nobody took advantage of anyone. You can leave when you wake up." With that, she turned her back to go back to sleep. She hadn't done this in a long time and was really tired.
Ren Jin, however, held her back, saying, "I think you didn't remember everything. Do you remember what you said to me last night?"
Gu Yueji was sleepy and tired, and shook her head as she looked at him.
He stood up and leaned on her, pinching her cheek. "Let me help you remember."
He looked into her eyes, mimicking her tone from the night before, and asked softly, "Can you give me a home?"
Gu Yueji froze, shocked by his sudden confession, which was about the very thing she longed for most.
After a few seconds of mental blankness, some images flashed through my mind: me rambling on and on to him, me hugging him and crying, me clutching his clothes and crying as I asked him if he could give me a home.
The light in her eyes gradually dimmed, and she rubbed her throbbing head. "I was drunk last night, you don't have to take it seriously."
He shook his head. "You even found your household registration booklet for me last night, so I can't just ignore it." As he spoke, he touched the dark red booklet on the bedside table and showed it to her.
Gu Yueji took the household registration book and opened it. It really was her name inside. She sighed speechlessly, "You really don't need to take it seriously. I don't remember it at all."
But he suddenly said seriously, "But I have decided to marry you."
Gu Yueji stared at him blankly, looking incredulous.
“I knew you’d go back on your word, so I recorded a video last night.” He got up, took his phone, opened the photo album, and showed her a video.
Gu Yueji sat up, clutching the blanket, and the first thing she saw made her blush.
He clearly took this picture with his phone while they were doing it. Although you can only see her face and a bit of her bare shoulder, and nothing else, her flushed cheeks and the moans coming out of her mouth are so loud that you can't bear to look at them or even hear them.
She reached for the phone to delete it, but Ren Jin raised it high to stop her, saying, "We haven't gotten to the point yet."
"Are you crazy? How could you record this?!"
"I noticed that I didn't capture any nudity on the camera."
"You can't film that!"
As soon as I grabbed the phone, his voice came through, breathless, "Shall we get married tomorrow?"
Gu Yueji paused, the camera suddenly switching to a side view of the two of them, covered by a blanket.
He bent his arm and rested it on the side of her head, looking down at her. She looked back at him, but seemed lost in thought and didn't answer.
He was annoyed and nipped at her mischievously; she clung to his shoulder and snorted.
He asked again, "Shall we get married tomorrow?"
She still looked at him without saying a word. He pressed himself close to her, and just when she thought he was about to do something mischievous again, he gently wiped the corner of her eye with his thumb and urged softly, "Answer me."
Just looking at her phone screen made Gu Yueji's heart tremble.
The image shows the viewer pursing their lips, swallowing, and finally choking out, "Okay."
He laughed. "Tell me yourself, who are you going to marry tomorrow?"
This time she answered quickly, "I'm getting married to Ren Jin tomorrow."
He burst into laughter. "Remember this, I proposed, and you said yes. This is proof." He then leaned down and kissed her deeply. She wrapped her arms around his neck and responded passionately. The final image shows him smiling broadly as he reaches for his phone.
Ren Jin took back his phone, waved it in front of her, and said, "The evidence is conclusive, isn't it? You can't deny it now, can you?"
Gu Yueji was still confused and uncertain. After a while, she looked at him and asked, "Why do you want to marry me?"
He looked at her, as if she had been prepared to answer his question, "Because you want a home, and so do I."
It wasn't some sweet talk like "I love you" or "I want to be with you forever," but this reason struck a chord with Gu Yueji.
She doesn't need those mushy words, and she no longer believes in promises embellished with sweet talk by men. All she wants is someone who also longs for a family and is willing to build a home with her.
He put down his phone, took her hand, and said, "Let me tell you about my situation. I'm from a local rural area. I dropped out of high school and started working. I didn't go to university, and now I'm a foreman on a construction site. Because of the pandemic, the construction sites are closed, so I deliver food when I'm not working. I have no debt, and I own three houses, two shops, and a car. My savings are in several bank accounts, and I haven't calculated the total amount. My parents divorced when I was very young and remarried. I was raised by my grandparents. My parents never cared about me growing up, and after my grandparents passed away a few years ago, I had no home. So when I said I wanted to have a home with you, I meant it. I want a complete home of my own. How about we build one together?"
