Gu Yueji glanced at the watch on the man's wrist. She didn't know the brand, but the color and shape looked very similar to the ones she had seen on short videos. It was called something like "Submariner," and it cost hundreds of thousands of yuan. Her car key had a leaping horse on it, which she recognized—it was a Ferrari.
She asked uncertainly, "Are you referring to yourself when you say you have another chance to choose?"
The man's oily face and his eyes darted around Gu Yueji, a lewd smile playing on his lips as he hinted, "That depends on whether you can seize this opportunity."
Gu Yueji found the man's trusting demeanor amusing and asked curiously, "So, if I choose you, what can you give me?"
The man deliberately placed his wrist, the one with the watch, on the table. "What do you think? Aren't my conditions laid out right here?"
Gu Yueji didn't mince words with him and asked clearly, "So, given your terms, how much can you actually give me?"
The man frowned in displeasure.
In the past, whenever he saw these things that displayed his wealth, women would come to him without him even having to say a word. This was the first time he had encountered a woman so blatantly chasing after him to negotiate terms, and he felt that Gu Yueji was truly ungrateful.
Ignoring the man's expression, Gu Yueji changed her question and asked, "What's the most expensive thing you've ever given a woman?"
The man answered quickly this time, glancing at Gu Yueji with a smug look, "One car."
However, this only earned her a disappointed look from Gu Yueji. "Is it just a car?"
The man's displeasure became even more apparent, and he sneered contemptuously, "A car worth several hundred thousand isn't enough? I didn't realize you had such a big appetite."
Gu Yueji smiled faintly, her tone extremely calm, but every word was laced with sarcasm, "Just for a car worth a few hundred thousand, you want me to abandon my husband who is taller and more handsome than you, and give up a happy marriage? Are you out of your mind, or do you think I'm out of my mind?"
The man's face immediately turned red. "I own several buildings that I rent out. If you're lucky enough to marry me, you'll never have to worry about food or clothing for the rest of your life!"
Gu Yueji raised an eyebrow. "Would you be willing to give me a few units from those buildings?"
The man couldn't answer again.
Gu Yueji looked as if she had expected this, "You don't want even one set, right? Well, that makes sense. After all, these buildings are the lifeblood of your family for generations to come. Even if you get them, you won't have the ability to earn them back."
Humiliated, the man slammed his fist on the table. "What did you say! I've seen plenty of women like you. You think you're so great just because you're a little pretty? The fact that I even noticed you is already incredibly lucky for you! Who do you think you are!"
Who are you yelling at?! Huh!
Gu Yueji and the man looked up at the same time in surprise.
Ren Jin strode over with a gloomy expression, his imposing presence causing the man to shrink back involuntarily.
"What do you want to do?" The man's voice became soft.
Ren Jin looked down at him condescendingly, "You dare say those same things you just said to my wife again? Do you dare?!"
He had been back for a while. At first, when he heard the man's shameless talk about stealing his girlfriend, he was so angry that he wanted to punch him. But when he saw Gu Yueji protecting him, he suppressed his anger and watched silently from the side. It wasn't until the man was so embarrassed and angry after being confronted by Gu Yueji that he slammed his fist on the table that he came out to protect her.
"Get out of here now if you don't want to get beaten up! Otherwise, I don't mind spending money to make you spend the New Year in the hospital. Do you want to try?" Ren Jin's tone was contemptuous, looking at the man as if he were a piece of trash.
The man was too proud to back down, so he remained seated.
Ren Jin braced himself on the table, staring at him with a piercing gaze. "Do you want me to count to three?"
Ren Jin was muscular and strong, with bulging muscles on his arms. The man considered his chances of winning a fight with Ren Jin, then pushed Ren Jin away and left dejectedly.
After the man left, Ren Jin's expression didn't soften immediately. He hugged Gu Yueji and drank a few sips of cocktail. Suddenly, he asked Gu Yueji,
Have you ever thought about marrying a man with better prospects?
Gu Yueji was stunned; she hadn't expected Ren Jin to care about that man's words.
She placed her hand on his chest and chuckled lightly as she jokingly asked, "What's wrong? Why is my husband suddenly so insecure?"
Ren Jin thought of the Ferrari car key and expensive watch in the man's hand. To be honest, he would never own those two things in his life, and he could never give them to Gu Yueji.
He said with a hint of bitterness, "Everyone has the right to pursue a better life."
Gu Yueji had originally intended to joke with him, but seeing his serious expression, she was completely stunned. How could he have overthought things?
She rested her head on his chest, and after a long while, she spoke softly, "When I was doing a live stream before, someone messaged me saying they wanted to be my sugar daddy, offering 50,000 a month."
Ren Jin was taken aback and looked down at Gu Yueji. He hadn't expected that such a thing would happen.
"Then what?"
Gu Yueji pouted in dissatisfaction, "What then? If there were a then, would I still be working so hard to sell goods through live streaming to pay off my debts, and then run into you while ordering takeout?"
Ren Jin recalled her embarrassed state at that time and gently patted her back with heartache. She was so tired and under so much pressure. He wondered how much effort she had put in and how long she had struggled to resist those temptations.
Gu Yueji felt his heartache and comfort, and the slight bitterness in her heart dissipated.
“Actually, there was a time when I was so pressured by debt collectors that I really thought about giving up. I thought I should just give up and stop being so tired. What's the point of agreeing? But another voice in my head asked me, ‘I’ve worked so hard and risked breaking with my family to leave the mountains, just to live this kind of life?’ So I was not reconciled. If I was really afraid of hardship and fatigue, I should have just gotten married back in my hometown. Later, I realized that this is not what I want. If I ever give up my previous persistence because of money or wanting to live an easier life, I would feel sorry for myself who has suffered so much to get to where I am today.”
That was right after I broke up with Ye Zurong, during my darkest time. Then he suddenly appeared, and eventually we got married, and everything changed.
"Honey, I'm so grateful to you. You've never treated me like a woman who has to depend on you for survival. You never blame me when I'm busy with work and can't take good care of you. You even give me money to start my own factory. You help me realize my value and achieve my goals. You even asked me if I've ever thought about finding a better man."
Gu Yueji lifted her head from his embrace, raised her fingers to gently stroke his handsome face, and looked up at him, "How could you lack confidence? You are my best choice. Marrying you is the best decision I've ever made in my life."
Ren Jin was stunned by her sudden confession. His heart was filled with bubbles of nectar, which were beautiful, fragrant and unforgettable.
Seeing him staring intently at her, Gu Yueji shyly raised herself up and gave him a peck on the lips. "How is it? Did I make you happy?"
Ren Jin gazed deeply at her, "I'm happy, but I'm even happier to have married you."
Gu Yueji's eyes gradually gathered starlight, just like the night view of this ancient city.
As she raised her chin to kiss him, Ren Jin lowered his head and captured her lips, whispering something to her.
"You are the treasure I've unearthed."
