Today, Ren Jin accompanied Gu Yueji to her prenatal checkup. Even though they arrived early, the rows of seats in front of the examination room were already full when they got there.
It's only after having a child that you realize how difficult it is to bring a life into the world; the various prenatal checkups alone are exhausting enough.
Ren Jin helped Gu Yueji up, glanced at the queue for a number in the examination room, and wondered how long the wait would be. He then turned and searched the seats, saying to Gu Yueji, "Wait here for me for a while, I'll go find you a seat."
"No need, I'll be fine standing here for a while."
"Don't stand there for too long, I'll be right back."
As he spoke, Ren Jin walked to a row of seats on the side, where a couple was sitting and playing on their phones.
Ren Jin walked up to her husband, who was playing a game, and said, "Hello."
The man was taken aback and looked up at Ren Jin with a puzzled expression.
Ren Jin pointed at Gu Yueji and said, "My wife has a long wait for her prenatal checkup. Could you give her a seat? She's pregnant and can't stand for that long."
The man followed Ren Jin's finger and looked at Gu Yueji.
Gu Yueji was over five months pregnant, her belly was noticeably protruding, but she was still fair-skinned and slender. When she saw the man looking over, she smiled and nodded politely, her whole demeanor serene and gentle.
The man shifted his feet, preparing to stand up, but his wife objected, saying, "It's my turn to be checked soon. Let's go inside and then you can have your seats."
Ren Jin shifted his gaze and saw that the woman's phone was still playing video, and she was glaring at her husband with displeasure.
Ren Jin explained, "I don't need to sit. Your husband just needs to give his wife a seat."
The woman still disagreed, saying, "My husband is also very tired; he has to go to work later."
Ren Jin slowly straightened up, knowing that it would take a long time for her to examine him. It was obvious that she didn't want him to give in. Although he was angry, it was understandable, and he couldn't argue with a pregnant woman.
Looking up to search for the next spot, the woman continued scrolling through her phone, muttering, "What's wrong with standing here for a bit? She's acting like she's some kind of precious treasure."
Ren Jin looked down, puzzled. "We're all pregnant women. Can't you put yourself in our shoes? Doesn't your back hurt from standing with that big belly? Don't you want to sit down and rest for a while after standing for so long?"
The woman scoffed, "I've stood on the subway for ages and it's nothing, I'm not that dramatic."
Seeing that the situation was not right, Gu Yueji quickly walked to Ren Jin's side. "Honey, I don't want to sit here. It's a bit stuffy. Come with me to get some fresh air over there."
Ren Jin took her hand and asked with concern, "Do you feel like throwing up again?"
Gu Yueji moved closer to him and shook her head.
The woman's gaze swept from Gu Yueji's feet to her face. Although both were pregnant, Gu Yueji looked as thin as a young girl from behind. She wore an elegant, loose-fitting long dress and a pair of rhinestone-studded sandals. Her fair face was radiant with a healthy glow. She looked at the tall and handsome Ren Jin beside her, who was extremely attentive to her, practically wearing the words "I love my wife" on his face.
Unlike her, who was wearing slippers and a loose T-shirt, with a dull complexion and freckles, her husband had finally taken half a day off to accompany her to her prenatal checkup, but he didn't know anything and could only stand there. She had to wait a long time to get this seat, and she was reluctant to give it up even though her husband was willing to do so.
Unexpectedly, the man complained to her, "We're all pregnant and working so hard, what's wrong with giving up your seat? Why are you being so stingy?"
The woman got even angrier upon hearing this, "You know how hard it is for other people to be pregnant, but how many times have you accompanied me to my prenatal checkups when I was six months pregnant? When I was tired, why didn't you find me a seat? Now that I've finally gotten a seat, you're pretending to be kind. Who do you care about? Who's your wife?!"
Gu Yueji didn't want to get involved in other people's marital quarrel, so she pulled Ren Jin to the door and window.
Ren Jin looked at the angry woman and felt completely baffled. "What's wrong with giving up a seat? Is it necessary to get so angry?"
Gu Yueji sighed understandingly, "She didn't get angry because she gave up her seat."
Ren Jin gently tucked her loose hair behind her ear. "Why is that?"
They stood at the busy entrance, with Ren Jin on the outside, shielding her against the wall, his hand on her waist, his tall frame acting like a wall to block out the people outside.
Gu Yueji clutched his shirt at the waist with a look of dependence, “Because she’s not as lucky as me to have such a considerate husband as you.”
Ren Jin accompanied her to every prenatal checkup. He even remembered the dates of each checkup more clearly than she did. He knew the process of each checkup, which examination item was to be performed in which clinic, and he knew it all. Every time she came, he would find a seat for her first and then go to queue up to get a number. It was because of his companionship and care that she experienced so much anxiety and bad mood during her pregnancy.
From the pregnant woman's words, it's clear that she had to rely on herself for everything, and she had worked hard to find the seat. So how could she be so forgiving? Therefore, you can't blame the pregnant woman for her bad temper; you can only blame her inactive husband.
Ren Jin glanced back at her husband, who was still playing games, and understood what Gu Yueji meant, but he didn't care. He only cared about the person in front of him. "Are you tired? Why don't you go and rest in the car first? I'll call you when we're almost there."
Gu Yueji laughed, "Why do you treat me like a clay doll? I'm not that fragile."
Ren Jin glanced down at her sideways, "I wonder who fainted earlier?"
Gu Yueji stuck out her tongue and chuckled, "I'm perfectly fine now. The doctor said that both my baby and I are very healthy."
Ren Jin held her close. Fortunately, she was doing well; apart from severe morning sickness a while ago, all her test results were normal.
