The next morning, Ren Jin was washing up in the bathroom when Gu Yueji sat in front of his suitcase, picking and choosing, trying to find him a more understated outfit to wear when he went home to meet his parents. But after searching for a long time, she found that the suitcase was full of new clothes she had bought for him, not a single old one. Suddenly, she felt a little resentful towards herself, thinking that she shouldn't have bought him so many expensive clothes.
As soon as the bathroom door opened, Gu Yueji looked up and complained to him, "Why didn't you bring a single old piece of clothing? What's the point of bringing so many expensive clothes to a rural place like this!"
Ren Jin was taken aback, glancing at the clothes she had turned up. "I was just thinking of dressing nicely so you could save face, wasn't I?"
"You're wearing all designer clothes. What are you going to wear to my house today?"
Ren Jin bent down, pulled her up, and led her away from the suitcase with his arm around her shoulder. "I haven't been to a market in a long time. Will you come with me to go for a walk?"
"How can you still be in the mood to stroll through the market?!"
Ren Jin kissed her cheek and asked, puzzled, "Why don't I feel like going to the market? Why do you look so anxious?"
Gu Yueji was taken aback before realizing that she was indeed anxious and throwing a tantrum for no reason.
To be honest, she was a little nervous. This was the first time Ren Jin had visited her home to meet her parents. Although Ren Jin already knew about her family, she was still afraid that this meeting would lead to unpleasantness or even conflict, and that her parents would embarrass Ren Jin.
They sat down on the sofa in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Ren Jin picked her up and placed her on his lap, looking down into her eyes. "What are you worried about?"
Gu Yueji was stunned for a moment, then slowly calmed down under his deep gaze, and whispered, "I'm afraid you won't like me because of my parents."
Ren Jin was taken aback, finding her idea difficult to understand. "Why would you think that?"
Gu Yueji lowered her eyes and leaned against his chest.
Actually, when she was with Ye Zurong before, Ye Zurong had a lot of complaints about her family. On the one hand, he felt sorry for her because her parents didn't care about her and she had to work part-time to support herself during college. On the other hand, he looked down on her because of her parents.
Once, when Ye Zurong was chatting with his parents about her, Gu Yueji deliberately hid and eavesdropped. His parents asked her about her height, age, education, and family background as if they were investigating her background. Ye Zurong answered truthfully, without covering up for her or embellishing her story.
When the topic of wedding dowry came up, Ye Zurong casually remarked that her parents didn't care about her, and that she might not even receive any gifts from her family when she got married, let alone any dowry.
The disdain in his tone made Gu Yueji feel that Ye Zurong was a complete stranger for the first time. It was also the first time she realized that Ye Zurong looked down on her because of her family background.
She had no family background or support from her own family, which were reasons for being looked down upon by her husband's family.
Although Ren Jin knew about her family situation, when he saw how her parents treated her, did he also become less appreciative of her? After all, even his own parents treated her this way.
Seeing that she was keeping her head down and not speaking, Ren Jin grabbed her chin and lifted it up. "Are you stupid? Are you out of your mind? Are my parents good to me? Do you dislike me because of my parents?"
Gu Yueji was forced to look at him, and pouted in grievance.
He's different. He's already very good-looking, with a great physique, a calm yet humorous personality, high emotional intelligence, and good financial standing. He doesn't need his parents to be an asset.
Thinking about this, Gu Yueji realized that she actually felt inferior in front of Ren Jin.
She suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck, tilted her head back, and pressed her nose against his, demanding, "You said you liked me, but you never said that."
This sudden display of coquettishness stunned Ren Jin. What was she up to? He couldn't react for a moment.
Gu Yueji didn't know why, but she just wanted to ask him to say "I like you" to calm her anxiety. She felt shy the moment she said it, but sitting in his lap and seeing his bewildered expression, she didn't feel shy at all. In fact, she found his silly antics cute.
Gu Yueji took the opportunity to give him a heavy peck on the lips, and asked in feigned anger, "Are you going to tell me or not?"
Ren Jin was amused by her childlike behavior and played along, touching her lips together. "I like you, I like you, only you, is that enough?"
He said this with a smile, as if he were coaxing her. Gu Yueji was not satisfied. "Not enough. Keep talking until I tell you to stop."
Ren Jin pecked her lips repeatedly, "If you keep doing this, we won't go to the market."
He was already starting to feel a little aroused by her.
Gu Yueji immediately covered his mouth warily, "You really want to go to the market?"
Ren Jin pulled her hand down. "Go to the market and buy me some clothes. That way, you won't have to worry about not finding clothes for me to wear, and you won't have to worry about your parents finding out."
Gu Yueji's eyes lit up. "That's right, we can buy ready-made clothes. How come I didn't think of that?"
Ren Jin pinched her nose. "You're not usually this stupid. Looks like I need to take you home soon, or you'll become stupid if you stay here too long."
It had been a long time since she'd visited the local market in her hometown, and Gu Yueji was happier than ever before. She pulled Ren Jin along, showing him some items and foods she rarely saw. Ren Jin accompanied her, and she looked at this and tried that with great interest. Along the way, she happily bought quite a few impractical things, all of which she took first, while Ren Jin paid for them.
Gu Yueji only started picking out clothes for Ren Jin at the very end of the shopping trip. Mainly because he seemed to be able to wear anything without being picky about his figure and appearance, so he quickly picked out some. At such a cheap price, Gu Yueji almost couldn't resist buying him a couple more items, but Ren Jin stopped her in the end.
Gu Yueji tugged at Ren Jin's newly bought down jacket. Because they wanted to pretend they had no money, the Land Rover was parked at the hotel and hadn't been driven back to the village. They were now waiting by the roadside for the village bus to take them home.
"You look quite handsome in this outfit. It seems I won't need to buy you expensive clothes anymore, which will save me a lot of money," Gu Yueji teased.
Ren Jin nodded indifferently, "I have no objection, as long as you are satisfied."
Sitting on the minibus back to the village, the engine roared in the carriage, and the cold wind howled through the windows that couldn't be closed. Gu Yueji noticed that Ren Jin was looking out the window and seemed quite happy.
"What are you laughing at?" Gu Yueji asked, pointing at the corner of his upturned mouth.
Ren Jin turned his gaze from the window, took her hand, and said, "I haven't ridden in a car like this in a long time. You've brought back memories of my childhood."
"You've ridden in this kind of vehicle before?"
"I used to take one of these minibuses to and from school. The bus was always full of classmates; it was so lively."
Gu Yueji rarely heard him talk about school. "Do you like school? How are your grades?"
"He doesn't like anything, only loves to play, his grades are terrible, a total academic failure."
Gu Yueji pouted at him, "Then you can't teach the children in the future."
Ren Jin chuckled and pinched her chin. "Don't we have you as our mother?"
Although they were a legally married couple and having children was a normal thing, Gu Yueji still felt embarrassed by his words.
