Gu Yueji led Ren Jin home and stood at the door calling out, "Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Grandma, we're back!"
The room was quiet and no one answered.
Gu Yueji walked into the house in confusion, only to find that there was no one there.
"Where did they go? I told them we went home at noon."
While browsing the market, Gu Yueji called home to say that Ren Jin had come over and they would be going home together in a bit.
After her initial surprise, He Mei immediately became unhappy and actually told Gu Yueji to send Ren Jin away and not bring him home.
Gu Yueji was furious when she heard this. She knew what her mother was afraid of: if Ren Jin were to be seen by the Sun family, her plan to marry him off to Sun Xiaoming would be ruined.
That's why she has to bring Ren Jin home today.
So she confronted He Mei, saying that she was determined to bring Ren Jin home today. If they didn't let Ren Jin into the house, she would leave her hometown with him and return to G City, and they could forget about her coming back.
He Mei angrily shouted her name and was about to argue with her again, but was suddenly stopped. Then, her father, Gu Nianwang, came through the phone, his voice broken. It was unclear what he said to He Mei, but when He Mei spoke again, she actually agreed to let her bring Ren Jin home and even asked when they would arrive.
Gu Yueji found it strange, but thinking that she would deal with whatever came her way, she said she would be home before noon.
There's no one home right now. Could they be hiding on purpose?
"I'm calling my parents."
Gu Yueji took out her phone to make a call, but Ren Jin grabbed her hand and interrupted her, "It's okay, they're probably out on business. As the new son-in-law, it's my first time visiting my parents-in-law, so there's no reason for me to rush them. Anyway, we're not in a hurry. Why don't you show me around the house?"
Gu Yueji looked at the gifts Ren Jin was carrying. He had brought them from G City. Although he didn't like them, he had thought of and done everything he could to show respect and courtesy to his parents-in-law. On the other hand, her parents didn't want Ren Jin to marry into their family.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. She refused to believe that her parents would keep hiding and not come home. She was just waiting to see what kind of trouble they were going to cause.
"Okay, let me show you around my house."
Gu Yueji's family lived in a two-story building, which was built before Gu Yueji was born and looked somewhat dilapidated.
"The first floor is the living room, kitchen, my grandparents' room and my room. The second floor is my parents' and Jia Hui's room."
There wasn't much to see in the kitchen or the grandparents' room, so they went straight to the living room, where, like many rural families, one wall was covered with certificates of merit.
Ren Jin walked to the wall of awards and looked up. Sure enough, he saw Gu Yueji's name, but her awards were yellowed and faded, and some words were no longer legible.
Gu Yueji followed his gaze and said, "That was a long time ago."
"No wonder he's a top student; he was number one in first grade." Ren Jin praised him generously.
Gu Yueji looked at the certificate and said, "What's so special about being first in first grade?"
She won some provincial competitions when she was in middle school, but by then the walls were already covered with Jia Hui's annual end-of-term awards, so there was no room for hers.
Ren Jin scanned Gu Yueji's certificates one by one, "I've never won first place since I was a child."
"It's nothing to get first place." Gu Yueji subconsciously tried to comfort him.
Ren Jin shrugged and said indifferently, "You don't need to comfort me. Whether I get first place or not is not important to me. I have never aspired to study hard and go to university since I was a child. What I want is to make money and live a good life."
Gu Yueji was taken aback for a moment, then smiled knowingly.
The saying "great talents can emerge from humble backgrounds" refers to families with lower social standing and influence, not the poor. Children born in impoverished rural areas like Ren Jin might be able to leave the mountains by studying hard, getting into university, finding a decent job or a government job, and living a stable life. But it is very difficult and rare for them to accumulate the wealth that Ren Jin has.
"Where is your boudoir?" Ren Jin suddenly turned to her and asked.
Gu Yueji blushed slightly upon hearing the word "boudoir," and said, "What do you mean by 'boudoir'?"
Ren Jin leaned closer to her, raising an eyebrow suggestively, "Do you understand the pleasures of the bedroom?"
Gu Yueji was startled by him. "What are you thinking? This is my parents' house. They can come back at any time."
Ren Jin smiled, but looked completely innocent. "I just wanted to see what you used to do or watch in your room. I just wanted to go to your room to take a look. What are you thinking?"
Gu Yueji knew he was teasing her on purpose, and pushed his face away in annoyance and embarrassment.
She led him to a door in the corner of the corridor, and before opening it, she turned to him and said, "If you want to see my bedroom pleasures, you're in for a disappointment."
Then she pushed open the door and saw an empty room with a bed, a wardrobe, a bedside table, and no other personal items.
"Is this your room?" Ren Jin walked in, looked around, and asked, puzzled.
The place where I've lived for over a decade should bear some trace of her, even if it's just a notebook she wrote in or a photograph.
Gu Yueji explained, “I didn’t contact my family for several years while I was in college. When my mother’s relatives came to visit and there was nowhere for them to stay, my mother got angry and threw away all my things in my room, making it empty for her family to stay in.”
When Gu Yueji returned home and saw the empty room, she was stunned. Her desk where she used to do her homework, the cartoon stickers on the wall, the small items in the drawers that were full of childhood memories, and the clothes in the closet were all gone.
He Mei also mocked her, saying that since she longed for the outside world so much, she probably wouldn't care about the things in this small room anymore, so she helped her throw them away.
