Chapter 5

"Is that what you think? Don't accept charity?" Yao Chunnuan stared at Wang Lang intently. He'd survived to the end, fought back from a desperate situation, surely he hadn't been calculating? Their enemies knew how to hunt down the big ones and let the small ones go, but was he planning to hate everyone who had wronged him and the Wang family? What a damned naive arrogance.

"Hate me for abandoning you?"

Wang Chao pursed his lips. As a family member, she was afraid of death and abandoned her husband and children. Shouldn't they be angry and hate her?

Seeing his expression, Yao Chunnuan shook her head inwardly. He was indeed still a child, with a simple mind. Even at this time, he was still brooding over such trivial matters.

Wang Lang didn't say anything and had no expression on his face. It was difficult for her to tell what was on his face.

But it doesn’t matter, her conversation with Wang Chao is the same.

The journey was tiring, so Yao Chunnuan simply leaned against the prison wall and said casually, "You don't have to be so resentful towards me, acting like I've taken advantage of the Wang family."

"You should know that I saved your second brother's life. The Wang family wants to repay you, and the Yao family is asking him to marry me. It's not too much, right? Although our statuses are not equal, he is from a noble family, but if I hadn't saved him, he might not be here anymore. Isn't your second brother's life worth the position of a wife for the second son of your Wang family?" From reluctantly accepting the marriage proposal to welcoming the girl into the family, the Wang family dragged on for nearly a year.

The Wang family remained silent, which was the main reason why they were willing to compromise.

"What kind of person am I in your opinion?" Yao Chunnuan asked.

Wang Chao didn't understand why she asked this, but it didn't stop him from despising her. Don't you know what kind of person you are?

Facing his contempt, Yao Chunnuan continued, "In your opinion, I'm vain and greedy for fame and fortune, right?"

"Aren't you such a person?" Wang Chao couldn't help but say.

"Yes, I am. I didn't say I wasn't." Yao Chunnuan admitted it straightforwardly.

Wang Chao was stunned. He couldn't believe that this woman actually said that about herself! Did she conduct a deep self-reflection after abandoning them?

Wang Lang frowned slightly, not understanding what this woman was up to!

Yao Chunnuan continued, "I've been married into the Wang family for half a year. Firstly, your second brother doesn't have much affection for me, and secondly, I don't have any children. Now the Wang family is like a quagmire. I'm leaving on my own, severing ties with them. It might seem a bit heartless, but it's also human nature, right?"

The original owner had been married for half a year, and she still hadn't developed any feelings for the Wang family. They treated her with indifference, not rude but not very close either. How could the original owner willingly follow the Wang family through hardship when there was another way?

"You have a grudge against me, but it's simply because you want me to stay and share the good and bad times with you. But, by making such high demands, do you have some misunderstanding about me?"

As mentioned before, she is a vain and greedy woman who loves wealth and fame, and now it is not surprising to add that she is also afraid of death. Besides, who doesn't fear death?

Wang Chao's eyes widened. How could such shameless words come out of her mouth?!

In the prison, Censor Wang and Wang Yang, forced to listen to the entire ordeal, were indescribable. It was the first time they'd heard someone so confidently admit their despicable side! But why did they feel a certain skewed logic? Yes, that's just the kind of woman she was. To expect noble qualities from her was truly asking too much.

"You know your own character very well." Wang Lang raised his eyes slightly and said sarcastically.

Yao Chunnuan confessed, "That's right. Not only do I know that my character isn't noble, but I'm also very aware of how useless I am. Whether it's imprisonment, exile thousands of miles away, or the guillotine, I can't bear any of them."

Then she gave him a fake smile. "I know you look down on me, but even I'm someone like you. I'm still here to bring you some food out of consideration for our past relationship. If you had married someone of equal status, I might not even be around you anymore."

The higher-ups didn't mind a minor figure like her visiting the prison, because in their eyes, the influence she and the Yao family could exert was too small. But it was a different story for a family of equal status to the Wang family. Moreover, she dared to say that they would avoid meeting her to avoid any misunderstanding or involvement.

Wang Chao puffed his cheeks in dissatisfaction, not wanting to believe her nonsense.

"Isn't it? Besides me, has anyone else come to see you these days?" Yao Chunnuan looked surprised. She had just asked the guards, so of course she knew whether anyone had come to visit the Wang family during this period.

Her words made everyone in the Wang family feel gloomy. Although it was unpleasant to hear, it was also the truth.

The atmosphere was heavy. Yao Chunnuan waved her hand and said, "Alright, let's not talk about this anymore. It's all in the past. We humans still have to look forward. I've always believed that if we keep living, there will be thousands of possibilities ahead." Life is one, and the rest is zero. Only by preserving the one will the rest of the zero have meaning.

After the trial, Censor Wang committed suicide by hitting a pillar. He was a censor, wrongly accused, so didn't he want to prove his innocence by dying?

Censor Wang is simply too upright. As a censor, it's right for him to supervise all officials and record important matters, but royal affairs are bound to be dirty, especially those involving the struggle for the throne. You insist on recording everything clearly. Isn't this forcing some people to take action?

Therefore, good people do not live long, but evil deeds last for thousands of years.

She admired her and felt sorry for her but she couldn't do it, but she might as well mention it.

Thinking of this, she felt a little depressed for a moment and had no interest in staying any longer.

When she said this, she didn't notice that Wang Lang was also looking at her with a thoughtful look in his eyes.

"Okay, I don't have much time. You guys keep the food, this is probably the last time. As far as I know, the government will be interrogating you soon, so there will be no chance to send it to you in the future. If you don't want to eat it, you can feed it to the rats! I'll take the rest to the women's prison later."

Hearing this, Wang Lang's heart was moved. Could she have done this on purpose, along with her earlier statement that only by surviving could there be a thousand possibilities? Did this woman still have a conscience?

Yao Chunnuan didn't say anything more and left with half a basket of sesame cakes.

Wang Lang pursed his lips, his eyes darkened, and he thanked her, "Thank you very much."

He returned too late, and by the time he woke up, his entire family was in jail, leaving him no time to make any arrangements. Even the men couldn't eat the prison food, and the women were probably in even worse shape.

However, some plans needed to be changed, and his eyes accidentally glanced at her waist.

Yao Chunnuan walked away. When she heard his thanks, she waved her hand casually, but secretly made a scissors gesture in her heart.

After Yao Chunnuan left, Wang Chao hesitated and asked, "Second brother, do you feel like she has become a different person?"

In the six months since she married into the Wang family, she had always spoken softly to them, making them feel like she wasn't standing up straight. But she wasn't like this now, dressed like a country girl in a lotus-colored double-breasted blouse, a dark blue skirt, and embroidered cloth shoes with thousand-layer soles. She stood straight and confident, speaking to him without a hint of politeness.

"Perhaps this is what she really is like." In her previous life, her family announced their separation from him here and she escaped from prison. He never saw her again, even after he returned to power and hated her for sacrificing their child for his own glory and wealth. She asked to see him for this, but he refused to see her.

This time, Yao Chunnuan came to see them. To be honest, he was very surprised because this had never happened in his previous life.

Wang Lang took a pancake, tore off a piece, and threw it into a corner. After a while, he heard a squeaking sound. Half an hour later, nothing happened, so he shared the pancake with his father and brother.

Yao Chunnuan quickly arrived at the women's prison.

She had just put on a passionate show in front of the men of the Wang family in order to win over Wang Lang. Now, facing the wariness and suspicion of the women of the Wang family, she was much simpler and more ruthless.

She just rolled her eyes and said, "What? Are you afraid that I will poison you? I'm not that boring. If you are really worried, you can feed some to the mice and you will know if I have done anything." She gave me the pancake and ginger soup. It was up to her to eat it or not. If she didn't want to eat it, then forget it.

The women of the Wang family looked at each other. This made a lot of sense. Do you want to give it a try?

Yao Chunnuan ignored them and looked directly at the cell next to her. It was a common saying that enemies often meet again. As luck would have it, the Wang family's daughter was next to the Han family, Wei Qiuyu's husband's family.

Yao Chunnuan's arrival startled Wei Qiuyu. The book said that Yao Chunnuan would never return to the Wang family after they were exiled. And her impulsive and unbridled attitude was too much like her sworn enemy.

"Yao Chunnuan, is that you?" she asked tentatively.

When others heard what she said, they found it strange, but Yao Chunnuan and Wei Qiuyu understood.

Now, Wei Qiuyu is exposed, she hasn't yet.

Yao Chunnuan raised her eyebrows, "So what if it's me, so what if it's not me, are you going to treat me to tea in this prison?" Previously, Wei Qiuyu's tea was too strong, and many female colleagues privately called her a tea art master.

Wei Qiuyu gritted her teeth secretly, they were definitely mortal enemies.

It has been almost a year since she came here. Before she was sent to prison, Yao Chunnuan was not like this. Unexpectedly, after she was taken away by her family, when they met again, she looked so arrogant, just like that woman, so she asked that question tentatively just now.

At this time, the women of the Wang family were already experimenting with the little mice. The aroma of the pancakes made the prisoners even hungrier.

Wei Qiuyu took a look and said, "You came to visit me in prison. Didn't my mother and the others ask you to bring some food?"

Yao Chunnuan scoffed. It sounded like their families were on good terms. But didn't she know what was going on inside? Why was she playing dumb?

"No!"

Wei Qiuyu's eyes fell on the half basket of sesame cakes she brought, "Can we share it——"

"cannot!"

Wei Qiuyu was angry, "We have children here, you can't be so cruel."

"I can!" How cruel it can be.

"After all, we come from the same place, why be so heartless——"

Yao Chunnuan glared at him, "How dare you bring this up?"

Others thought Wei Qiuyu was talking about them all being from Jinniu Village, but Yao Chunnuan knew she was talking about them all being from the future. Thinking of the culprit who had brought her here, Yao Chunnuan couldn't hold back the primordial power within her!

"Xiaoying didn't mean it, and because of that last pull you gave me, I became like this, but I don't blame you." Wei Qiuyu felt she was unreasonable.

Xiaoying is her lackey.

Her words made Yao Chunnuan laugh. "You don't blame me, do you think you're being magnanimous? Let me tell you, Wei Qiuyu, people have different abilities. Believe it or not, if it weren't for the accident you caused, you wouldn't be able to catch up with me next time!"

Being looked down upon like this, Wei Qiuyu gritted her teeth.

Yao Chunnuan noticed that the women from both the Wang and Han families were looking at them. Plus, she had been in there for quite some time, so she was too lazy to talk to Wei Qiuyu anymore. "Forget it, I have nothing to say to you. Just stay in jail." Also, I wish you a pleasant journey.

Seeing her about to leave, Wei Qiuyu pressed her, "Yao Chunnuan, are you really done with Wang Lang?"

"What's it to you?"

"Since we are from the same place, I warn you that if you choose temporary comfort now, you will regret it one day." Wei Qiuyu said this meaningfully.

Yao Chunnuan rolled her eyes. Did she regret not going to jail or not being exiled?

After Yao Chunnuan left, Wei Qiuyu returned to the straw pile and sat down, a strange smile playing on her lips. It seemed Yao Chunnuan hadn't realized she'd been transported into a book, otherwise how could she have so easily severed ties with the Wang family? Fawning over the powerful and avoiding harm was that woman's nature. Knowing her husband was a golden thigh, how could she not cling to him tightly?

However, as she recalled their conversation, her face darkened again. Although she didn't want to admit it, she couldn't deny that Yao Chunnuan was truly powerful. If she stayed in the capital, she might be able to develop a powerful faction.

Wei Qiuyu didn't know what she was thinking about, her eyes flashed, it would be better... the Wang family hated her anyway!
