Chapter 14 Buying a Horse

“Sister, that was all your dowry from selling off your assets. You still have to raise Sui Sui, so we can’t spend your money.” Su Jin stopped in her tracks.

“We’re family, so let’s not talk like that. If we siblings go up the mountain to collect herbs a few more times, that’ll be enough for us to make a living.”

Su Jin thought that since he could ride a horse, he could take the medicinal herbs to the capital and sell them for a high price. He nodded, turned the mule cart around, and headed towards the horse market.

Upon entering the horse market, a foul odor immediately hits you.

Through the veil, Jiang Shuyue saw several horse traders chatting idly together, with more than ten horses standing, occasionally stamping their hooves restlessly.

Jiang Shuyue asked Qiuju to watch the mule cart while she and Su Jin went over.

Jiang Shuyue had read in a book that when buying a horse, you should look at its teeth and hooves to tell its age and health.

"Young man, would you like to buy a foal or an adult horse?" A middle-aged man squatted behind the horse dealers and stood up to ask when he saw Su Jin carefully examining the horse.

Jiang Shuyue lifted her veil and pointed to a thin, chestnut-colored pony: "This horse is weak and hasn't been trained yet. How much is it?"

"Young lady, you know horses?" The horse trader saw Jiang Shuyue examine the horse's teeth and then squat down to carefully examine its hooves.

Jiang Shuyue remained noncommittal.

The horse dealer was even more certain that the two men must be knowledgeable about horses.

He held out a hand: "This horse is not yet an adult. I can tell you are knowledgeable about horses. It's getting late, so I won't give you an inflated price. A good adult horse would sell for ninety taels, but I'll sell this horse for fifty taels of silver."

Su Jin was secretly delighted; he still had some money left over after buying the horse.

He looked at Jiang Shuyue, waiting for her to make a decision.
