Chapter 15 The Uninvited Guest

Jiang Shuyue frowned and remained silent.

After a moment, she said, "This horse has a thick tongue coating. It will need to be treated after we buy it. Fifty taels is too expensive."

The horse trader was stunned.

He didn't expect that the person he met today not only knew how to select horses, but could even spot when a horse was sick.

The horse trader gritted his teeth, looking pained, and said, "Since you know the horse is sick, you must know how to treat it. I'll give you a good saddle as a token of my gratitude to the horse."

The horse trader knew perfectly well that in a few days, the horse would likely die in his hands.

Jiang Shuyue knew that a good saddle was worth more than ten taels of silver.

She nodded slightly: "Deal. Don't forget the riding crop."

"You're too clever, young lady. Horsewhips are sold separately. Fine, fine, I'll give you one for free."

Jiang Shuyue personally selected a saddle, and seeing the horse dealer's pained expression, she knew she had made the right choice.

The horse trader helped put the saddle on, and Su Jin was about to put his hand inside his clothes.

Jiang Shuyue pressed his hand down: "Don't move, consider it a gift from your older sister."

With so many people around, Su Jin was afraid of being targeted by thieves, so he didn't refuse.

My sister is right, they are all one family. He is Sui Sui's eldest uncle, and there will be plenty of opportunities to repay my sister in the future.

Jiang Shuyue quickly paid the money and stuffed the reins into Su Jin's hand: "Lead it for a while, it's weak right now. Go back and let it rest before riding it again."

Seeing Su Jin leading the thin horse closer, Qiu Ju assumed that her mistress had bought such a horse to save money.

After leaving the horse market, Jiang Shuyue went to a grain and oil shop and bought rice and corn, then went to a general store and bought an abacus.

This time, it was Su Jin who paid the money.

After buying all the items, the three of them had a casual meal at a small restaurant.

“It’s the hottest time of day right now, so let’s not rush off once we’re out of town,” Jiang Shuyue suggested.

Su Jin and Qiu Ju both agreed.

After leaving the county town, we passed through a grove of trees.

The woods were lush and green, with grasses a foot tall.

The sound of cicadas was incessant.

Su Jin led the horse to a place where the grass was lush and green. The horse nibbled at the grass idly, and he gently stroked its back.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves and fell on the boy's face, casting shadows on his butterfly-like eyelashes.

“This horse is two years old. If it weren’t sick, the horse dealer wouldn’t have put it up for sale.” Jiang Shuyue handed the water bag containing the spiritual spring water to Su Jin.

Su Jin took the drink, drank some himself, and looked at Jiang Shuyue: "This horse has a poor appetite; perhaps it's thirsty."

"There are still water bags in the car, I'll go get them and feed it."

Watching Su Jin feed the horse water, Jiang Shuyue patted the horse's head and said, "You're lucky to have met us. I'll cure your illness in three days."

"Miss, how do you know what's wrong with a horse if you can't take its pulse?" Qiuju couldn't help but ask.

Jiang Shuyue smiled faintly: "Treating horses is simple. You can look at their tongue coating. If they lose their appetite and gradually become thin, it's either because of indigestion or because the horse isn't licking the salt blocks that were put in the stable. If you add some salt to their feed and let them get some exercise, they'll get better quickly."

Qiuju admired her mistress immensely. Ever since she was expelled from the Minister's mansion, her mistress seemed like a completely different person.

After returning home, Jiang Shuyue prepared a medicinal soup for the horse using spring water.

Su Jin found a bamboo tube and fed the horse the medicine.

Following Jiang Shuyue's instructions, Su Jin added a little coarse salt to the feed.

Three days later, the horse's appetite increased greatly, and its eyes became bright and alert.

“Ah Jin, you and Nan Nan should get closer to it. In two months, you can try to learn to ride a horse.”

Although Jiang Shuyue didn't know how to train horses, she knew that animals also had feelings, and they wouldn't be too resistant to people they were close to, making them easier to train.

At dawn, as the first rays of sunlight fall upon the earth, the village shrouded in a thin mist resembles a maiden unveiling her face, charming and alluring.

"Congratulations, Madam Su!"

Aunt Su stood in the courtyard, watching the famous matchmaker Wang sway her waist like a bucket as she walked towards her.

She hurriedly went to greet her: "Sister Wang, you're too kind. My family has fallen on hard times and we've returned to our hometown. What joy could there be?"

Aunt Su spoke modestly, her eyes full of anticipation as she waited for Matchmaker Wang to continue.

Her eldest son, Su Jin, had reached marriageable age, and finally a matchmaker was willing to act as a go-between for her family.

"Aunt Wang, please come in and sit down. My eldest brother has gone out to cut grass and will be back in a little while." Su Nan guessed that Matchmaker Wang had come to arrange a marriage for her eldest brother.

Matchmaker Wang picked up a handkerchief and patted it on her chin, then looked up at the old house on the other side of the bamboo grove.

"Ahem... Madam Su, is it really your niece who lives in that old house?"

Seeing that Wang the matchmaker wasn't responding, Aunt Su's eyes darted around.

Her heart skipped a beat.

"Yes! She's my niece."

Matchmaker Wang beamed with joy: "That girl is so beautiful, she won't have to worry about remarrying."

Aunt Su gave Su Nan a wink.

Su Nan turned and walked out of the courtyard.

“Sister, don’t go over there right now. Matchmaker Wang is inside. She’s asking Mother about you. I don’t think she has any good intentions.”

Jiang Shuyue was reading medical books with Su Hui in the main room when she looked up and saw Su Nan's anxious gaze.

A bad feeling welled up inside Jiang Shuyue, and she stood up abruptly.

"Sister, don't go. Mother knows how to handle this." Su Hui looked at Jiang Shuyue with concern.

“Ah Hui, you hardly ever leave the village, so Wang the matchmaker has never seen you. Don’t go out, I’ll go and meet her.”

Su Hui will be of marriageable age in two years. She is beautiful and outstanding, and she must not be allowed to be coveted by anyone.

Jiang Shuyue had her own plans. She regarded the Su family as her own and was determined to make good plans for them.
