Chapter 29 Falling Ill
When Shi Yang woke up the next day, it was already late morning, and his whole body ached.
Even getting out of bed and walking is awkward.
My throat is dry, sore, and a little hoarse.
I picked up the cup on the bedside table and gulped it all down in one go.
My gaze swept over the tablet on the bedside table with its black screen; it had run out of battery and shut down halfway through a video yesterday.
She searched the entire messy bed and finally found her phone under her underwear.
The battery in the upper right corner of her phone was almost depleted, so she plugged it in and opened WeChat.
He opened Lu Qingqing's chat interface, ready to confront her.
An hour ago, Lu Qingqing had just sent her a message.
The caption, "How's the battle going?", was accompanied by a rather lewd emoji.
Shi Yang angrily wrote a short essay of several hundred words, but still felt unsatisfied, so she deleted it. She then sent a voice message, gritting her teeth, saying, "Are you trying to kill me?"
Lu replied instantly, her tone extremely relaxed, showing no remorse for being the culprit: "So, tell me, did you enjoy it?"
Shi Yang: "..."
Just as she was about to speak, someone suddenly opened the bedroom door.
She thought it was Aunt Cui, but it turned out to be Ji Peiheng.
Why is he still here at this hour?
Is he not going to work again today?
Ji Peiheng took the initiative to clear up her doubts: "I will be at home for the next few days."
Upon hearing this, Shi Yang felt a chill run down his spine.
She wasn't sure if he and she were both home, or if she would still be able to get out of bed.
She hurriedly sat up in bed, tucking her messy hair behind her ear: "Then I'm going to work."
Ji Peiheng watched her frantically searching for clothes and said calmly, "I've already asked for leave for you, you don't need to go."
Shi Yang panicked: "No, I have to go."
She got out of bed too quickly, which strained her groin, making the soreness even more pronounced.
She walked those few steps with great awkwardness.
Ji Peiheng leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed, and said calmly, "Are you sure you want to go to the company looking like this?"
Shi Yang plopped back onto the bed as if deflated. It would be terrible if she went to the company like this and people saw her walking in such a strange way.
She looked up, her dark eyes glaring at him: "It's all your fault."
Ji Peiheng showed no remorse for doing wrong, and casually replied, "Yes, it's my fault."
Shi Yang crawled back under the covers and pulled them over her head: "Get out, I want to sleep."
Ji Peiheng sat down beside her and reached out to pull the blanket up: "You've slept for so long, how can you still fall asleep?"
A muffled voice came out: "Mind your own business."
She gripped the edge of the blanket tightly with her slender fingers, preventing him from pulling it off.
Seeing that her skin was red from being pulled by his delicate fingers, Ji Peiheng loosened his grip and reached under the blanket...
"ah……"
Shi Yang let out a gasp, his hands instantly losing strength.
Ji Peiheng pulled the blanket back and patted her fluffy head: "Don't sleep. Aunt Cui has prepared something delicious. Come downstairs and have something to eat."
It would have been better if she hadn't said anything, because now that she had, she clearly felt hungry.
Then something else popped into her head, and she glared at him: "How did you know my tablet's password?"
Ji Peiheng let out a breathy sound from his nose: "Your passwords since you were little have been either your birthday or pressing the keys in two vertical rows one after another. Do you need to guess?"
Shi Yang: "...Nonsense."
She deflated when she met Ji Peiheng's knowing look.
Okay, that's true.
Downstairs, Aunt Cui prepared her favorite dishes.
The aroma is enticing.
The most eye-catching item was the two cherry pies on a plate.
The sweet and sour taste of cherries and the flaky crust of the biscuits stimulated her sense of smell.
Shi Yang's eyes lit up: "Aunt Cui, you can make cherry pies?"
In her memory, the last time she ate cherry pie was in Haicheng, where she spent a year as an exchange student during her freshman year of college.
There's a dessert shop near the school whose signature dish is cherry pie, which is also her favorite.
After returning to the capital, she never ate it again, but she has been craving it ever since.
Aunt Cui poured her a glass of warm milk: "I didn't make this; my husband had someone deliver it to me this morning."
Are cherry pies being sold in Beijing now?
Shi Yang couldn't wait to take a bite, and the familiar taste swept over her tongue.
She wolfed down one.
It's so delicious, it tastes exactly the same as the one in Haicheng.
Is it because it's so delicious that the restaurant in Haicheng opened a chain store in Beijing?
Seeing how much she liked it, Aunt Cui said, "If you like it, I'll ask your husband where he bought it, and I'll buy it for you often."
"Uh-huh."
Aunt Cui's thinking was simple; she only assumed that the cherry pies that were delivered were bought in the capital, unaware that these two small pies were sent by Ji Peiheng to be airlifted from Haicheng early that morning.
Just so it can get into someone's mouth in time.
Shi Yang stared longingly at the last one, licking his lips.
Should we reserve one for Ji Peiheng?
I suddenly remembered seeing this store's packaging bags in the trash can yesterday.
She pouted, "How stingy."
They eat delicious food all by themselves and don't know how to share.
With that in mind, Shi Yang ate the last one as well.
After eating and drinking her fill, she felt exhausted and all she wanted to do was sleep.
She had just lain back in bed when someone called her.
Shi Yang picked it up lazily, saw the caller ID, and hung up without thinking.
The man called her several times, and she hung up each time.
Finally, Ji Jinyu sent her a text message: Yangyang, how are you? They said you're missing, and I'm very worried. Call me back if it's convenient.
Shi Yang pretended not to see it.
With a dull ache in her temples, Shi Yang felt extremely tired and closed her eyes to rest.
He fell asleep right away.
In her sleep, she felt alternating sensations of cold and heat, as if she were in a world of extremes.
She was so hot that she kicked off the blanket and pulled her pajamas up too high, but it didn't help.
When she was cold, she would curl up into a ball, covered herself tightly with the blanket, but she would still shiver from the cold.
With a dry and sore throat, even swallowing was a problem. In a daze, Shi Yang realized that he was sick.
She tried to open her eyes to drink some medicine, but her eyelids felt like they were being pressed down by a ton of bricks, and she couldn't open them at all.
I don't know how long I felt bad.
She felt someone pull her up and support her.
There's a bitter taste in my mouth.
A cold voice said in my ear, "Open your mouth and drink your medicine."
It's too bitter...
She knew that she needed to take the medicine to get better, so she forced herself to swallow it.
Lying down again, the discomfort persisted, and breathing remained difficult.
Tears welled up in Shi Yang's eyes as she looked distressed.
Aunt Cui looked worriedly at the person on the bed who looked pained, and paced anxiously: "Why hasn't Dr. Wen arrived yet?"
Ji Peiheng tucked the stray hairs damp with sweat from Shi Yang's forehead behind his ear: "Go and urge him again!"
Aunt Cui was about to make a phone call when the doorbell rang downstairs. She exclaimed with delight, "Coming!"
Wen Huai'an didn't even bother to change his shoes before carrying his medicine box and running up to the second floor, panting heavily.
Then, someone didn't even give him a chance to catch his breath: "Come and see, she has a high fever."
Seeing that the person in his arms had a furrowed brow, a flushed face, pale lips, and sweat on his forehead, Wen Huai'an dared not delay.
He observed Shi Yang's complexion and took her pulse.
Ji Peiheng asked, "How is it?"
Wen Huai'an sighed, "It's just a cold from being chilled, plus..." He glanced at the red marks on Shi Yang's exposed arm, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Overwork... um... all of this accumulated, and the cold just suddenly broke out. A little medicine will do the trick."
A fleeting awkwardness crossed Ji Peiheng's face, but fortunately, only one desk lamp was on in the bedroom, and the light was dim, so no one saw it.
"I'll prescribe some medicine, and she should take it on time every day." Wen Huai'an emphasized, "Let her take it easy for now. There are many things that need to be done after she recovers."
Wen Huai'an has high emotional intelligence; his words were veiled yet made everyone understand.
He could see clearly that Ji Peiheng visibly relaxed after hearing that she was alright.
Pei Heng's concern for this woman exceeded his expectations.
He and Ji Peiheng were childhood friends, brothers for over twenty years. Ji Peiheng was the one who understood him best and knew that he had always been... So at first, he thought that he married Shi Yang out of necessity and that at most he would just bring her home as a decoration.
Shi Yang wasn't feeling well, so Ji Peiheng wasn't in the mood to entertain him: "Alright, you can go now if there's nothing else. I'll call you if anything comes up."
Wen Huai'an: ? ? ?
"You woke me up in the middle of the night and I rushed over here. You wouldn't even give me a sip of water, and now you're kicking me out?"
Ji Peiheng said, "We're all brothers, don't be too fussy."
Wen Huai'an: "..."
