Chapter 69 Is this a natural progression?
The night was deep.
Lin Xili was wearing a beige cotton loungewear set, sitting cross-legged on one end of the sofa, with a forensic medicine book open on her lap.
Although the written test results have not yet been released, it's better to start preparing for the interview in advance.
But tonight, Lin Xili's mind wasn't entirely on the book.
Finally, she couldn't help but look up, her gaze falling on the other end of the sofa.
Huo Nanchen was sitting upright.
He was wearing a dark blue silk nightgown, the neckline slightly open, revealing his pale collarbone and a small patch of firm chest.
He held a medical journal written entirely in English in his hands, his long, slender fingers occasionally turning the pages, his expression focused.
The light shone on his profile, outlining his perfectly sculpted jawline.
As Lin Xili watched, a wave of emotion suddenly welled up in his heart.
This peaceful and idyllic scene was something she dared not even dream of just a few months ago.
But now, it has become an everyday occurrence that is readily available.
"Speaking of which..." she finally couldn't help but say, "I am truly grateful to Dr. Lan."
Huo Nanchen's fingers, which were turning the page, paused for a moment.
Lin Xili did not notice his unusual behavior. "Without him, I don't know how many detours I would have taken in preparing for the exam."
At this point, she closed the book. "Unfortunately, this Dr. Lan is just too mysterious."
“I’ve mentioned several times that I wanted to thank him in person, but he refused each time.”
She then sighed softly, "That makes sense. It's normal for elderly people of this age to be rather eccentric and withdrawn, and not to like socializing."
An old man?
"cough……"
Huo Nanchen clenched his fist and pressed it to his lips, his voice low and deep, "Since he doesn't want to show his face, we should respect that."
“That’s true.” Lin Xili nodded in agreement and reopened the book.
But after this little incident, she found it even harder to concentrate.
The man next to him.
The rhythm of his breathing, the sound of the pages rubbing against his fingertips as he turned the pages, the ambergris scent emanating from his body, and the masculine pheromones all silently stirred her senses.
The living room was small, the sofa was small, but the distance between them was as if they were separated by a galaxy.
Lin Xili held up the book, subtly shifting his body, little by little.
Until her shoulder gently pressed against his arm, and then she leaned her head against his broad, sturdy shoulder.
Huo Nanchen's fingers, which were turning the pages of the book, stopped in mid-air. He could clearly feel the softness on his shoulder and her faint, snowy fragrance.
That heat instantly ignited something long dormant within him.
But he quickly relaxed, neither dodging nor pushing away.
He subtly adjusted his posture, making his shoulders more comfortable for her to lean on, and leaned slightly towards her without making a sound.
He didn't speak, but just let her lean against him, his gaze returning to the journal in his hands.
However, he hadn't finished reading a single paragraph of that entire English paper in the past five minutes.
After a long while, as if to break the silence that was making him almost lose control, Huo Nanchen reached for the glass of water on the coffee table.
"Would you like some water?" His voice had a captivating magnetism.
Lin Xili was immersed in this rare intimacy and tranquility, and lazily replied, "Okay."
However, she neither sat up nor reached out to take the cup.
She was still leaning on his shoulder, but she tilted her head up slightly and opened her mouth.
Huo Nanchen lowered his eyes, his gaze falling on her upturned face.
Under the light, her skin was as white as jade, and her slender neck formed a beautiful and delicate arc.
And her slightly parted red lips presented a natural rosy hue.
Huo Nanchen's eyes instantly darkened.
He carefully brought the rim of the cup close to her lips, and slowly tilted the cup, the water wetting her lips.
Lin Xili did not get up, but instead took small sips of water from his hand.
Her throat bobbed slightly with each swallow, and occasionally her pink tongue would peek out, swirling away the water droplets from her lips.
In Huo Nanchen's eyes, this was a breathtaking scene.
"That's enough," Lin Xili said softly.
Huo Nanchen did as instructed, moving the cup away and placing it back on the coffee table.
Her lips looked exceptionally moist and full because she had just drunk water, and there was still a little water stain at the corner of her lips.
The damp spot shimmered alluringly under the light.
As if possessed, Huo Nanchen raised his hand.
With his warm fingertips, he gently and slowly wiped away the drop of water from the corner of her lips.
The moment their fingertips touched their lips, it felt as if an electric current shot through their bodies.
Lin Xili suddenly raised her eyes, her gaze meeting those dark eyes that were so close to hers.
These eyes were no longer calm and still as usual, but instead swirled with a thick and fiery undercurrent she had never seen before.
That was magma that had been suppressed to the extreme and was about to erupt.
Huo Nanchen looked at his reflection in her clear eyes, and at her slightly pouting, glistening lips.
He could clearly feel that his self-control, which he was so proud of, was crumbling at an alarming rate.
Lin Xili knew that he was always restrained and kept to his boundaries.
But at this moment, looking at the man's restrained expression, Lin Xili didn't want to wait any longer.
She reached out and gently tugged at Huo Nanchen's sleeve.
Her voice, tinged with passion, took on a soft, seductive quality: "Do you want it?"
Huo Nanchen was taken aback upon hearing this, and then looked at her sharply.
But now.
Looking into her eyes, which were filled with tears from emotion, and at her trusting and unguarded demeanor, I saw her eyes brimming with tears.
Huo Nanchen clearly felt that the channel he had longed for was finally filled with the living water called "love".
"Hmm..."
He stretched out his long arm and pulled her into his arms, his back slamming heavily against the sofa back with a thud.
Dr. Huo, who is usually restrained, polite, calm and composed, acted like a young boy at this moment, his movements forceful and urgent.
Lin Xili exclaimed in surprise, instinctively spreading her legs and straddling him.
This position made her feel ashamed, yet it felt incredibly fitting.
She naturally wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingertips disappearing into the short hair at the back of his head.
Huo Nanchen held her slender waist tightly with one hand, his large palm burning hot as if it would scorch her skin, while his other hand held the back of her head and pulled her forward.
His thin lips covered her red lips.
Without any probing, the kiss was tinged with burning desire from the very beginning—forceful and domineering, yet also tender and lingering.
This is a kiss that has been long overdue between husband and wife.
Huo Nanchen's kiss was awkward yet incredibly deep, as if he wanted to devour her whole and melt her into his very bones.
Lin Xili was so weak from his kisses that her brain felt oxygen-deprived and her vision blurred. She could only cling to his broad shoulders helplessly and respond awkwardly and passionately.
The only sound in the living room was their rapid breathing.
In the midst of her confusion and passion, taking a breath, she heard her own hoarse voice ring out on his lips.
"Is this... a natural progression...?"
Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes were watery, and her voice was soft as water, "We...go to the bedroom..."
Looking at the person in his arms, lost in a daze, feeling the soft, trembling body beneath his palm, he thought of the countless nights they had shared a bed but could only restrain their embrace.
No matter how pure and detached he may be, he is still a mortal with emotions and desires.
If you can resist the invitation from the person you love, then you're not a real man.
"Hmm," he responded in a hoarse voice, which was terrifyingly low.
The next second, the world spun around.
Huo Nanchen scooped her up in his arms, and Lin Xili gasped in surprise, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck and burying her burning cheeks in the crook of his neck.
Huo Nanchen held her in his arms and strode away.
However—ring ring ring!!
A sudden, abrupt cell phone ringtone shattered the tender atmosphere in the room.
That wasn't an ordinary ringtone; it was the highest priority alarm ringtone that Lin Xili had specially set for his work.
All movement froze instantly.
Huo Nanchen's steps abruptly stopped on the spot.
Lin Xili shuddered, jolting awake from her dazed state.
Her heart was still pounding wildly in her chest, and the afterglow of passion lingered in her body.
But her professional instincts instantly brought her to her senses.
"Put...put me down..." she struggled a little in a panic.
The bloodshot in Huo Nanchen's eyes had not yet faded, but he still obediently let go of her hand and gently put her down.
As soon as Lin Xili's feet touched the ground, her legs were still a little weak, and she staggered a bit before she could stand up.
She didn't bother to straighten her disheveled clothes; she practically rushed to the coffee table and grabbed the still-vibrating phone.
The screen displayed several large words: "Forensic Department Emergency Contact".
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, regulated her breathing, and then pressed the answer button.
"Hello, this is Lin Xili."
Although his breathing was still a little unsteady when he opened his mouth, his tone had regained its composure.
A serious voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Understood, I'll be right there."
Lin Xili's eyes instantly sharpened; the gentle and affectionate little woman disappeared, replaced by a clear-headed and rational professional forensic officer.
After hanging up the phone, her fingers tightened slightly as she held it.
She looked up at Huo Nanchen, who was standing not far away.
Under the light, his lips appeared exceptionally red from the intense kiss just now.
Their eyes met.
There was an awkwardness in the air, a feeling of passion being interrupted, and a faint sense of regret.
"I'm sorry!" Lin Xili pursed her still numb and swollen lips. "There's an emergency in the forensic department, I have to go back immediately."
Huo Nanchen stepped forward and gently straightened her slightly disheveled collar. "Work is important. Be careful."
She nodded, no longer daring to look into his eyes, which seemed to suck away one's soul.
"You should get some rest."
After saying that, she turned and rushed into the bedroom, changing into her outdoor clothes as quickly as possible.
A few minutes later.
The sound of shoes being changed came from the doorway, followed by the sound of the door opening and closing.
Huo Nanchen bent down and picked up the books and periodicals that had fallen to the ground due to the vigorous movement.
His gaze fell on the sofa, where the curve of her body seemed to still linger—the spot where they had just embraced and kissed.
After a long while, Huo Nanchen pinched the bridge of his nose, a smile appearing on his lips.
