Upon hearing this, the Shi family's dining table fell silent.
Shi Jing, however, was unconcerned about the current atmosphere. Although the original owner's emotions affected her, that was all.
She had no ambition towards the Shi family. And because of this, she could act as she pleased and without restraint when interacting with them.
Upon hearing her words, Grandma Shi glared at Shi Hai and said unhappily, "This is all your doing. You gave the child's custody to that woman out of nowhere."
She wasn't angry about Shi Hai's infidelity, but rather that Shi Hai shouldn't have given custody of Shi Jing to Yan Wanjun. She had raised her daughter for over a decade, and she felt it was a huge loss to just hand her over to someone else.
"It's not like our family can't afford to raise children. How can a divorce allow the child to go with the mother?" Grandma Shi was still angry when she thought about it.
"Mom," Shi Hai said helplessly.
Grandma Shi glared at her son again, then glanced at Qiu Tongyao sitting to the side, knowing who was responsible for this situation. Thinking of the child in Qiu Tongyao's belly, she ultimately remained silent.
Grandma Shi then looked at Shi Jing and spoke up for Shi Hai, saying, "Jing, your father loves you too. He's had a tough time; he's almost fifty years old and it wasn't easy for him to have another child."
These words almost made Shi Jing think that Shi Hai was all alone.
Shi Jing chuckled and didn't argue with the old woman: "I understand, Grandma. That's why Aunt Qiu wanted to leave my old room to my younger brother and let me stay in the guest room. I didn't say anything, did I?"
As she spoke, she looked at Qiu Tongyao and said with a smile, "Aunt Qiu is really amazing. My mother tried for so many years but couldn't get pregnant with my brother, but Aunt Qiu got pregnant so easily."
That's obviously nonsense. Who knows if Ms. Yan was using contraception? Saying that is just making things unpleasant for her.
Sure enough, the expressions on the faces of the people at the table immediately turned sour.
Shi Jing was the least affected. She picked up her chopsticks and directly took a piece of scrambled eggs with tomatoes: "Grandma, Dad, Aunt Qiu, let's eat. I have to go to school tomorrow."
"Eat up, eat up," Grandma Shi replied casually.
While speaking, his eyes were not on Shi Jing, but fixed on Qiu Tongyao's stomach, as if he were deep in thought.
Shi Jing ignored what the others were thinking and finished her meal on her own.
After the meal, the three people, whose spring waters had been stirred up, leisurely went upstairs.
The next morning, her driver, Uncle Chen, still took her. When they arrived at the school gate, Shi Jing told Uncle Chen that she was going to the library to study after school and didn't need him to pick her up, so she sent him home.
When Shi Jing arrived at the classroom, most of the students had already arrived and were waiting for the teachers to announce the year's learning outcomes.
As soon as she sat down, Qi Shuang, who was sitting in front of her, turned around and complained to her with a bitter face: "When I was in school, I was always thinking about going on vacation. Now that I finally have a vacation, I find that it's not as good as going to school."
Qi Yan, sitting next to Qi Shuang, was laughing uncontrollably, clearly having already complained to Qi Shuang.
"You're still laughing, and you're about to abandon us and go out to play. Ah, I really want to go out and play too."
Seeing this, Shi Jing comforted him, "If you're tired of studying, you can come and play with me."
Qi Yan laughed and said, "Do you think she doesn't want to? Aunt Yang is so strict, it's probably hard for her to run away."
“That’s right.” Qi Shuang sighed. “When will my mother finally realize that I really don’t have the talent to become an artist?”
Shi Jing thought about it and realized that it seemed her parents had never had high expectations for the original owner. Or perhaps they did at first, but later gave up because they found the original owner to be unruly and incorrigible.
In any case, nowadays no one is watching her studies anymore, and getting a word of praise when her exam results come out is practically the limit.
Since it was the last half-day of classes before the holiday, the homeroom teacher didn't delay and immediately handed out the report cards. All the subject teachers also came over to distribute the summer homework.
However, none of this concerned Shi Jing. Right now, she was beaming with joy at her own achievements.
Her grades are now third in her class and twelfth in the grade, a jump of 75 places. This means she can earn a total of 7.5 million from this mission.
These results are a pleasant surprise to anyone. Even the homeroom teacher, who doesn't like Shi Jing, has to admit that Shi Jing's grades have improved significantly.
Shi Jing was overjoyed to see the rankings. It was a pity she was still a minor, otherwise she would have been even happier if the money had been deposited directly into her account.
The system announcement sounded: "The host has now ranked 12th in the grade, improving by 75 places. The current task is complete. The reward of 7.5 million has been officially issued and stored in the host's personal account."
"New mission initiated..."
"Wait, wait..." Shi Jing quickly interrupted the system, "It's finally summer vacation, we don't need to send out any more study assignments, right?"
"Learning is like rowing against the current; if you don't move forward, you fall behind."
"There's no need to keep studying. It's a holiday, isn't it? You should relax and rest!" Shi Jing protested. "Look how pitiful Qi Shuang is. Do you want me to become like that?"
The system didn't insist: "Since that's the case, we can relax the requirements, but there still need to be tasks. Current task: Maintain the current learning progress and conduct system testing before the start of the semester. Reward for successful task: One million RMB. Penalty for failure: Increase the difficulty of tasks in the new semester until the expected progress is achieved."
This was the first time there had been a penalty for failing a mission, but considering there were no other mission requirements, Shi Jing complied. If it was simply a matter of maintaining her current learning pace, she felt no pressure.
The morning passed quickly, and after the grades and assignments were distributed, summer vacation officially began.
"Qi Shuang, Shi Jing, bye-bye!" Qi Yan happily said goodbye to the two of them. Her flight was in the afternoon, and she was going on a trip.
"Bye-bye." Qi Shuang said listlessly, looking at Shi Jing who was diligently tidying up his summer homework, and asked, "Shi Jing, what are you doing this afternoon?"
"I don't want to go home, I'll go to the library and read for a while."
"Huh? You finally get a holiday, and you still want to go to the library to read books?" Qi Shuang was very puzzled.
Shi Jing replied, "I'm staying with my dad right now and don't want to go back so soon."
Qi Shuang nodded knowingly, recalling what she had seen a couple of days ago.
"Okay, I'll head back now. I have a piano lesson tonight."
They exchanged a sympathetic glance and went their separate ways.
She bought some food near the school for lunch and then prepared to head to the library. She had sent Uncle Chen away that morning, so she naturally had to take the bus to the library.
Upon arriving at the library, Shi Jing first found the baggage storage area, took out the books, paper, and pens she needed, and stored her bag in the locker.
Just like last time, she went straight to the third floor after entering the library. Perhaps because it was still a weekday, there weren't many people in the library, and there were only a few people sitting in the reading room on the third floor.
She found a spot and quietly put her things down. Thinking she'd just grabbed her homework, she decided to do it first.
