Chapter 7 Afraid of This

Sang Jiang, holding a rat by its tail, looked helplessly at Kou'er, who was standing on the chair trembling.

She had lost count of how many mice she had caught in the past two months.

She knew from reading the novel that Sang Jiang, the tragic female supporting character, was not only unloved but also infatuated with men. After arriving, she discovered that she was more than just unloved.

The accommodations were practically exposed to the elements, and the food was even worse; Aya probably ate better than this young lady.

All the other maids had already run away, but Kou'er was still foolishly following her.

Seeing the rat that Sang Jiang was carrying, Kou'er felt like she was going crazy. She hugged herself and trembled as she looked at Sang Jiang.

In the past, whenever the Fourth Miss saw a mouse, she would hide with her on a high place and wait for the mouse to leave before daring to come down. Why is it that now...?

Could it be that, as the Third Miss and the others said, the Fourth Miss has gone mad?

Thinking of this, Kou'er suddenly burst into tears.

Sang Jiang was naturally unaware of her thoughts. She was currently considering what to do with the mouse: should she throw it into the First Madam's bird's nest or into Sang Rui's bed?

Hearing Kou'er cry, she snapped out of her reverie and raised an eyebrow: "Afraid of this?"

As she spoke, she raised the mouse in her hand towards Kou'er.

Kou'er felt her legs go weak as she watched the rat flailing its claws in Sang Jiang's hand.

"Pfft." Sang Jiang laughed as she looked at her, her phoenix eyes full of mockery.

She carried the mouse to Kou'er's side and held it up in front of her: "Kou'er, I heard that if you stew a mouse in soup and drink it, you won't be afraid anymore. Why don't we give it a try?"

Kou'er turned pale upon hearing this, feeling as if her insides were churning.

"Ugh!" Kou'er covered her mouth and began to gag. "Ugh! Miss, I...I...ugh!"

"Pfft, what are you afraid of? It's not like I'm giving it to you to drink." Seeing her like this, Sang Jiang stopped trying to scare her.

What if we really scare the little girl?

In the two months since she arrived, only Kou'er has remained loyal to her.

Her past has nothing to do with her, but anyone who dares to bully her after she arrives shouldn't blame her for not showing mercy.

Sang Jiang took out a handkerchief and carefully wrapped the mouse inside. The little girl was scared, so she couldn't frighten her.

Even with Sang Jiang's assurance, Kou'er still felt her legs go weak when she saw the handkerchief containing the rat in Sang Jiang's hand.

Sang Jiang raised her phoenix eyes slightly and stretched out her other hand to Kou'er: "Come on, I'll take you to do something big."

Kou'er, trembling, grabbed Sang Jiang's hand and jumped off the chair.

The chair wasn't particularly high, but Kou'er, with her small frame that hadn't had enough to eat for years, still stumbled when she jumped up.

Sang Jiang glanced at her but didn't say anything.

It wasn't until the two of them reached the corner outside the kitchen that Kou'er realized what Sang Jiang meant by "doing something big."

She tugged at Sang Jiang's sleeve and said timidly, "Miss, let's go..."

Sang Jiang glanced back at her, a hint of displeasure already flickering in her phoenix eyes: "If you're scared, then go back."

Kou'er's thin, sallow face showed reluctance. She rolled up the handkerchief in her hand and said, "I...I'd better stay with Miss."

If the First Madam finds out, she can take the blame for her daughter.

However, she did not say the second half of that sentence.

Hearing this, Sang Jiang's face lit up with a bright smile, her phoenix eyes appearing exceptionally captivating: "Good girl~"

She gave Kou'er a reassuring look, then crouched down and walked towards the kitchen.

Kou'er was a little dazed by Sang Jiang's laughter.

The young lady hadn't laughed like that in a long time—bold and confident.

Since the lady passed away, Miss has been enduring as much as possible.

After that, Prince Tianyi began to ignore her, and the young lady became even more depressed.

However, Sang Jiang didn't give her that much time to think. Kou'er became anxious as soon as she saw Sang Jiang sneaking to the kitchen door.

"Miss!" She rushed over and pulled Sang Jiang away.

She dared not imagine what would have happened if she had been any later.
