Shen Yanxi stood there speechless. Faced with his silence, He Lingchuan found it amusing: "Don't you understand Zhou Mingyan? You clearly know that he is deliberately scaring you, but you still cooperate with him in his act. You really love him."
He Lingchuan hadn't intended to say these things, but his words made it seem as if he were jealous.
Shen Yanxi frowned, her emotions shifting rapidly. Her angry gaze softened, just as He Lingchuan had suspected, she had misunderstood.
Shen Yanxi wiped away the tears that had welled up in her eyes, tilted her head and asked him, "He Lingchuan, you're not jealous, are you?"
"Do I really need to go that far?"
He Lingchuan retorted to Shen Yanxi without any mercy: "Can't you tell I'm being sarcastic? What happens to you has nothing to do with me."
He Lingchuan clearly saw Shen Yanxi's face darken, but he ignored it.
He turned and left, leaving Shen Yanxi in the conference room.
After the ambulance took Zhou Mingyan away, Shen Yanxi remained absent-minded. She got up and sat down several times, which annoyed He Lingchuan.
"If you're really worried, go and take a look."
"And you?"
Shen Yanxi asked a question unconsciously, and the two of them were stunned as soon as she uttered those two words.
He Lingchuan couldn't help but laugh: "The sun must have risen in the west, you actually asked me that."
Shen Yanxi frowned, slightly displeased: "Why don't you come with me?"
"Why should I go? What does this have to do with me?"
He Lingchuan looked puzzled: "Zhou Mingyan jumped off a building to gain your trust. You should go see him. You should stay by his bedside and show him some care and concern. That way, he will recover faster."
"He Lingchuan."
Shen Yanxi slammed her hand on the table and stood up, her eyes filled with anger: "Don't gloat here."
She was now distraught, her fingertips trembling uncontrollably: "No matter what, he only chose such an extreme idea to prove himself. You should come with me to see him."
He Lingchuan turned his head away, unmoved.
Shen Yanxi walked to He Lingchuan's side and patted his shoulder: "Stop dawdling."
"According to what you're saying, shouldn't I have stayed by Zhou Mingyan's bedside to take care of him?"
Even though she knew He Lingchuan was saying that on purpose, Shen Yanxi remained unmoved.
Faced with Shen Yanxi's silence, He Lingchuan shrugged: "Shen Yanxi, you can take care of your man however you want, just don't drag me into this."
He grabbed his coat and prepared to leave: "I came here to tell you that I will pick up Nan Chen and Bei Chen tonight and take them home. As for you, go wherever you want."
He had long since lost feelings for Shen Yanxi, and his departure was resolute.
On the contrary, Shen Yanxi kept staring at his departing figure, unable to look away for a long time.
...
Since He Lingchuan didn't come, Shen Yanxi had to go to the hospital alone. Looking at the person lying on the hospital bed, Shen Yanxi still couldn't bring herself to be ruthless.
She habitually felt sorry for Zhou Mingyan; any bump or bruise on this man was a form of harm to her.
She sat down next to Zhou Mingyan and gently stroked his face, saying, "Why are you so silly?"
"Xixi, do you believe me?"
Zhou Mingyan approached Shen Yanxi anxiously, grasped her hand, and said with a mixture of anticipation and fear, "Xixi, what will it take for you to believe me? I'll do anything as long as you don't doubt me."
Zhou Mingyan got up anxiously. When he approached Shen Yanxi, he aggravated the wound on his back, which made him break out in a cold sweat from the pain.
"Don't move, be careful of your wound."
Shen Yanxi immediately tensed up, placing one hand on He Lingchuan's chest and asking anxiously, "Are you in pain? Did you hurt yourself just now?"
"Then do you believe me?"
Zhou Mingyan kept bringing up the same question, and Shen Yanxi was very worried. To reassure Zhou Mingyan, she quickly replied, "I believe you. You even jumped off a building to prove your innocence. How could I not believe you?"
Hearing her say that, Zhou Mingyan was relieved.
He leaned against the headboard, his eyes closed weakly: "Xixi, with your words, even if I break my leg, I'd still feel it's worth it."
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
Shen Yanxi pouted and gently patted his shoulder, saying, "What am I supposed to do if you break a bone?"
Shen Yanxi's voice choked with emotion as she gripped Zhou Mingyan's hand tightly: "You absolutely cannot get hurt."
"Xixi, I promise you, I will live well."
Shen Yanxi's eyes softened, and she could no longer hold back, throwing herself into Zhou Mingyan's arms.
Zhou Mingyan wrapped his arms around Shen Yanxi's waist and tentatively asked, "Xixi, can I... take a look at Nan Chen?"
Shen Yanxi paused for a moment, then pulled away from Zhou Mingyan's embrace.
She paused for a few seconds, looking somewhat embarrassed: "Let me ask Nan Chen. He should have been with He Lingchuan recently."
Judging from Shen Yanxi's tone, she probably didn't intend for him to have contact with Nan Chen. Zhou Mingyan cautiously asked her, "Xixi, are you still worried about me?"
"Don't overthink it. I believe you didn't lose Nan Chen on purpose."
Shen Yanxi's eyes were sincere. To convince Zhou Mingyan, she didn't hesitate and immediately called Nan Chen's school.
She grasped Zhou Mingyan's hand: "Nan Chen and the others will be here soon."
About half an hour later, Nan Chen and Bei Chen were taken to the hospital by the housekeeper.
Nan Chen pushed open the door and immediately saw the person lying on the bed. He frowned and asked like a little adult, "Mom, what happened to Uncle Zhou?"
"Uncle Zhou is injured, Nan Chen. Can you stay with Uncle Zhou for a while? Uncle Zhou misses you."
Nan Chen looked up at Zhou Mingyan, but didn't make a move for a long time.
"Nan Chen, what's wrong?"
Shen Yanxi was a little confused and nudged Nan Chen's shoulder, but heard him say, "Dad should have arrived at school by now. He'll be worried if he can't find us."
Nan Chen tugged at Chen Yanxi's clothes: "Mom, did you tell Dad we're in the hospital?"
Upon hearing his words, Zhou Mingyan's face turned ashen and his lips turned pale.
Shen Yanxi glanced at Zhou Mingyan somewhat awkwardly: "Mom will call Dad now, why don't you stay with Uncle Zhou for a while?"
Nan Chen looked at Shen Yanxi with some doubt. He seemed reluctant, but he still sat obediently by Zhou Mingyan's bedside and chatted with him casually.
Shen Yanxi found a corner, and as soon as she dialed the number, she heard He Lingchuan's panting voice.
His voice sounded very anxious: "Did you take the child away?"
Hearing He Lingchuan's panting, Shen Yanxi felt inexplicably guilty.
"Yes, I..."
Why didn't you tell me?
He Lingchuan raised his voice, his tone filled with anger: "I thought the child was lost."
He was panting heavily. Once he caught his breath, he asked Shen Yanxi, "Where is Nan Chen now?"
"They are in the hospital."
