Chapter 185 Chaos

Bai Wei sat on the stone bench in the courtyard, feeling the night breeze carrying the scent of herbs as it gently wafted towards her. Her mind was filled with a myriad of thoughts.

Suddenly, she heard Zhao Yun's painful groans coming from inside the room.

"Ah—it hurts—it hurts—" "Mother—Mother—Third Sister—" Zhao Yun cried out in pain, feeling her stomach throbbing with pain, like a spasm.

"Big sister, are you about to give birth?" Zhao Rou saw Zhao Yun's pained appearance, which was very similar to her own miscarriage after taking abortifacients. She couldn't help but feel a little panicked. After all, although she had miscarried twice, she really knew nothing about childbirth.

She looked at Zhao Yun anxiously, not knowing what to do. All she could do was wipe the cold sweat from her forehead with a handkerchief again and again.

But her mother hadn't returned yet, what could she do? Zhao Rou was frantic, pacing back and forth. She felt she had to do something, but didn't know where to begin. Just then, she turned around and saw Yu Ming hurrying off to fetch the midwife who lived in the servants' quarters in the back courtyard. Her heart calmed down a little, hoping the midwife could arrive quickly and help Zhao Yun give birth smoothly.

As soon as Yu Ming stepped out of the house, she called out, "Midwife, midwife, my young lady is about to give birth!"

Her voice was exceptionally loud in the quiet night. Hearing the commotion, the others in the courtyard immediately lit candlesticks, and the courtyard was instantly brightly lit.

Bai Wei also heard the commotion. She quickly stood up from the stone bench, ready to go back inside to help. She knew that childbirth was a major event that required the help and care of many people.

Just then, she suddenly heard the sounds of fighting outside, the hurried fleeing of pedestrians, and pitiful pleas for mercy.

"Oh no, something's happened!" Bai Wei was startled; she realized the situation was dire. She stopped and nervously looked outside the door, wondering what had occurred.

"Madam, please come inside!" Li Afu rushed out, sword in hand, his face grave as he warily watched the doorway. "Master Zhao and I are outside. Please go and take care of Miss!"

Bai Wei nodded and turned to go back into the house.

Upon hearing the commotion, Zhao Shouzhen also came into the courtyard with a long spear.

He gazed at the firelight rising from the direction of the Chaoyang Garrison in the thick of night and murmured, "This chaos has come faster than I expected."
