Chapter 3
Putting aside the drawback of his unpredictable illness, Hisoka's personal qualities are actually quite good.
We met in a casino in a foreign country. At that time, I had just experienced some setbacks and was feeling depressed and uninterested in anything. I had given up on myself and started hanging out with some friends I used to look down on.
While I said I was just messing around, most of the time I was sitting alone in a corner, lost in thought, watching them indulge in their revelry. When it was all over, I would stay behind to pay the bill, and then walk alone on the streets at dawn, heading back to the hotel.
—Since you're already out having fun, why don't you join us, Ray?
They asked me questions repeatedly.
Disappointment can sometimes damage the brain, just like alcohol can. During that time, my reactions were quite slow.
After a long pause to process what he was asking, I finally looked up in confusion and asked sincerely:
"Do I look so hungry that I'd eat anything..."
Even if you indulge yourself, you should still be selective about who you choose to date.
I've already reluctantly paid their bill, and they still want to take advantage of me?
There's no such thing as an easy bargain in this world.
I have a genuine doubt.
The air fell silent for a moment because of my blunt question.
A moment later, they burst into laughter:
"As expected of Miss Adrian."
"Even at a time like this, they wouldn't deign to be considered one of us."
"As expected of something Lei would say."
Before I could say anything, a friend suddenly pushed away the handsome guy in his arms, put down his wine glass, and came closer, revealing all his cards in his hand in the process.
But she didn't seem to care. She reached out her hand, gesturing for me to look towards the door, and lowered her voice:
"Since you don't like our taste... how about that handsome guy over there?"
I looked in the direction she was pointing. The red-haired man had broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long legs. His slightly narrowed golden eyes easily captivated the women around him as he talked and laughed.
She's not my type, but I have to admit she's exceptional.
"If you like, we'll pay the bill ourselves tonight. You can just focus on having fun with that guy, how about it?" my friend proposed a bet. "But... surely the elegant Miss Lai can't actually afford to play this game?"
I smiled.
“No,” I said. “If my playmates are at this level, I’d be happy to play with them.”
Then I did something I've regretted ever since—I was actually fooled by this guy's appearance, walked up to him, and greeted him softly.
"Hello, sir," I asked directly, "Do you have any plans for the evening? If not, would you like to spend the evening with me?"
He sat at the gambling table, turned his face to the side, tilted his head back slightly, and curled his lips as he looked me over for a while, seemingly lost in thought.
It wasn't until the people around me started whispering impatiently, recognizing me and making comments that included the word "Adrian," that the time dragged on until I vaguely felt that my invitation was going to fail, before he slowly reached out and closed the cards in his hand.
“Sure,” he said, still smiling, but without a hint of friendliness. His smile only instilled a chilling, unsettling fear, like a venomous snake crawling up your leg. “It’s an honor to receive an invitation from such a beautiful lady.”
For a moment I regretted it, but the man didn't give me a chance. He decisively put down his cards, left the huge amount of chips behind him and ignored them, then put his arm around my shoulder and walked out.
Me: "...You're in too much of a hurry."
His tone was peculiar, casual yet seemingly with ulterior motives: "Heh, could it be that you like things to be slow and hesitant?"
Instead of continuing his line of dialogue, I changed the subject: "How should I address you?"
“Siso,” he said.
Me: "My name is Lai."
Hisoka still looked lazy:
"Oh, it's her real name. Little Lai is so cute~"
I replied nonchalantly, "It doesn't matter. You probably heard what they were saying about me."
Hisoka chuckled and readily admitted, "I heard that, little Rae is the second young lady of the Adrian family~"
His tone suddenly became a little strange, as if he were talking to himself. He lowered his voice and mumbled something like "I actually ran into him."
……wack.
Although he's handsome, he's really a weirdo.
That's how I mentally assessed him.
After being led by him for a while, I belatedly realized the danger of my actions.
My mother had quite a few enemies.
If I rashly follow a stranger, won't I be killed or kidnapped in revenge?
The thought flashed through my mind, but I quickly dismissed it without a second thought.
……It doesn't matter.
I might get hurt, or even die, but I don't care what happens.
Anyway, I can no longer get what I wanted most.
Rather, if that person saw me like this, they might suddenly appear from the shadows.
Thinking this, I couldn't help but look around with expectant eyes.
They found nothing.
I lowered my eyes in disappointment.
Hisoka asked, "What is little Rae looking for?"
I don't."
He didn't expose my easily debunked lie, but gave an ambiguous "hmm," then suddenly stopped and said:
"We've arrived!"
Before I could respond, he pushed me into the lobby, decisively booked the top-floor luxury presidential suite with the front desk, and urged me to take out my ID card with his eyes.
I had barely taken my card out of my handbag when he promptly paid the bill, casually leaning over the counter with one hand to look at me.
"Hmm~ Little Laiyi is indeed extraordinary."
I'm used to this person's occasional nonsensical ramblings, and I'm too lazy to think about what he means. I took my ID card back from the receptionist and asked coldly:
"Alright, aren't you leaving?"
He: "Okay~"
In summary, Hisoka and I didn't have much interaction. Our only memory is that brief night.
That night wasn't very pleasant.
His physique was indeed as I had described to my friend—excellent, truly top-notch.
While having a good figure is an advantage, having too good a figure can be unbearable for others.
At one point, I thought he might really be an enemy of the Adrian family, and that his purpose in luring me was to murder me, Miss Adrian.
Looking back now, it's a miracle I survived this guy.
When this guy finally stopped for a moment, I finally lost my temper and told him to get lost.
I never want to see you again!
Hisoka frowned, his beautiful yet strangely alluring face contorted, and ran a hand through his hair with a pitiful expression.
"They clearly did their best to serve Miss Lai!"
I don't want to say more: "Get lost...cough cough!"
Hisoka: "Ah, so your throat is uncomfortable too~"
...
The more I think about it, the angrier I get.
When I saw him today, I tried my best to pretend I had never seen him before and to avoid getting involved with him.
Why was someone sneaking into my room in the middle of the night?
Didn't he understand what I meant when I said things like "I don't want to see you again" and "There's absolutely no possibility between us"?
Really...
I couldn't help but let out a long sigh.
“Not today.” Then I said firmly, “At least today, please behave yourself, Mr. Hisoka.”
"Hmm~ Is it okay after today?" He continued to bury his face in my hair, looking restless.
I sat upright, unmoved, and saw my calm face reflected in the mirror.
Many people have praised this face, even Illumi thoughtfully remarked:
"Lay looks like a member of our family..."
The Zoldyck children are all very beautiful.
Although he rarely showed it, Illumi was actually very satisfied with his appearance, and by extension, he liked me too.
After all, if he looks like Zoldyck, we'd look like siblings.
Thinking about it carefully, the peak period when Illumi took the initiative to contact me was around the time when he suddenly realized that I looked like Zoldyck.
Ah, I can't think about it anymore.
Thinking about it carefully, it's really pathetic. Not only did I unintentionally attract a perverted lover, but my newly engaged fiancé also seems to be mentally unstable.
Who would... just because someone of the opposite sex looks like their sister?
I stopped thinking.
Because I suddenly realized that although Illumi wasn't a normal person, I wasn't qualified to say that he was either.
After all, the circumstances under which I met that person were more subtle.
