Chapter 6 No Betrothal Gifts

As soon as someone outside called, the two little ones immediately stopped arguing.

They all hid behind Cen Xi, not daring to speak.

Cen Xi glanced disdainfully at the woman who wouldn't let her do this or enter Liu Jiuyi's room. What happened to her promise not to acknowledge her as her mother?

Why do you cling to her leg and refuse to let go whenever something happens?

Is Lady Liu here?

The two men outside peered through the crack in the door, their greed and excitement clearly visible on their faces.

"Jiuyi, go open the door!"

Cen Xi looked at the little boy clinging to her leg on the right with a wicked grin and said.

"I'm not going!"

"Didn't you say I'm not your mother? You won't let me in here, you won't let me touch that. You'd better deal with those two people outside today."

Cen Xi felt it was necessary to teach this little brat a lesson, otherwise he would always disagree with whatever she did, which was very annoying!

“I…you…I’m a child, they’re looking for you.”

Xiao Jiuyi withdrew her hand from Cen Xi's leg instantly, looking bewildered.

“They’re looking for your mother. You’re her good child, so naturally you should help deal with it. I’m not your mother, and I’m not called Lady Liu. What do you suggest we do?”

Cen Xi picked up the little fish beside her, then raised an eyebrow and looked at Liu Jiuyi, the little brat, and asked.

"Yes! Mother is right. Brother is a real man. He should rush forward when there's trouble. Keep it up!"

The little fish hugged Cen Xi with its chubby little hands and said in a childish voice.

"Is Madam Liu here? We came in ourselves."

The two men outside, seeing that there was no movement inside for a long time, pushed the door open and came in themselves.

"Jiuyi, come on! Xiaoyu and I are girls, so we can't help you much. Good luck, and you must strive to preserve your mother's chastity. We're going inside now."

Cen Xi deliberately walked into the house while holding the little fish!

"Wow!

"Waaah... Mommy, I'm so scared! Don't go!"

Seeing that he was the only one in the courtyard confronting the person who had come in, Xiao Jiuyi panicked instantly.

Cen Xi looked at the little kid who ran over to hug her leg and smiled. "Little brat!" she thought. "I can handle so many people in the company perfectly well, why would I be afraid of a little kid like you causing trouble?"

"Miss Liu, we've come to you for good news! Don't hide, listen to us first. The philanthropist Wang in town has taken a liking to you. His family is incredibly wealthy. If you marry him, Aunt Li next door will definitely dare to cause trouble again. You'll be living the high life, with everything you could ever want!"

A man entered, beaming with a smile.

Cen Xi smiled and looked at him without saying a word, thinking to herself, "My cheap husband just left, and you've already got your eyes on me, huh? How much did you sell me for by running errands like this?"

"Lady Liu, Lady Liu, are you listening to me?"

Seeing that Cen Xi was staring at him without saying a word, the man had no choice but to ask again.

"Which Wang family in town is the most philanthropic? How much money does he have? Come in and talk to me."

Cen Xi took Jiu Yi's hand and carried Xiao Yu into the house.

“就是镇上的第一富商王大锤啊,柳娘子,你连这个都不知道啊?他昨天听说你揍了隔壁的李肥婆,兴奋得很,说就喜欢你这样的小辣椒,很合他的胃口。他说你只要嫁给他,他就送九意去郡县读书,以后考个功名啥的不在话下。”

"As for how much money his family has, I don't know, but it's definitely enough for you to live on for several lifetimes."

Cen Xi watched as the man before her spoke eloquently, perfectly embodying the role of a matchmaker.

Cen Xi was a little confused. Were there men who acted as matchmakers in ancient times?

In the past, when I watched TV or read novels, it seemed like all the matchmakers were women.

Did they pick up the wrong script?

Are you two matchmakers?

Asking questions is Cen Xi's consistent way of doing things, so she didn't think there was anything wrong with her question.

But the expressions on those two men's faces...

Well!

That was quite embarrassing.

"Is there something wrong with what you said? Why do you two look at each other like that?"

Cen Xi asked questions when she didn't understand.

"No! We're not matchmakers. We just see that you're having a hard time, Miss Liu, and we want to help you out. After all, isn't marriage the only way out for a woman?"

After the awkward moment, it was the silver-tongued man who spoke first with a forced smile.

"Oh! Is that so? When are you getting married? We're neighbors, brother. As you know, our food supply is almost gone. If no one helps us, the three of us will starve to death."

Cen Xi asked, feigning an eagerness to marry into the family.

"Lady Liu, are you agreeing?"

The man was overjoyed to hear her say that.

"Yes, they're such a good family, of course we should agree."

Cen Xi looked excited, which didn't seem fake.

"How much dowry do you want? Mr. Wang is waiting for our reply."

The man who had spoken the most asked again with a forced smile. He hadn't expected Madam Liu to be so easy to talk to. It seemed she truly had nowhere else to turn.

“I don’t need a dowry. Look at my family, there’s hardly anyone here, so it’s useless to us. Go back and tell Mr. Wang that all I need to do is bring the two children to his house. I’ll be eternally grateful if Mr. Wang thinks highly of me.”

Cen Xi looked at the kind person in front of her with great sincerity and said.

"Well?"

"good!"

"When will we bring you to our residence?"

The man swallowed hard, somewhat overwhelmed by Lady Liu's humility. Weren't the wives of scholars supposed to be particularly principled? Weren't they said to prefer starving to death or committing suicide rather than remarrying?

Before coming, he discussed it with the guy next to him for a long time, preparing to use force if the soft approach didn't work.

Unexpectedly, they didn't even want the betrothal gifts.

"There's no time like the present, why don't we do it today?"

Cen Xi really didn't want to sleep in this dilapidated house again tonight. It was alright in the summer, the natural breeze would definitely keep it cool, but in the winter, it was extremely biting. And that quilt, as hard as a rock, was something she really couldn't stand.

She decided to sleep in Wang the Philanthropist's bed tonight. Surely his blankets wouldn't be as hard as stone, and his walls wouldn't be drafty, given how much money he had.

"Huh? Today? Is that what Lady Liu means?"

Cen Xi's words left the two middle-aged men speechless, their expressions indescribable.

"Yes, today. If today isn't possible, then tomorrow. We need to be quick. As you know, brother, we've already run out of food."

In order to get to Wang Dashanren's house as soon as possible, Cen Xi decided to add some more drastic measures; she didn't want to sleep in this dilapidated house for another night.

"Alright, alright! Lady Liu, we'll go ask Mr. Wang right away. If it's possible today, we'll find someone to send you there immediately, okay?"

The matter was settled, and the two men in front of them were beaming with joy. It couldn't have been easier said than done.

It seems the rumors were wrong; scholars don't really have any pride! Money is more important.
