Ma's mother came out alone; where did Ma Mei go?
Suspicious glances lingered on Ma's mother. Ma's father and Ma Facai suspected that Ma's mother was soft-hearted and wanted to help Ma Mei.
"Mother, where is Ma Mei? You won't be protecting her, will you?"
"How could that be? I wish I could tear Ma Mei to pieces."
Ma Facai's words were like a sword piercing Ma's mother's heart. To prove her innocence, Ma's mother flung open the door to the woodshed.
The cramped space of the woodshed was laid bare before Ma's father and Ma Facai, making it impossible for anyone to hide inside.
"Smack!"
With Ma Mei gone, their life savings were gone. Unable to remain calm, Ma's father slapped Ma's mother across the face.
The injuries she sustained from being beaten by her father that morning hadn't healed yet, and now her father had inflicted new wounds. She also vaguely felt that she was losing hearing in her left ear.
Although she couldn't hear it, every word her father said reached her ears.
"You slut, you're a slut, and you gave birth to a slut. I'm asking you, where did Ma Mei go?"

The increasingly fierce look in Ma's father's eyes terrified Ma's mother, who involuntarily backed away, trying to escape his brutal beating.
"You bitch, you dare to hide from me? You and Ma Mei are truly mother and daughter, both bitches. You eat my Ma family's food, use my Ma family's things, live in my Ma family's house, and still want to rebel against me? You bitch, I won't let you get away with this."
“If Ma Mei dares to take things from the house, you are Ma Mei’s mother. A mother has to pay for her daughter’s debts. I’ll beat you up first as interest.”
As Ma's mother watched, Ma's father continued to kick her.
It seemed to fall very slowly, yet very quickly. She couldn't remember the last time she had been beaten like this by her father.
