After moving here, Ma Mei opened her door for the first time and strolled towards the Ma family home, wondering what expression she should have later.
She seemed neither sad nor upset.
Even the longest road eventually comes to an end. Ma Mei stopped at the doorway. This was the place where she grew up, and also the place she had always wanted to escape from.

Remembering the note her mother had given her earlier, Ma Mei's head buzzed. She instinctively pushed open the door and looked across the courtyard into the main room, where she was met with her mother's face.
Tears streamed down her face, and through her blurry vision, Ma Mei thought she saw her mother smiling at her.
But that doesn't make sense. The mother horse's eyes were closed the whole time, so why would she smile at her?
