"You silly girl, I'm your aunt, you can't even say a few words to me? Crying, what are you crying for? Why don't you just cry yourself to death...?"
Seeing Ma Mei crying, the neighbor cursed a couple of times and came over to try and stop her. Just as he was about to push her, he saw what was happening inside the main room.
"Oh no, someone's dead."
The neighbor was quite frightened. She never imagined that the three members of the Ma family, who were alive and well just a few days ago, would turn out like this today.
Ma Facai's father lay motionless on the ground, his face deathly pale. Ma's mother sat on a stool, her eyes closed, her face mirroring that of Ma Facai's father.
It was clear that something had happened to the three of them.
The aunt who had spoken to them earlier also ran over to see what was happening, and other people in the neighborhood who had heard the neighbor's shouts also came out.
Standing at the door, you can tell what's inside.
Looking inside, the crowd sighed a few times, then looked at Ma Mei with undisguised sympathy in their eyes.
Respect for the deceased is paramount. Any hatred or resentment harbored while the deceased was alive vanishes in this moment.
They spontaneously went into the house to help Ma Mei with the funeral arrangements for the three of them.
No one gossiped or suspected anything. A mouse, which had been stealing food, lay beside the food.
It's obvious what happened. Why say hurtful things? A perfectly good family, suddenly only one child is left.
She's still a child, and Ma Mei might not understand what they're saying.
The people left quickly, and the helpers cleaned up just as quickly. In just a few days, the house was spotless, as if nothing had happened.
After seeing the last person off, Ma Mei stood in the courtyard for a very long time, so long that she almost thought she wouldn't move anymore.
The note returned to Ma Mei's hands. Opening it again, she felt a completely different emotion than before.
The characters above were still crooked and illegible, but this time Ma Mei noticed that every stroke was carefully made, every stroke carried a sense of determination.
After recalling what her neighbor had said, Ma Mei immediately understood.
To write this note, Ma Mei asked others one word at a time, afraid that they would discover what she was writing, so she deliberately asked each person about one word.
"How can you be so annoying!"
Ma Mei murmured, her dried tears seemingly finding a new source, once again covering her entire face.
How can you be so annoying!
If she didn't write a note, she could assume that Ma's mother didn't love her, didn't care about her, and that her life or death was none of Ma's mother's concern, just as Ma's mother's life or death was none of her concern.
But after writing it, I felt so annoyed. She had clearly accepted being alone.
"Slap slap slap"
"Meizi, it's your uncle. My poor niece, I've heard the news. Your mother and father are gone. My poor niece, why is your life so miserable..."
The door was slammed shut, but Ma Mei didn't move.
She knew who was outside the door; it was Ma's mother's older brother, who was also her maternal uncle. Ironically, she had never met her uncle before.
The words on the note floated into her mind, and Ma Mei seemed to remember that when her mother first came to the Ma family, it was because her mother's parents wanted to raise money to find a wife for someone from outside the family.
It was a mistake, a real mistake.
A wrong beginning, a wrong end. Ma's mother said her life was a mistake, and she was absolutely right.
The noise outside continued, but Ma Mei ignored it.
“My dear niece, I really am your uncle. Your mother and I share the same father and mother. If it weren’t for the Ma family’s bullying, I would never have let your mother marry your father. My dear niece, your uncle has been living in pain all these years. I want to come and find your mother, but I’m afraid your father will find out and beat your mother again.”
“My dear niece, your uncle has really had a hard time these past few years. But now that your father is gone, your uncle is no longer afraid. Don’t worry, my dear niece, even though your mother is gone, you still have your uncle. Open the door and come home with your uncle. From now on, as long as your uncle has food to eat, you will have plenty to drink.”
I shouted until my voice was hoarse, but no one inside opened the door.
After waiting for a long time, no one came out. Instead, someone else came out and glared at him menacingly. Always one to bully the weak and fear the strong, Uncle Ma Mei dared not speak out and slunk away.
The neighbor sighed. "Poor child. Her parents and older brother are all gone. From now on, Ma Mei will be all alone. She'll have to keep an eye on her from now on."
She let bygones be bygones for the things her father had done to offend her in the past; he was gone, leaving behind only a child.
Ma Mei had no idea what happened next. After leaving the door, she went to the place where she had slept since she was a child.
Ma's mother wrote on the note that the important things were buried in the woodshed.
Slowly digging, Ma Mei found the things her mother had mentioned. Perhaps because her heart was too complicated, Ma Mei stared at the things for a long time.
The house certificate is there, the money is there, and the dark ball is there too. The ball has been worn down by Ma's father, leaving deep cracks through which a faint green tinge can be seen.
Based on what her mother said, Ma Mei knew in her heart that it contained jade.
With the money she had at home and the money she had now, she really wasn't short of money at all, but her heart still felt empty.
Ma Mei knew what was missing, but couldn't find anything to make up for it.
The Ma family's affair is no small matter; the fact that three people were poisoned to death is a serious issue, and Li Yiyi has heard about it as well.
Of course, she only heard about it when she came to pick up her things.
Li Yiyi had some guesses about who came after Li Hun, but she needed solid evidence to get this person to admit it.
To preserve evidence, Li Yiyi spent a lot of money buying various items, and to ensure she wouldn't arouse suspicion, she behaved exceptionally well during this period.
