Chapter Fifty: Cracks

There is a magnificent hall inside Perkins.

There are a total of twenty-five pillars in the hall to uphold the nation's rule.

Without exception, they were all made of metal, either gold or silver...

When Li Aili arrived at the main hall with the emperor and empress, a bronze pillar shattered into several pieces lay on the ground.

Li Aili stood behind the Emperor and Empress, and she saw that the Emperor and Empress's figures were trembling slightly.

“Go…” The Emperor and Empress’s voices were somewhat hoarse.

"Have you gone to inform Caesar's family?"

Catherine said, "Someone has already been sent to inform them of the death."

The Emperor and Empress took a deep breath. "Bring Princess Caesar and her children to Perkinsmein Palace..."

The emperor and empress walked to the collapsed and broken pillar of the nation and slowly, slowly squatted down.

Plop, a crystal teardrop fell onto the shattered bronze pillar.

“Albert,” her voice choked, “write to your sister Anyana and tell her to come back from the Holy Light Academy to attend her uncle’s funeral.”

Albert's voice was barely audible. "Yes, Mother."

He patted Arthur gently on the shoulder, then turned and left.

He is the eldest son, the crowned prince who is now the regent, and with the prince killed in battle, countless matters await his attention.

Li Aili turned her gaze away from the departing prince.

Arthur walked to his mother's side, knelt on one knee, and gently stroked the Empress's back.

An emotional breakdown can happen in an instant.

The emperor and empress embraced their youngest son, their cries echoing through the hall, "I don't want you to go to the battlefield, I don't want you to..."

Arthur simply pursed his lips, and a tear slid down his cheek.

He clumsily patted his mother's back.

The mother's tears soaked the blood-red sash that symbolized her noble status.

"I am here, Mother. I will always be by your side, safe and well."

Li Aili stared at Arthur, lost in thought.

Albert shouldered everything, so he lost the right to grieve for the passing of his loved ones, the right to be with his mother, and even the right to shed tears.

Eighteen-year-old Arthur possessed all of this simply because someone stood in his way.

Li Aili's eyes were a little red.

If she had met the current Arthur in the first place, perhaps there wouldn't have been so many misunderstandings between them.

But there are no "what ifs".

When they first met, he was already invincible.

...

When Prince Caesar's wife and only son arrived at Perkins, it was drizzling in the capital city of the Holy Dragon.

The castle was shrouded in a persistent dark cloud.

Everyone changed into heavy black formal wear.

Li Aili stood in front of her bedroom window, watching a line of black carriages parked downstairs.

Distinguished guests, dressed in black mourning attire, attended the prince's funeral.

Knock, knock, knock, the sound of knocking on the door rang out.

"Please come in, Conrad."

Li Aili looked down out the window, but her mind was on the blank Holy Dragon Era in the epic.

Conrad walked in. "Ms. Li Aili, the equipment you ordered is ready."

"As you instructed, I have placed it in the newly built wooden cabin in the forest behind the castle."

Li Aili thanked him, "Okay, thank you Conrad."

No sooner had he finished speaking than a series of chaotic hoofbeats came from outside the window.

Li Aili looked downstairs.

Two teams of knights escorted a pure white carriage, which stopped on the green lawn in the front yard below the window.

The Church of Light has a lifelong, unwavering love for the color white.

The carriage door opened, and a young girl dressed in a pure white nun's robe stepped down from the carriage.

She was tall, with long, jet-black hair, a beautiful face, and a graceful figure; every step she took exuded the good manners of a nobleman.

"This is Princess Anyana, the sister of His Highness Albert and His Highness Arthur."

Conrad introduced Li Aili to him.

Li Aili remembers what Aniana looks like.

Upon closer inspection, it became clear that this was the mysterious lady who had appeared at the investiture ceremony.

However, I never expected that she would be Arthur's sister.

Anana hurried into the castle.

"His Highness Caesar's remains will be escorted back to the country this evening."

The funeral will be held tomorrow.

Conrad mechanically recounted the process.

Li Aili sensed something was wrong and carefully observed Conrad.

The old housekeeper's eyes were red.

It was then that Li Aili realized that the sacrificed Prince Caesar might have been raised by this old butler.

Li Ai Li opened her mouth, but even as Conrad left, she couldn't think of any words that could make the white-haired butler feel any better.

That evening, Catherine came to Li Aili's room and gently knocked on the door.

Li Aili opened the door and saw Arthur dressed in all black standing at the entrance.

"Could you come with me to the Dragon Tower to pick up Uncle Caesar?" Arthur asked.

He lowered his eyes slightly, his eyes filled with deep sorrow.

Li Aili softly agreed, "Okay, I'll go get a hat."

At noon, Catherine brought over the black dress and hat.

Li Aili then changed into a black dress to signify her condolences.

Back inside, she took the black hat with the veil over it off the coat rack.

Put on your hat in front of the mirror and adjust your black mesh veil.

After leaving the room, she said to Arthur, "Arthur, let's go over there."

Arthur extended his hand in a gentlemanly manner.

Li Aili placed her hand on top of it, just like when they were together a thousand years later.

Arthur slowly and tightly gripped her hand.

The two walked hand in hand to the Dragon Tower without exchanging a word.
