At 5:40 this morning, a group of middle school students ran into the classroom. The teacher who was squatting at the door of the classroom stood there with a stern face, blocking the group of so-called late students.
"Look at what time it is. Why are you here only now? Are you the only one who can't get out of bed? How can others get up?" The teacher pointed at the students in the classroom who had already started reciting.
The students who were blocked at the door stood in a row, leaning against the wall. Many of them had red faces and lowered their heads. Some looked unconvinced, some were disdainful, and some had no expression on their faces.
Now the teacher began to criticize each of them one by one, and several girls shed tears because of the scolding.
Li Tianyou was one of the students who was late. He was the one with a look of dissatisfaction and disdain on his face. He looked like he had not woken up yet, and was leaning against the wall with his eyes closed.
When he started scolding Li Tianyou, Li Tianyou opened his eyes, listened to him, and then went into the classroom.
I was really sleepy in the morning. I started memorizing before morning self-study even started. Many people stood up in the classroom because I was afraid that they would fall asleep while sitting. However, if you are severely sleep deprived, it is not surprising to fall asleep while standing.
Day after day, the teacher came to check for latecomers the next day, and Li Tianyou was late again. In fact, he was not late this time. He arrived at 5:38, but the teacher stopped a group of people again.
The teacher was really angry and yelled, "Why are you late every day?"
The teacher looked around and found Li Tianyou, still leaning against the wall with his eyes closed. He pointed at him and scolded him:
"Especially you, Li Tianyou. You were here yesterday, but why are you still here today?"
"Teacher, I'm not late today. None of us are late. You said to be in the classroom at 5:40, but I came at 5:38. Look at my watch, it's only 40 now. You caught me too early."
When the teacher heard this, she was surprised that this person actually talked back to her. No other student had ever talked back to her in all these years.
"Why didn't you come on time if you weren't late? What's your attitude about coming on time?"
"You didn't say I couldn't come on time."
The teacher was so angry that his face turned red and the classmate next to him pulled Li Tianyou, signaling him to stop talking.
The teacher wrote down their names, scolded them in front of the whole class during the morning class, and then started the class.
The eighth class in the afternoon was self-study. There was a pile of homework and many students were at a loss as to what to do. Wen Yi, who sat behind Li Tianyou, was one of them.
Wen Yi has a headache with math class. She doesn't understand what is being taught in class and can't do the exercises after class. The teacher thinks she doesn't ask questions, but she has fallen so far behind that she doesn't know how to ask.
Wen Yi likes to study geography, but since this subject is no longer taught in the third year of junior high school and is not included in the high school entrance examination, no one takes it seriously. Wen Yi thinks this is wrong. Why should so much time be spent on mathematics? Is geography taught by a stepmother?
During this self-study class, Li Tianyou's deskmate moved to Wen Yi's. They were friends and often spent time together. Wen Yi was a quiet and passive person, so she moved to Li Tianyou's place.
Wen Yi said nothing here, looking at the math problems that she couldn't solve, racking her brains to think of solutions and looking at example questions.
This was not the first time they had changed seats, but she had hardly ever spoken to Li Tianyou. Every time she came, Li Tianyou would see the veins bulging on her temples.
Li Tianyou understood very well how a math problem could drive a classmate into this state. Today, he took the initiative to speak to Wen Yi.
"Wen Yi, can you do these questions?"
Wen Yi put down her pen, turned around, and whispered, "No."
"If you don't know, then don't study. What's the point of studying so much? Why not study something you're good at to improve your grades? Your academic ranking is not low, so why bother studying math so hard?"
"But the teacher said math is very important and it's a subject that helps you get a good score on the high school entrance exam. If you give up math, you'll give up on the high school entrance exam. Math will still be very important in high school. If you can't learn it now, you won't be able to keep up later."
"But will you learn it even if you study so hard now? Look how tired you are. Take a break."
Wen Yi really wanted to rest. Math was killing her. Ever since physics was added to her second year of junior high, it was giving her a headache. She felt like she wasn't naturally interested in science, and the teacher kept saying, "Catch up on physics, we're going to add chemistry soon."
Mathematics, physics and chemistry have given Wen Yi a headache. Her thin figure always appears in the classroom. Even during holidays, she will show up in the cram school.
But after learning so much, she didn't know where all the knowledge went. Wen Yi felt that she was very stupid. She couldn't even remember the solutions to the quadratic equation.
Root-finding formula, cross-intersection, matching method, what are these?
And what about quadratic functions? What were they? I hadn't learned them when I was dealing with linear functions, and quadratic functions and parabolas were just a mess in my head. Li Tianyou slept in math class every day, but his grades were still better than hers.
The first class in the evening is math. The math teacher is a very fierce woman. Her principle is that if you study well, everything will be good, but if you don’t study well, nothing will be good.
This class was about distributing the test papers from the last time. Wen Yi was so scared that her hands were shaking and her palms were sweating.
"Did I throw everything I taught you in class to the dogs? You got this low score on the test. How dare you live in this world?"
The math teacher started to yell and rant, and everyone was silent.
After the scolding, they started to go up one by one to collect the papers. As usual, everyone who did well would be praised, and those who did not do well would be scolded.
"Wen Yi!"
Wen Yi was shocked. She went up to get her test paper and found that she had only scored 42 points, a very shameful score.
