Chapter 84 The Real Dream
"Pour me some water," Xiao Sui commanded without even looking up as he wrote at his desk.
Ning Qi glanced around out of the corner of her eye and realized that there were no other corpse demons in the study, only herself.
She could only drag her stiff legs forward a few steps, pick up the teapot, pour a cup of water, and hand it to him.
Xiao Sui took it, sipped it briefly, and then put it down.
Ning Qi wailed inwardly, "Being a Corpse Demon isn't easy!"
She hadn't slept for two days and two nights in this dream, serving Xiao Sui, and her face was probably even more haggard than the Corpse Demon's.
The bluish-purple powder she wore kept dripping down and staining her clothes. She could only pray that Xiao Sui couldn't see it.
Even when she was sleeping at night, she would stay by Xiao Sui's side. Every time she was about to fall asleep, he would suddenly make a sound and order her to do some trivial things.
She was increasingly suspicious that Xiao Sui had seen through her clumsy disguise and knew she wasn't infected by the Corpse Demon, and was deliberately torturing her.
But Ning Xi dared not expose it, for if she did, she would only face certain death.
The Xiao Sui in her dream was different from the Xiao Sui she knew. He had no feelings for her. In his eyes, she was no different from the cultivators he had killed.
Moreover, after a few days of investigation, it became clear that his power was even greater than it actually was; not only in the mortal realm, but even in the immortal realm, people were wary of him.
She stood quietly by the side, watching as Xiao Sui summoned the Right Protector, casually pointing at the paper in his hand, "There's news in the mortal realm that the emperor has adopted a goddaughter."
The Right Protector raised an eyebrow. "Why are you interested in the affairs of mortals?"
Xiao Sui casually looked at Ning Qi, a slight smile playing on his lips. "That old emperor sent his own daughter to me as a hostage, but then turned around and adopted a goddaughter, ignoring her completely. It really makes one suspicious of this woman's identity."
Ning Qi felt a chill run down his spine; he was far too perceptive.
"Give me all her information." Xiao Sui tapped the table casually.
Ning Qi's heart skipped a beat and became out of rhythm.
Within half a day, the Right Protector had reported all of Ningxi's information to Xiao Sui.
Ning Qi secretly glanced at him, looking at the few sheets of paper he was flipping through, which had very few words on them.
Xiao Sui quickly threw them on the table. "I can't see anything wrong with it, but if she really lived a life of luxury as the information says, her skin shouldn't be so rough, and she wouldn't have chilblains on her fingers."
Ning Xi felt Xiao Sui's gaze sweeping over her. She resisted the urge to hide her fingers, not expecting him to be so observant.
"Go investigate again." Xiao Sui threw the papers back into the arms of the Right Protector.
The Right Protector left with Ning Qi's information, giving her a fierce glare as he passed by, as if scolding her for adding to her workload.
Ning Xi simply couldn't spare any energy for him. She hadn't slept in a long time, and was feeling dizzy and lightheaded. Her steps were unsteady, and she was afraid that she would faint here and give herself away.
"You should go out too," Xiao Sui said.
Ning Qi felt as if she had been granted a pardon. She turned around and rushed out quickly, completely forgetting that she was a controlled corpse demon.
These corpse demons don't need rest. When they have no work to do, they are all herded into a warehouse and locked up there.
Ning Qi's wrists were bound by iron rings, fixed at a distance of one person's length and width, preventing her from reaching the other corpse demons.
The sounds of corpse demons echoed around her, sending chills down her spine, but she couldn't care less. She discovered that she was quite adaptable to all sorts of harsh environments.
Once the demon guards who had driven them in closed the door, the storeroom was completely dark. She immediately lay down on the spot and quickly drifted off to sleep amidst the commotion.
When she woke up again, she was still in that dark warehouse, unable to return to reality.
However, she felt that her energy had recovered a lot. She could hear two corpse demons nearby talking about which kind of person tasted better. One said that the higher the cultivation level, the more delicious the person was, while the other strongly disagreed with this statement.
Most of the other corpse demons could only utter meaningless cries.
She listened with great interest, falling asleep when she was tired and chatting with the corpse demon when she woke up. She didn't know how much time had passed when the storeroom door suddenly opened, and a demon guard walked up to her, untied the iron rings from her hands, and said, "Come with me."
Ning Qi immediately got into the zone, stiffening her legs as she followed behind.
The corpse demon that had been chatting stopped talking and hissed, "It doesn't need the control ring."
"How come it's so obedient?"
Ning Qi listened with confusion. What control ring? There has never been one before.
The demon guard led her to the main hall. As soon as she got close, her vision blurred, and she belatedly realized that her stomach was empty and she felt very uncomfortable.
Xiao Sui sat at the table, holding a stack of things in his hand. When Ning Qi came in, he did not look up and asked the Right Protector, "What reason would a frail princess have to secretly escape from the sect and live in exile for ten years?"
Ning Qi listened blankly. Was this about her? She had escaped from the Huaguang Sect and been in exile for ten years?!
The Right Protector shrugged. "They must have committed a crime, like murder or arson."
“That makes sense,” Xiao Sui affirmed. “After all, this princess was just captured by the Huaguang Sect and immediately sent here to me.”
Xiao Sui looked at Ning Qi, his gaze so sharp it seemed to pierce through her heart. "Confess, why did you pretend to be a corpse demon to stay by my side?"
Ning Xi was taken aback, but it wasn't unexpected, since her disguise as a corpse demon was full of flaws.
She lowered her head, feeling herself desperately squeezing out tears. "Demon God, I had no choice. I'm not the emperor's biological daughter at all. He wanted to kill me for his biological daughter. After I discovered the truth, I had no choice but to run away."
Xiao Sui propped his head up with his hand. "You want to kill me for your own daughter? Why?"
"Because his own daughter didn't live long, he wanted me to take her place and die in her place so that they could deceive the heavens and let their own daughter live to be a hundred years old. What could I do? I had no choice but to leave in order to save my own life."
Ning Xi was stunned after hearing this. Wasn't this the plot of the original book? How could she know this in her dream?
"An interesting statement," Xiao Sui commented, then said to the Right Protector, "Throw her into the pile of corpse demons and execute her."
Ning Qi immediately shouted at the top of her lungs, "Demon God, Demon God, please show mercy, I will absolutely be loyal to you."
"Wake up." Someone was patting her. Ning Qi suddenly opened her eyes and saw a magnified bluish-purple face. She almost gasped and fainted again.
She realized it was Zheng Xinyu, and her racing heartbeat gradually calmed down.
"Nightmare?" Zheng Xinyu asked.
Ning Qi shook her head. "It's not really, it's just strange. It felt so real, like it had happened before."
Zheng Xinyu frowned at her, clearly not understanding what she meant, but she quickly raised her hand cheerfully and offered her her arm.
"Should we change the gauze?" Ning Xi looked at the arm. It had been broken yesterday, but it looked completely healed today.
“No,” Zheng Xinyu said, “the color has faded.”
Ning Xi looked down again and understood what she meant. A small part of her arm had returned to its normal skin color and was no longer bluish-purple.
She exclaimed in surprise, "Could it be that the Corpse Demon's state is reversible?"
"I don't know." Zheng Xinyu shook her head, but her expression was clearly happy.
Ning Xi grabbed her arm and examined it. "Could it be the branch that's doing the work? Does that tree have this effect?"
Zheng Xinyu said, "Your spiritual power."
Ning Qi blinked. "You mean because of my spiritual power, your arm can return to normal?"
Zheng Xinyu nodded with a hesitant sound.
Ning Xi was skeptical, but she was willing to try, injecting her spiritual energy into Zheng Xinyu's arm.
The two waited for a while, but did not see her skin color return to normal.
"Probably in a few days," Zheng Xinyu said.
Ning Qi nodded, remembering her mission, and took out the recording stone. "Have you seen this person before?"
After looking at her for a while, Zheng Xinyu said, "I've seen her before. I'll call her."
She opened her mouth wide, and a lower, more rapid sound came from her throat.
Not long after, a female corpse demon appeared outside the cave.
Ning Xi climbed out and took a look. Perhaps because Zheng Xinyu was nearby, the corpse demon was not aggressive at all. It just stood there with a blank stare, letting her examine it.
Fortunately, its face was intact, and Ning Qi quickly confirmed that it was her mission target.
Finally found it, she breathed a sigh of relief, took off a ring from the corpse demon's hand, put it into her storage bag, and prepared to take it back to report.
"Thank you," she said to Zheng Xinyu. "I need to go back to the mortal realm to finish my mission. I'll be back soon, and I'll follow you from now on."
“Okay.” Zheng Xinyu nodded.
“Do you have anything you want to give to your sister? I can help you take it back,” Ning Xi said.
Zheng Xinyu lowered her completely black eyes. "No."
Ning Xi thought for a moment. She had nowhere to buy new things. Even if she had jewelry, it would be taken from dead people, and she definitely wouldn't give it to her sister.
Seriously, what kind of question was that?
Ning Qi held the teleportation array and left the cave.
Zheng Xinyu watched her leave.
Ningxi's spiritual energy gradually disappeared from her range of perception, and another powerful and terrifying demonic energy quietly arrived.
Xiao Sui's figure gradually appeared before her. "Where is she going?"
"Mortal Realm, hand in the mission," Zheng Xinyu said.
The man in front of her seemed to panic instantly, asking her incredulously, "She's just here to do a body-finding mission?"
"yes."
"Didn't she mention coming to see me?" Xiao Sui asked again.
Zheng Xinyu shook her head.
At that moment, a snapping sound was heard. Cracks appeared on the trunks of three or four thick trees behind Xiao Sui, and they soon fell to the ground with several loud thuds.
Xiao Sui forced himself to calm down and asked again, "Is she alright?"
Zheng Xinyu shook her head again. "She's fine."
"You weren't bitten by the corpse demon?"
"No," Zheng Xinyu said definitively.
Xiao Sui slowly loosened his tightly clenched hands, following the traces of spiritual energy, keeping a distance behind Ning Qi.
Ning Qi returned to the location of the teleportation array, and strangely, there were several corpses of corpse demons on the ground.
Did Zheng Xinyu do it?
Without thinking much, she poured spiritual energy into the disc and suddenly felt a surge of heat rising from her body. As the spiritual energy circulated, it spread rapidly throughout her body, making her feel as if her skin was on fire.
This feeling wasn't unfamiliar; she had the same reaction after being bitten by a corpse demon. How come she still had the same reaction now that she had a new body?
Ning Xi couldn't hold onto the disc properly, and it slipped from her grasp and fell to the ground. She couldn't pick it up, and she clutched her chest, panting heavily, feeling as if she were in a furnace, about to burst into smoke.
Before she was completely burned to ashes, she seemed to fall into a familiar embrace, a comforting aura enveloping her.
Her fingers unconsciously gripped his fabric tightly, and her consciousness once again slipped into a dream.
