Chapter 183 No Promises Will Be Made

It was obvious that Yu Jingchen had heard those words as well.

"This old minister greets Your Majesty," Nan Su said, realizing what was happening.

"Your Majesty, I greet you." Nan Zhiyun felt a little uneasy. She didn't know if Yu Jingchen would be angry with her father because of what she had just said.

"No need for formalities," Yu Jingchen said calmly.

"Thank you, Your Majesty," the two said, rising to their feet.

"What Nanqing just said is probably not going to work." Yu Jingchen said directly, without any beating around the bush.

"Your Majesty, this old minister only wishes to spend more time with his family. If Your Majesty can grant this request, this old minister is willing to relinquish his military power." Now that he had been overheard, he made no attempt to cover it up.

“This matter is of great importance, and I cannot grant your request. Minister Nan is the foremost general of our dynasty, and I will need to rely on him in the future,” Yu Jingchen said frankly.

"Your Majesty..." Nan Su was about to say something more, but Yu Jingchen raised his hand to stop him.

"Minister Nan, there's no need for further words. I will not grant your request." Yu Jingchen's attitude was clear.

“Yes…” Nan Su had no choice.

Just... quiet

So...how awkward...

Yu Jingchen coughed lightly, breaking the silence.

"Please take a seat," Yu Jingchen said, then prepared to walk towards the head of the table.

"Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun called out tentatively.

"Hmm? What's wrong?" Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun.

"Your Majesty, I would like to speak with Father again... Your Majesty promised..." Nan Zhiyun carefully reminded him.

"There's still plenty of time. Are you finding me in your way?" Yu Jingchen said half-jokingly.

"I didn't mean that, I just..." Nan Zhiyun didn't know how to express herself, but she felt that Yu Jingchen's presence made her feel a little awkward... (to put it bluntly, he was an eyesore).

Nan Su's gaze swept over the two of them, seemingly lost in thought. Finally, he cupped his hands and said, "Your Majesty, the Empress has been spoiled by this old minister and the Empress Dowager since childhood. If she has said or done anything inappropriate, please forgive her."

"It's alright, Consort Shu is doing quite well now." Yu Jingchen sat down in his seat.

"Your Majesty has always been spoiled by this old minister and the Empress Dowager. She can't stand hardship and makes a fuss over even the slightest bump or bruise. This old minister never imagined she would enter the palace. I heard that Your Majesty has incurred the Emperor's wrath before..." Nan Su said meaningfully, and then knelt down.

"Father..." Nan Zhiyun was somewhat bewildered, and finally had no choice but to kneel down as well.

"This old minister dares to say that even if Your Majesty has many faults, it is my fault for failing to properly educate you. I have been guarding the frontier for many years and have neglected to discipline my only daughter. Therefore, I hope Your Majesty can be more tolerant of Your Majesty. If Your Majesty has truly committed a grave error, then this old minister is willing to take the blame for my daughter..." Nan Su kowtowed to Yu Jingchen.

"Father..." Nan Zhiyun wanted to say something, but she didn't know how to say it.

Yu Jingchen looked down at the person below, remaining silent for a moment. Nan Su made no other move, nor did he rise. After a while, Yu Jingchen slowly stood up, then walked directly to Nan Su, reaching out to help him up: "Don't worry, Nan Qing. I was a bit narrow-minded in the past, but I won't be like that in the future."

"This old minister is terrified," Nan Su said, his face showing little emotion.

Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun again, and then said to Nan Su, "It was my fault before. I know I was confused. Please forgive me, Minister Nan."

Nan Su bowed, saying he dared not accept such an honor.

"Consort Shu usually cares a lot about Nanqing and often thinks about him. Now that Nanqing has returned, why not let him stay a little longer? If there is time later, I can also let Consort Shu return to the General's Mansion for a few days," Yu Jingchen said.

Nan Su's eyes flickered slightly: "Then this old minister thanks Your Majesty in advance." After saying this, Nan Su added: "Your Majesty, this old minister has just returned to the capital today and has many trivial matters to attend to, so I will take my leave first."

“Nanqing has had a long journey; she should take a good rest for a couple of days,” Yu Jingchen said.

"Yes, thank you for your concern, Your Majesty. This old minister will take his leave." Nan Su nodded.

"Xinglai, let's see the General Zhenguo off." Yu Jingchen did not keep anyone.

"Yes," Xing Lai accepted the order, then looked at Nan Su and gestured for him to enter: "General Zhenguo, please."

Nan Su didn't linger; he glanced at Nan Zhiyun and Yu Jingchen before leaving.

Nan Zhiyun watched Nan Su's departing figure with a sense of reluctance.

“If you want to see me, you can.” Yu Jingchen looked at Nan Zhiyun beside him.

"Hmm..." Nan Zhiyun was not in a good mood.

"You've been standing outside for so long, are you cold? Don't catch a cold. I'll have someone make some ginger soup and bring it over later." Yu Jingchen stepped forward and took Nan Zhiyun's hand. Nan Zhiyun tried to pull away, but Yu Jingchen's grip was quite strong.

"I am fine," Nan Zhiyun replied.

Yu Jingchen pulled the person over and made them sit down: "Were you disappointed this time?" he asked.

"Hmm? Your Majesty, I don't understand." Nan Zhiyun truly didn't understand.

"This time, in addition to you, I have also issued an imperial decree to bestow titles upon the harem. Are you unhappy about this?" Yu Jingchen asked again.

"...Your Majesty is overthinking it." In the past, she might have minded, but now she doesn't dwell on these things as much.

"There are some things I don't know how to tell you, but don't worry, I will resolve everything. I won't let those dirty things affect you." Yu Jingchen let Nan Zhiyun lean against him.

“Your Majesty need not tell me these things,” Nan Zhiyun said.

"The Empress Dowager has sent a message back." Yu Jingchen suddenly changed the subject, and Nan Zhiyun almost didn't react at first. After hearing what Yu Jingchen said, she was immediately overjoyed.
