"His Majesty said the Empress Dowager is coming back?" Nan Zhiyun asked, her eyes filled with surprise.
Yu Jingchen felt a pang of sadness. See? She always cares about others more than she does about herself. Is the original Nan Zhiyun really going to disappear?
"Yes, she's coming back." Yu Jingchen gently touched the top of Nan Zhiyun's head.
"He'll probably be back in the next couple of days," Yu Jingchen said.
"The Empress Dowager hasn't sent me a single letter these past few days..." Nan Zhiyun perked up, though her tone held a hint of dissatisfaction.
"What's wrong? Are you still unhappy?" Yu Jingchen smiled, somewhat helplessly.
"No..." Nan Zhiyun denied, and lowered her head.
"Don't worry, the most important person in your Empress Dowager's eyes and heart is only you. No one can take that away from her," Yu Jingchen said, his tone slightly teasing.
Nan Zhiyun blushed slightly. She was never used to Yu Jingchen talking to her like that, as if he were raising a young lady.
Just a quick aside: the pacing of this book will be a bit slow, which might be due to my personal style. Also, I wanted to portray the emotions between the characters in more nuanced ways. Although my writing may not be the best and I might not achieve the desired effect, I still wanted to follow my own pace. I hope you can understand.
The romance in this story will progress rather slowly. I also wanted to write their initial feelings as naturally as possible, and to make the later changes more reasonable. And if you look at the details, there are actually many subtle shifts in the story.
Don't get hung up on whether the male lead's feelings for the female lead are based on guilt. In fact, as the story progresses, the feelings between the characters will become very clear, regardless of whether it's out of guilt or not.
