Chapter Ninety-Seven: The Jade Pendant Cannot Be Retrieved

Erni lowered her head, heartbroken. That was a gift from Qian Duobao, and she had promised to protect it carefully; it had been stolen by Daya.

It was also her fault; she wasn't on guard against Zhao Daya. Daya said the string on the jade pendant was a bit old and she wanted to make her a new one. Without thinking, she took it off and handed it to Zhao Daya. Then, when she went back to find Daya after all that, she discovered Daya had already returned to the Zhao family with the jade pendant.

Da Ya's father pawned the jade pendant.

Now the jade pendant can never be retrieved. Erni thought of how solemnly Qian Duobao had given her the jade pendant.

Thinking of what Qian Duobao said about how, if she grew up and became like this, she would use this jade pendant as proof that she would still recognize him.

Now that Zhao Family Village is gone, and they've come here, Duobao probably won't be able to find her.

The jade pendant is gone too. Even if the two meet again when they're older, they probably won't recognize each other.

Thinking this, her eyes filled with tears. She was very sad and upset, and she also hated Zhao Daya. Erni ran home.

Li Rouniang could only say to Zhao Dahu, "The total amount written on this pawn ticket is still short of the money you've given me. Write me an IOU for that part and pay me back within a month."

Zhao Dahu looked at Dahe and Erhe with apprehension, seemingly wanting to say something, but ultimately dared not argue further, and nodded.

Li Rouniang glanced at Daya again. Then she said to the Zhao family, "I traded half a bag of grain for this child. Although she did do some work along the way, I didn't skimp on her food and clothing. Since you want to take her back, I won't ask for more. Just give me back the half bag of grain you gave me back then, and we'll be even from now on."

Look, you're only worth half a bag of grain!

"Aunt Li, I'm so sorry." Zhao Daya still felt bad after hearing Li Rouniang's words.

However, Li Rouniang didn't even glance at her, took the things, turned around, and went home.
