Chapter 10

[The gift has been delivered.

Thousand Silk Grass: A specialty from the continent of Atlantis, a gift from the mermaid prince Noel Atlantis.]

Like other large algae in the sea, the benign and harmless Thousand Silk Grass stands quietly on the seabed, drifting with the waves. If you enter a Thousand Silk Grass forest out of hunger or curiosity, it will instantly drop its disguise and make you its food. Of course, if you're strong enough, it will naturally be your food too.

A kind note from Noel Atlantis:

[Teacher, the sedge will rot immediately if it's out of water, so never take it out of the water. Also, live sedge is very dangerous, so be sure to cut off the roots before eating it to kill it. Be careful not to get hurt. I'll give you one for the experiment and one for you to eat. It's super delicious!]

[By the way, since you're a human, just soak the whole herb in water and eat it! The root of the herb is the best, and it's sweet like jelly.]

Looking at the long prompts and instructions on the phone, Yan Jue fell into silence for a long, long time... After preparing himself mentally, Yan Jue stood three steps away from the glass jar and looked at the thousand-thread grass.

What he thought was a "human head" was actually the bulbous root of the Thousand Silk Grass. The human features on it were patterned, without the bumps and depressions that would be expected of an organ. Between the root and the palm-thick, black, muddy mass at the bottom of the glass jar, there were indeed inconspicuous, densely packed white roots.

The "long black hair" is not hair texture nor black, but an extremely rich dark green seaweed.

Looking closer, the Thousand Silk Grass really didn't look that much like a human; it was just a strange-looking plant. Yan Jue patted his chest, recovering from the shock he had just experienced, and couldn't help but feel a headache coming back.

Is it really thoughtful of Noel? Knowing that he had used the previous gift for an experiment and didn't eat it, he actually sent him two more this time, increasing the quantity without raising the price, and even specifically stating that one of them was specifically for him to use for research!

What should he do?

If he didn't eat, what would he say if Noel asked him? If he answered wrong, wouldn't Noel know he was lying? If he ate...

Even though Noel carefully told him how to eat it, he didn't want to eat something from another world that he didn't know if it would have any side effects on Earthlings!

Where’s the game, where’s the customer service, just come up with a random creature and explain it to him!

Yan Jue squatted in his room, a look of vicissitudes watching the soldiers scramble to get rid of the Thousand Silk Grass. He then returned to his dormitory with a sense of despair. It was dinner time, and he, always the first one to rush to the cafeteria, had no appetite today. He huddled in his dormitory, absent-mindedly watching a movie.

"Little Lord?"

There was a knock on the door. Yan Jue got up and opened the door for Pan Wencheng, inviting him in.

"Director Pan, what's going on?"

"Nothing, I just heard someone didn't see you in the cafeteria today, so I came to ask." Pan Wencheng smiled and said, "I heard about what happened today. Was it that Qiansi grass that scared you and made you lose your appetite?"

Yan Jue felt embarrassed and waved his hands to redeem himself: "No, no, I was just caught off guard and frightened, that's all. I'm fine now."

Facing Pan Wencheng who was concerned about him, Yan Jue said frankly: "I am just worried about how to perfectly deceive Noel. I have already eaten the Thousand Silk Grass."

Yes, he had already decided that he would never eat that thing even if he was beaten to death, and he could only feel sorry for Noel.

Pan Wencheng gave him a sympathetic look: "Don't worry, there are so many of us, there must be a solution."

Yan Jue nodded and said embarrassedly, "Director Pan, I'm sorry for bothering you to come and see me. Have you eaten yet? Don't delay your meal."

"It's okay. I had already eaten outside when I came back."

Pan Wencheng thought about it and decided to reveal a little news to Yan Jue in advance to cheer him up: "This afternoon, after the expert team recorded Noel's voice, they conducted research on his voice, and then something very strange happened."

Yan Jue: “Oh?”

"In our world, sound can be captured by our existing instruments. When we import the sound into sequencing software, corresponding ripples will appear. But Noel is different. The recordings of him speaking normally can't capture his 'waves' on any instrument. Only the audio of him singing shows intermittent 'waves'."

Yan Jue understood a little: "You mean, Noel's normal speaking and singing are two different forms of expression?"

"Yes." Pan Wencheng nodded. "He said that the mermaid's power can only be stimulated through singing. So now the expert team speculates that only when Noel uses his power can his voice be captured by our equipment. Only when his audio track is complete can it be considered that he has truly used his power."

Yan Jue was speechless for a while after hearing this.

The magical magic they had always believed in was captured so easily by his scientific instruments?

He thought that Noel's world had always been noble and out of reach for ordinary humans, but it turned out that the real situation was that it was even more backward than them?

Banishing the strange thoughts from his mind, Yan Jue said, "So, does that mean that as long as we find a way to complete Noel's soundtrack, we can solve his problem?"

This is much better than their previous blind guessing. They have found the right direction!

Yan Jue said happily, "Whatever suggestions the expert group makes next, I will persuade Noel to cooperate. By the way, Director Pan, can you tell Noel the research results?"

"It should be possible, but I can't make the decision myself. The specific notification will have to wait for the experimental results of the expert group tomorrow." Pan Wencheng winked at him: "I sneaked in to tell you, their experiments are not completed yet, so I will notify you tomorrow."

"Thank you, Director Pan!"

"Happy? Do you still have an appetite now?"

"Huh?" Yan Jue was stunned for a moment, and suddenly felt his face getting hot: "Director Pan..."

He's already 26, and he still has the luxury of being coaxed by his elders? How shameful!

Pan Wencheng noticed Yan Jue's embarrassment and patted him on the shoulder. He said kindly, "I'm almost fifty years old. When I'm with those young subordinates, I always feel like I'm looking after children. It's a good thing they don't mind my nagging. You're not even as old as my subordinates, so of course you shouldn't be deprived of the treatment you deserve."

Yan Jue could only nod and go to eat obediently.

To be honest, it feels great to be cared for by elders.

He couldn't help but think of the group of uncles and aunts, led by Uncle Yuan. Ever since his parents' death, their comrades had silently taken on the responsibility of caring for their son. Growing up under their care all these years, Yan Jue had never felt a lack of family affection. He was deeply grateful to them.

But then again, he hadn't heard from Uncle Yuan since they'd separated here. Could he be busy with a new case? The police were truly busy.

The next day, after receiving the notice from the expert group, Yan Jue immediately told Noel the research results and successfully diverted the matter of Qiansicao.

The little mermaid was so excited about the new substantial progress that she swam back and forth in the swimming pool like a husky on break free. Such a small fish actually stirred up the entire pool of water.

The favorability level soared directly to ninety-eight, just a little bit away from one hundred.

"Noel, Noel——"

After shouting several times to regain the little mermaid's sanity, Yan Jue said sternly to Noel who swam over, "Noel, we have now found the right research direction, but this does not mean that we will definitely succeed. Do you understand?"

Before any other discoveries are made, capturing sound waves to help Noel find a new way to use his power may be the only way for their world. If this path is not feasible, then they can only wait indefinitely.

He was very happy, and he was even happier to see Noel happy, but he also hoped that Noel would be mentally prepared.

"clear!"

Noel wagged his tail, a smile that couldn't be erased. "When I realized I was tone-deaf, I accepted my fate. It was the teacher who gave me new hope. Even if this hope doesn't come true, I'll just be back to square one."

After a pause, Noel stretched out his hand again and gestured a short distance: "But I might be a little sad, only a little bit. Then, the teacher will accompany me, right?"

"Yes, the teacher will accompany you!"

Yan Jue was so pleased that he was almost speechless. What a sensible little cub! Noel was simply the perfect cub in the hearts of all creatures!

If I didn't give those weird, horribly ugly gifts...

With Noel's nod of agreement, the teacher and student began various attempts in the following days, interspersed with relaxing teacher-student interactions such as games. This made Noel much happier than studying alone before.

During the experiment, they quickly ruled out reading out lyrics, and tried continuously repeating a paragraph, reciting idioms, poems, novels, scripts, operas, etc. They tried almost every method of vocal expression that Noel and the expert team could think of, but the results were not satisfactory.

Before Noel showed his disappointment, Yan Jue couldn't stand it anymore. After turning off the game, he often looked depressed.

If this continues, there will be no other possibility except bad news, and he doesn't want to see Noel's sad expression.

Yan Jue now truly has the mentality of an old father. In front of his children, he always pretends to be nonchalant and optimistic that there will be hope if he persists. But in fact, behind his back, he has begun to worry about what to do if the bad results come out, whether the children can bear it, and how to comfort them.

I wish I could feel my child's disappointment and sadness firsthand in advance, so as to find the most reliable way to comfort him.

On the contrary, Noel, after experiencing many failures, still looks enthusiastic.

That day, after learning of the failure of his experiment for the umpteenth time, Noel clenched his fist and shouted as if a flame ignited behind him, "Teacher's world won't work. Next, let's experiment with the literature in my world!"

Um?

Yan Jue stood up instantly.

How could he not have thought that countries in the same world have different currencies, and the cultural systems between the two worlds are even more different!
