Chapter 11

Yan Jue woke up in a daze, looking at the ceiling of the dormitory and was a little overwhelmed.

Isn't he playing games?

Just after entering the game that morning, he heard Noel say he had found a collection of poetry from his own world, supposedly written by a famous bard, and that he planned to use it as a starting point for his experiments. Yan Jue didn't understand the culture of the other world, so he naturally took Noel's advice at face value. He also wanted to hear what the legendary bard's poems were about.

Then Noel began to read from the poetry collection.

After that, he knew nothing.

Thinking of this, Yan Jue's expression became strange.

"Mr. Yan, Mr. Yan? Are you okay?"

Yan Jue blinked and looked at a familiar face standing beside him with a worried expression. He was the kind of person who worked in the same courtyard, but they had never spoken to each other and had only met a few times when the other person changed shifts.

"I'm fine." Yan Jue slowly shook his head. "What happened?"

Brother Bing helped Yan Jue up and said quickly, "You and Director Pan suddenly fainted in your room this morning. After checking you, we found that you were just unconscious and your bodies didn't appear to be injured. So the higher-ups arranged for me to come and watch over you."

"And they also said that if you wake up, they'll send you to the confidential room right away. It's urgent."

As for what was in the confidential room, those on duty had no idea. He just had to convey the instructions to Yan Jue and he would have completed his mission.

Yan Juezhi understood immediately and hurriedly put on his shoes and ran outside. As soon as he went out, he found that the sky was already full of sunset glow and the sun was about to set.

He was unconscious for the whole day?

Without giving it much thought, Yan Jue entered the empty confidential room and came to the table. His phone was plugged in and the screen was on, but the viewpoint remained in Noel's dormitory, where he had entered that morning. It was obvious that he hadn't left the room since he fainted.

Noel was lying on a bed of shells, touching his scales one by one with his fingers. However, his boring movements did not seem leisurely. Instead, he would count the scales a few times before turning over, kneading the cushions beneath him, frowning, and tying the ends of his long hair into a knot, then untying it again and again.

Yan Jue's eyes softened and he softly called Noel's name to remind him that he was coming.

"Teacher, is there something wrong with you?"

As soon as he heard the teacher's voice, Noel left the shell bed like an arrow from Li Xuan and stuck to the screen, flapping his tail wildly behind him, knocking out several innocent fish and jellyfish passing by.

Noel had no intention of paying attention to those trivial matters. He swam to the invisible "wall" of the bedroom, placed his hands on it, and looked up anxiously to ask, "No matter how I called you this morning, you didn't respond. I felt you left, but you never disappear without saying hello, teacher. Is there something wrong with you?"

Yan Jue could sense the worry in the rambling question. His heart softened, and he reached up to tap Noel's chubby cheek, which was glued to the screen. He patted his head before slowly saying, "A small incident did occur, but it wasn't a bad thing; it was a very good thing."

This was the first time that Noel was so close to the screen, so close that Yan Jue could clearly see the lines in Noel's blue pupils.

"Good news?" Noel opened his mouth, somewhat unable to follow Yan Jue's train of thought. However, when he reacted, the worry on his face disappeared in an instant. He stepped back and stood in mid-air with his hands on his chest, his mouth pouting so much that an oil bottle could be hung on it.

"What good thing could possibly make the teacher go back on his word and leave me alone without a word? Humph, has the teacher forgotten what we agreed on?"

Yan Jue narrowed his eyes, not at all frightened by Nuoer's words. Instead, he said quietly, "This matter began with a poem recited by a little mermaid..."

Noel had an expression that said, "I'm waiting for you to make it up."

"That little mermaid was reciting a very famous poem. Unfortunately, not only did I not understand what it was saying, I didn't even finish it. I fainted halfway through." Yan Jue sighed loudly. "She rolled her eyes and fell to the ground. I didn't wake up until just now."

"Poor teacher, not only was he knocked unconscious for no apparent reason, but he also ended up being blamed by the culprit."

Yan Jue asked maliciously: "Noel, do you think that little mermaid is very evil?"

Noel was dumbfounded.

He froze in place with his eyes wide open. Because he didn't swing his tail to maintain balance, he slowly fell down. Only when he touched the ground did he suddenly wake up and rush to the screen again, saying in disbelief, "Teacher, are you, are you telling the truth?"

"How is it possible? It's so simple? No way, teacher, are you deliberately making up an excuse to lie to me? How could it be..."

In fact, Yan Jue was also surprised.

He never expected that Noel was tone-deaf and had no way of using his own power to solve the problem, so he just replaced singing with reciting poetry!

It's that simple, solved.

No matter how unwilling to believe it, it is true that he and Pan Wencheng, two healthy people, suddenly fainted after hearing Noel reciting a poem in a room so confidential that not even a mosquito could get in. This is the most ironclad evidence.

After giving Noel a moment to mumble and digest the surprise, Yan Jue nodded at the still dazed little mermaid and asked, "Noel, do you have a way to test whether your voice has power? Besides poetry, see if any literary works from your world are any use."

"The teacher can't help you this time."

It's not that I can't "sacrifice" myself and be a guinea pig for Noel, but doing so would be too wasteful.

Noel nodded dumbly, then nodded again, then suddenly paused on the third time. His tail straightened as he spoke rapidly, "I'll try it right away! I'm sorry, teacher. I didn't mean to attack you. I can't play with you today. See you after I finish the experiment."

"The book says that apologies must be sincere. I'll prepare a super nice gift for the teacher. Goodbye, teacher. I'm sorry!"

As the dormitory door was closed, Yan Jue felt helpless and almost reached out to Erkang.

Hey, I don't need a gift!

It’s a pity that Noel has been in seclusion, so we can’t hear his inner cry and he doesn’t have the chance to speak it out.

After walking out of the door with a gloomy face, Yan Jue stood in the yard and looked at the clouds that had turned blue and purple. He turned around and asked the soldier at the door: "How is Director Pan? Is he awake?"

What he actually wanted to ask was whether the members of the expert group were okay.

Brother Bing shook his head: "Mr. Yan, there is no news yet."

Yan Jue nodded, glanced at Pan Wencheng's currently quiet dormitory, and returned to his room to sort out this sudden and explosive news. If only Director Pan were here, he would have someone to discuss it with.

Unexpectedly, just as Yan Jue pushed open the door and hadn't even stepped inside, there was a noise coming from Pan Wencheng's room door. The two looked at each other, their eyes lit up at the same time, and they happily went to Yan Jue's dormitory to chat.

After Yan Jue explained what had just happened, he asked Pan Wencheng about the situation of the expert group.

"When I woke up, I heard someone say you were communicating with Noel, so I didn't bother you. I didn't expect we'd run into each other."

Pan Wencheng changed the subject, suppressing a laugh as he said, "Everyone watching the livestream was just like us. As soon as they heard Noel reciting the poem, they all fainted without warning. The lab was completely covered in blood. In just one day, countless people were nearly frightened to death by this incident."

After the joke, he finally explained seriously, "Everyone who fainted has woken up and had a physical examination. They're all fine. We'll go out for another checkup tonight. Everyone woke up at different times. The fastest one was Lao Wen, who was only unconscious for five hours."

Yan Jue thought for a moment before remembering that the "Old Wen" Pan Wencheng was referring to was Wen Xuyang, who had not appeared since the first day he met him.

After learning that everyone was fine, he breathed a sigh of relief and said helplessly: "Who would have thought that the solution would be so easy."

"Yeah, it turns out the answer is both far away and right before our eyes." Pan Wencheng was also helpless: "But think about it, this seems to make sense."

"Mermaids are all born singers. Only a very small number can't sing. Who would spend their free time studying poetry and reciting it to other races? Even if they were art enthusiasts, they wouldn't notice their mutual immunity to power if they communicated with their own kind while studying in the sea."

"It seems that Noel and the others can't turn the fish tail into human legs?"

Yan Jue nodded: "Well, Noel said no."

At this point, he remembered what Noel had said, that mermaids' songs could bewitch all races except mermen. Yan Jue couldn't help but feel even more resentful about the game. If alien creatures could be brought to Earth alive, why not reduce the mermaids' powers before transferring them back?

Well, that's not right. If we cut them off, we won't be able to know whether reciting poetry is useful to Noel. It's really contradictory.

After hearing this, Pan Wencheng laughed and said, "You missed something. Noel also said that the mermaid's song is an offensive force that can absorb people's minds and make them unable to resist. We are just unconscious and there are no side effects. It must be the game, so it is not useless."

Even so, Yan Jue still really wanted to complain about this crappy game.

Really, what's wrong with having a customer service representative? It's fun to watch them come up with all sorts of guesses whenever something happens.

The two chatted again about the similarities between singing and poetry, and why they could break the common sense Noel had learned. Just as they were talking about the possibility that their favorability would be full after this, there was a sudden knock on the door.

The people outside were surprised: "Director Pan, Mr. Yan, the game has sent a notification saying it's going to be updated!"

After a period of chaos, Yan Jue saw the update instructions on the game homepage.
