Chapter 28. [First Update] "Then you can eat it..."

Wenxue's winter vacation was coming to an end. She zipped up her suitcase and lingered her gaze on every inconspicuous item in the cramped little house, feeling a pang of reluctance.

Without realizing it, she found herself feeling a sense of belonging here, as if it had become her second home.

She didn't know who would move into the house next. After thinking for a moment, she picked up a rag and broom to clean. All her suppressed emotions poured out when she stood in front of the floor lamp.

This is her lamp, and this is her sofa.

She thought uncontrollably.

This was an unreasonable idea, she silently warned herself, sniffing to suppress the unpleasant thoughts. There were many things she couldn't bring back to school, and for the next hour or so, she ran around busily.

Holding a foot bath tub, she knocked on Wu Yuejiang's door.

Wu Yuejiang was engrossed in reading a self-help book when he opened the door and was surprised to see her. "Little sister, did you knock on the wrong door?"

Wen Xue rarely visits the second floor.

Usually, when she comes down, it's only to find He Yan.

"No." Wen Xue smiled and handed him the heavy wooden bucket. "Brother Yuejiang, here you go. Didn't you say you had insomnia a few days ago? Soaking your feet should help. By the way," she carefully instructed, "when soaking your feet, make sure the hot water covers your ankles. That will make it more effective."

Wu Yuejiang paused, looked her over in the light of the room, and then suddenly realized, "Oh, you're going back to school tomorrow, right?"

Wen Xue smiled and nodded, "I can't take these with me either."

"OK--"

Just as he was about to take it, the sound of a door creaking open came from next door. The two looked over at the same time and saw He Yan leaning against the door with his arms crossed, quietly watching them.

"Thanks." Wu Yuejiang tucked the book under his arm and picked up the foot bath tub with both hands. "I'll try it tonight!"

He was very touched. This wasn't even his biological sister, yet she took his casual remark to heart.

Wen Xue's hands were empty, but she was still reluctant to part with them.

This foot bath tub was also bought for her by Wang Yuan at He Yan's request, but she doesn't have her own home in Xicheng, so it's a pity she can't take it with her.

He Yan watched coldly from the sidelines.

Wen Xue turned her head to meet his gaze, as if to explain, "Aren't you afraid of the cold?"

If he were afraid of the cold like everyone else, she would bring him all the heating equipment in her house.

Although he didn't quite understand her behavior, which seemed like she was dividing up her property, He Yan nodded indifferently.

After saying this, Wen Xue was in a hurry to deal with other things, so she turned around and ran away. After she left, the corridor returned to silence. Wu Yuejiang, holding the bucket, chuckled twice and proudly raised his chin at He Yan, "My sister cares about me. You know what, it feels really good."

He Yan glanced at him, straightened up, slammed the door shut, and went back into the room to continue copying the scriptures.

It was half an hour later when the knocking came.

He flexed his wrists and glanced at the time; it was 8:30.

Many people came to see him on weekdays, but they were all rough men who wouldn't knock, only shout. Only she was polite, and he became more or less curious about what share of the inheritance he would receive.

He lazily went to open the door, and the first thing he felt was her panting. He looked up and saw that she was breathing rapidly, holding a potted plant that he couldn't tell what it was. Their eyes met, and she said, "This... do you want it?"

Seemingly afraid he would refuse, she quickly promoted it, saying, "It will grow strawberries."

He Yan looked at her with a complicated expression, but finally gave in and took the strawberry plant. He had to search hard to find just one or two fruits. If she hadn't told him what it was, he wouldn't have recognized it as a strawberry.

"I've checked the information, and it should be fully healed in a little over a month," she said.

"Then what?"

"Then you can eat it."

He Yan was amused by her. After laughing, he whispered, "What do you mean?"

“I’ve cleaned the room,” Wen Xue replied gently. “Is the key for you or for Wang Yuan?”

He Yan finally understood why she was so busy, like a bee. He lowered his eyelids and looked at her fair face. After a few seconds, he looked away and said, "You don't need to give it to anyone. Keep it for yourself."

Wen Xue looked up hastily, "Huh?"

He Yan carried the potted plant in one hand, walked into the room, looked around, and placed it in a corner where he wouldn't kick it no matter how he walked by. He turned around and saw her still standing at the door. He sighed inwardly, then turned back and stood in front of her. "As long as I'm here, that room upstairs is yours."

From now on, wherever he is, he will always leave her a room whenever she needs one, so she won't be homeless.

She was still bewildered, as if she understood but couldn't quite believe it.

"Didn't understand?" He smiled and gestured for her to move aside. She quickly took a few steps back. He walked out, glanced at her, went straight to the next room, knocked on the door, and shouted, "Old Wu, come out here."

As soon as the door opened, Wu Yuejiang's tone was not very good, "Can't you see I'm studying?"

He Yan scoffed when he saw him holding a self-help book, "Hurry up and give me back my foot bath tub."

Wen Xue's eyes widened.

ah? ?

Wu Yuejiang was also stunned. He looked at He Yan, who was demanding payment, and then at Wen Xue, who was standing a few steps behind him with a bewildered expression. What else could he not understand? He held back for a while, but then he couldn't hold back any longer. "Sister, close your eyes first."

Wen Xue didn't understand what he meant, and still closed her eyes reflexively.

Wu Yuejiang smiled and gave He Yan the middle finger, saying, "Get lost."

A few minutes later, He Yan carried the foot bath tub upstairs. Wen Xue, as if she had done something wrong, walked slowly up the stairs, clinging to the railing. She whispered, "Could we not ask them to give the other things back?"

She had already given them all away, and then knocked on the door to ask them to return them.

How embarrassing.

He Yan was speechless. "Don't share your pots and pans anymore, understand?"

That way he won't have to buy a new one.

Wen Xue suppressed a laugh and nodded gently. She was overjoyed; the lamp was hers, the sofa was hers, and the room was still hers.

The day she returned to school happened to be a Sunday. When Li Jingru went out for a smoke that night, she overheard He Yan complaining to Wu Yuejiang that the university dormitories were really strict and that even he, as a parent, wasn't allowed in. She was puzzled as to whose parent Yan was. The next second, she heard Wu Yuejiang also worrying, saying that his sister was thin and frail and would be exhausted if she carried such a heavy suitcase up the stairs.

She remained silent for a while, flicking ash from her cigarette, lost in thought.

When Wen Xue, carrying her schoolbag, followed He Yan out of the building, she thought she was seeing things. In the sunlight, Nana and Li Jingru were standing by the jeep, chatting and laughing. Not only Wen Xue, but He Yan also looked surprised. "You two?"

“Let’s take Wenxue back to school,” Nana said, then tilted her head to look at Wenxue. “Jingjie said there’s a really popular milk tea shop that opened near Xida University, and we want to try it!”

He Yan looked them over and said, "Okay, whatever you want to eat or drink, it's on me."

"yeah!"

Wen Xue's eyes welled up with tears. She had always felt incredibly lucky. Although she had experienced many painful separations, she had met so many kind people: her aunts and uncles who cared about her, her best friends who looked after her, her roommates who always accommodated her and took care of her feelings, and everyone here who harbored good intentions.

She thought she should learn to live a good life.

"Get in the car."

He Yan opened the car door and stuffed all of Wen Xue's luggage into the car. The addition of Nana and the others had solved the problem that had been weighing on his mind.

He had too much stuff. His original plan was to say a few nice words to the dormitory supervisor after he got to the dormitory building. If that didn't work, he would have to pay a student in excellent physical condition to help him.

This time, Wen Xue didn't sit in the passenger seat; Nana pulled her to the back.

The three of them were all holding plush toys, chatting casually. The topic naturally revolved around their student days. Nana regretted not studying harder back then. She cupped her face and said, "Dating in college must have been wonderful, right? It felt so pure."

Li Jingru's lips twitched. "Stupid."

Wen Xue couldn't help but chuckle.

"Speaking of which, Wenxue, you must have a lot of people pursuing you, right?" Nana said enviously. "From childhood to adulthood, I've never had many suitors, and they're all ugly. It makes me so mad."

"fine."

Wen Xue felt that many boys' actions didn't count as pursuing someone.

They don't understand what liking someone means at all; they blindly follow the crowd. It's less about pursuing love and more about saving face.

"What type of boy does your sister like?" Li Jingru asked.

He Yan was focused on driving and had no interest in their conversation about love or anything like that, but he still looked up and glanced at Wen Xue in the back seat through the rearview mirror.

He knew that there was only one person in her heart: his younger brother, He Heng.

That's why he was even more worried that she would fall into loneliness again, just like she did that night at the karaoke bar when she rejected Wang Yuan.

"I don't know." Wen Xue was indeed a little down for a moment, but she didn't want to spoil the mood, so she deliberately blurred the figure in her mind, thought about it carefully, and replied seriously.

When He Heng was around, she only liked his type.

He's gone, and she doesn't know what kind of person she'll like in the future.

"Good girl."

Li Jingru chuckled, and seeing her answer the question so seriously, she couldn't resist pinching her cheek.

"I think Wenxue's future boyfriend definitely can't gamble," Nana said, suppressing a laugh. "Otherwise, he'll definitely be killed by Yan Ge's gaze."

"Hahahaha!" Li Jingru clapped her hands.

Wen Xue smiled too. It was only recently that she learned from He Yan why he so disliked other people playing cards.

He once worked as a truck driver under a master who loved to play cards with the other drivers. One day, the master was led to a gambling table, lost all his savings, and incurred a lot of debt. In the end, he was separated from his wife and children.

"Brother Yan, is it, is it?" Nana leaned forward and asked.

He Yan: "She wouldn't date that kind of person."

He paused, not wanting the two of them to continue on this topic, as it would remind Wen Xue of something unpleasant. "Alright, she's still a student, don't joke like that with her."

"I won't joke about her." Nana chuckled, leaning forward and gripping the passenger seat. "Then I'll joke about you, Yan-ge. Tell me, is there any chance between you and the head singer of Ai Chang? Could she become our sister-in-law?"

Wen Xue didn't expect Nana to ask He Yan this question directly.

Although she already knew the answer, she still secretly pricked up her ears to listen.

Just as they reached the intersection and were waiting for the green light, He Yan glanced at the rearview mirror again and his eyes met those of Wen Xue, who was holding her breath and waiting. He had a knowing look on his face as he recalled their conversation at the temple on the first day of the Lunar New Year.

His gaze was indifferent. He had clearly figured out who she had learned those unrelated things from.

Wen Xue lowered her head guiltily.

He Yan looked away. "If you ask another brain-dead question like that, I'll dock your pay."
