Chapter 22 That damn aunt dares to make her own decisions?
Du Ruoxia's aunt, Wang Xia, swaggered in carrying a telegram.
"Are you Du Ruoxia?"
Du Ruoxia sized up Wang Xia and asked, "Who are you?"
“I am your aunt.”
"You're the one who brought these people here to kidnap me?" Du Ruoxia frowned, wondering when this person had gotten involved with He Meiling.
"How can you call it kidnapping? Ruoxia, your aunt has arranged a good marriage for you. You're a girl, and you'll get married sooner or later anyway."
Wang Xia was initially unwilling to take the lead, but someone gave her an extra fifty yuan today, making it a full 150 yuan. She immediately called Du Dayong's home.
Originally, it was thought that the marriage proposal for Du Ruoxia would require some detours, but unexpectedly, the eldest brother of the Du family became furious as soon as he heard Du Ruoxia's name. When he mentioned that he wanted to marry Du Ruoxia to the Huang family, and that the Huang family was willing to offer a dowry of 100 yuan, the eldest brother of the Du family immediately agreed.
Du Ruoxia was so angry she almost laughed. "Who do you think you are, some kind of aunt? What does it matter to you whether I get married or not? We haven't even met before today. How dare you put on airs like an elder here?"
"Ruoxia, although we don't live together, your aunt always thinks about you," Wang Xia said hypocritically.
"If you really cared about me, why haven't you come to see me even once in the month I've been in Yuxi Village? Now you're suddenly saying you want to arrange a marriage for me, who do you think you are!" Du Ruoxia's eyes were filled with ruthlessness.
Wang Xia was so frightened that she couldn't help but take a step back, but thinking about the 150 yuan, she gritted her teeth and straightened her back again.
"If my opinion doesn't count, then what about what your parents say?"
Wang Xia took out the telegram. "This is a telegram from your family. It's an arranged marriage. Your parents said you should marry Huang Dazhu. I'm not making this up."
Du Ruoxia looked at the telegram, which was sent from Haishi. She felt somewhat incredulous. The Du family had driven her to the countryside, yet they still wouldn't let her go.
Yang Zeyan looked at the astonished Du Ruoxia, gently touched the wound on her forehead, and then placed his hand on her shoulder.
"Go eat something first, don't go hungry." His voice was gentle, giving the impression that the two were in that kind of relationship.
Du Ruoxia also felt that the world was vast, but her belly was the biggest obstacle, so she obediently went inside.
Wang Xia became agitated upon seeing the man. "Where did you come from, you wild man? Ruoxia is already engaged. You'd better get lost."
Yang Zeyan ignored him.
A loud sound rang out—
"What are you doing?!"
The people on the ground instantly felt like they had found a pillar of support, and they all crawled over to start complaining.
"Village chief, you've finally arrived! This man... he assaulted someone!"
"Waaaa, I've been beaten to a pulp! You have to do justice for me!"
Du Ruoxia couldn't bear to look at him. A scoundrel is a scoundrel; his shamelessness is something no ordinary person could have.
"Did he do this all by himself?" Village chief Jiang Guoqiang asked uncertainly as he helped the man up, his attitude towards Huang Dazhu unusual.
Jiang Guoqiang wanted to call Du Ruoxia, but was stopped by a cold look from Yang Zeyan.
The man's military uniform was covered in dust, but his face was righteous and awe-inspiring, and Jiang Guoqiang unconsciously felt a desire to obey him.
Yang Zeyan calmly drank the soup in his hand, while the person lying on the ground outside had already been helped up.
"Who are you? Someone reported you for assaulting someone. We need you to come with us to the police station!" Jiang Guoqiang glared menacingly at the man.
"Yang Zeyan, it just so happens that I was also thinking of inviting you to the police station."
Du Ruoxia finished eating quickly and came out when she heard Yang Zeyan's words. She was so shocked that her jaw almost dropped. Are all soldiers this arrogant?
"I don't care what kind of officer you are, don't think that just because you're wearing a military uniform you can act with impunity!" Jiang Guoqiang shouted.
“Village chief, his name is Yang Zeyan. Didn’t he just say so?” Du Ruoxia interrupted Jiang Guoqiang.
Jiang Guoqiang glared at Du Ruoxia and was about to start cursing at her.
“You, an educated youth, insisted on begging the brigade leader to make you a room, which was already against the rules. Now you’re even hiding a man in the room. You’re shameless.”
At this moment, Jiang Dezhu arrived and said, "Who doesn't know shame?"
"Jiang Guoqiang, I gave Du Ruoxia this house, so what? Do you have a problem with it?"
Jiang Guoqiang and Jiang Dezhu held similar positions but were in different areas of responsibility. Upon hearing the captain's words, he could only hurriedly say that he dared not.
"Du Ruoxia is the first doctor in Yuxi Village. Everyone should learn from her, instead of spreading rumors like you."
He Meiling, however, spoke slowly and deliberately in the crowd: "Du Zhiqing has been taking the exam for a month now, how come she still hasn't passed? For so long, she's been eating, drinking, having fun, and supporting men at home every day, and she never goes to work at the county hospital. We all have high suspicions about her."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Guoqiang also said, "Yes, Captain, there's no guarantee that Du Ruoxia will become a doctor. Who knows if the girl is just making it up? These educated youths, relying on their education, like to use empty talk and clichés to avoid labor."
“Okay, let’s put aside Du Zhiqing’s job problem for now. What does Huang Dazhu want with these three people coming to Du Zhiqing’s doorstep?” Jiang Dezhu asked.
“Brother Zhu, Huang Dazhu and Du Ruoxia have the consent of both sets of parents to get married. Her parents have agreed, so there is naturally no problem with the marriage. But when he came to propose, he was beaten up like this by the man that Du Ruoxia was hiding.” Jiang Guoqiang was biased towards Huang Dazhu.
"Let's go to the station first. There must be some misunderstanding in this matter," Jiang Dezhu could only say.
The group walked out of the village in a grand procession. Du Ruoxia walked next to Yang Zeyan. She didn't know how to get rid of Yang Zeyan for a moment, but she was sure that Huang Dazhu and the others couldn't do anything to her today.
"Yang Zeyan, when we get there, you must say that I ordered it!" Du Ruoxia earnestly instructed the man beside her.
The man, who had been walking with his eyes straight ahead, lowered his gaze and looked over after hearing Du Ruoxia's words.
"Zeyan, or Brother Yan, just call me," the man said sparingly.
Having lived two lives, Du Ruoxia was no longer young at heart. Although the man was older than the original owner of this body, she felt strange calling him "brother."
"Zeyan, it doesn't matter that I don't have a job. Don't let it affect your punishment. If things get bad, just blame it on me. I don't care!" Du Ruoxia repeated.
Yang Zeyan suddenly stopped. He looked at Du Ruoxia with a calm expression, the smile gone from his eyes.
Du Ruoxia didn't know what she had said again, and she stopped and looked at Yang Zeyan in a daze.
"What's the problem?" Du Ruoxia asked, puzzled.
"Do I look weak?" The man's tone sounded somewhat displeased.
Du Ruoxia immediately felt embarrassed upon hearing this; men are probably most sensitive about being told they are impotent.
"That's not what I meant. I'm just worried that you'll get punished and it will affect your future," Du Ruoxia whispered to Yang Zeyan.
Yang Zeyan's expression improved upon hearing this, and a smile slowly appeared on his face.
