Chapter 49: Stopping After a Brief Discussion

Chapter 49: Stopping After a Brief Discussion

Surprisingly, throughout the entire journey, Old Hu's wife didn't cause any more trouble.

When they arrived at the market, everyone got off the bus except for Du Ruoxia.

"Miss, this is the market, why aren't you getting off?" The driver turned to look at Du Ruoxia.

Du Ruoxia shook her head, "I'm not going to buy groceries, I'm going to the library."

Old Hu's wife walked behind and glared at Du Ruoxia. Du Ruoxia returned her a cheerful smile and nodded her thanks, "Thank you, brother. I wouldn't have been able to get on the bus without your help!"

When Du Ruoxia arrived at the library, she didn't have an employee card and couldn't just enter the work area, so she chatted with the old man guarding the door for a few minutes.

"Young girls these days are so lucky; the country provides them with an education!"

Du Ruoxia listened attentively to the old man's ramblings and gleaned a lot of useful information from them.

For example, the curator comes 3 days a week, each time for half a day, and the rest of the time he is either on a business trip or in a meeting.

"Director Xin is just too busy; his wife has complained about him several times!" the old man sighed.

Du Ruoxia learned from the old man that the curator was an honest and upright person, but he didn't care much about the affairs of his subordinates, so he naturally didn't know about Song Hongjiao's job being taken away.

When the curator arrived, the gate had just opened, and Du Ruoxia, following the old man's instructions, immediately went forward to stop the car.

Director Xin's bicycle was a bit old, and his briefcase hanging on the handlebars fell to the ground. Du Ruoxia apologetically picked it up for him.

"Hello, Director Xin, I'm here to help you solve your problems!" Du Ruoxia said directly without beating around the bush.

Director Xin originally intended to nod and go in, but upon hearing that someone was there to help him solve his problems, he became interested.

"What can you do for me? I'd like to hear it." He looked at Du Ruoxia with great interest.

Seeing that there weren't many people around and she didn't see anyone suspicious, Du Ruoxia decided to speak frankly.

"I can help you translate all those documents."

Du Ruoxia's English is excellent. In her previous life, she published many SCI papers and could understand almost all English-language literature without needing to translate them.

Director Xin's eyes lit up instantly, and she began to scrutinize Du Ruoxia's face, trying to discern something from it.

He thought for a few seconds, then put on airs and said, "We already have people who can handle those simple things, we don't need them!"

Du Ruoxia thought to herself, "Just as I thought, there are no senior translators in the museum."

"I'm not talking about those ordinary documents, I'm talking about the pile of documents you have on your hands," Du Ruoxia said patiently and earnestly.

Director Xin's gaze finally changed; he was shocked, yet also as if he had discovered a new continent.

"Are you telling the truth? Can you really translate those documents?" Curator Xin asked uncertainly.

Du Ruoxia smiled and said, "Whether it's possible or not, we'll know after a test."

Director Xin took a deep breath. "Alright, come to my office!"

Du Ruoxia followed Director Xin inside, while the old man behind her looked pleased.

Director Xin handed Du Ruoxia several documents, which looked to be tens of thousands of words long. Du Ruoxia smiled helplessly; he was afraid she would cheat, so he gave her several documents to translate!

"Choose three of these to translate, and give them to me when they're done."

Director Xin handed the materials to Du Ruoxia and began to examine her. He was curious when he saw her casually pick up three documents, as some of the materials he had given her were quite difficult!

Du Ruoxia sat down directly. Seeing her serious attitude, Director Xin lent her his pen and finally realized that Du Ruoxia was not just saying it.

All morning, Du Ruoxia was so engrossed in translating that she completely forgot she was hungry.

She didn't look up until the aroma of a meal wafted over.

"It's lunchtime, consider it payment for your translation!" Director Xin said to Du Ruoxia with a smile.

He read Du Ruoxia's translation; it was quite good.

Du Ruoxia sighed inwardly. This curator is not fair. According to the market price of at least six yuan per thousand words, she would get sixty yuan for ten thousand words!

Du Ruoxia looked at Director Xin as if she were a human trafficker, and Director Xin, unable to bring himself to do it, coughed.

"As you know, it's difficult for me to apply for the fees for you since your results weren't submitted." Director Xin looked at Du Ruoxia apologetically.

Du Ruoxia lowered her eyes and tugged at the corners of her mouth, "Two more pages, it'll be done in a bit."

Director Xin's eyes lit up even more upon hearing this, and he looked at Du Ruoxia with admiration, "Little girl, how old are you? Which school did you graduate from?"

Du Ruoxia didn't even look up. "High school graduate."

Director Xin was quite shocked. "You're just a high school student? Your translation skills are quite good. Who taught you English?"

Du Ruoxia finally raised her head, her gaze towards Director Xin turning mocking. "Director Xin, heroes don't ask about their origins, understand?"

Du Ruoxia's words did not deter Director Xin. Seeing how quickly she translated, Director Xin became even more curious about her background.

Du Ruoxia finished the remaining two pages in less than half an hour. Director Xin, holding the translated document, exclaimed, "It's really good to have knowledge!"

He glanced at it, pointed to the words on the paper, and asked, "Why was this crossed out and rewritten?"

Du Ruoxia's eyes flickered, then she said nonchalantly, "That's how free manuscripts are. If it's not well-written, I'll rewrite it. Consider it practice."

"There's no payment for the manuscript either, so it's not considered unqualified, is it?" Du Ruoxia looked at Director Xin with wide eyes.

Director Xin was speechless; he couldn't find a way to refute it.

Actually, Du Ruoxia did make some corrections to the parts she crossed out, but Director Xin just didn't look closely.

In the 1970s, fountain pens were the standard writing instruments, which she found very unfamiliar and made many mistakes.

After finishing her meal, Du Ruoxia had no intention of leaving.

"Go back and wait. I'll let you know the results within a week. Please leave your contact information," Director Xin explained to Du Ruoxia.

Du Ruoxia sat down opposite him. "I have other things to do."

Director Xin put down his pen and looked over. "Oh? What is it?"

"How is Song Hongjiao's translation ability at your museum?" Du Ruoxia asked Director Xin calmly.

“Song Hongjiao? She can only translate ordinary materials; her ability is passable,” Director Xin affirmed. He noted that his museum focuses on foreign language translation.

"Then who else do you have to act as a translator?" Du Ruoxia continued to ask.

"Sigh, don't even mention it, there's not a single one, the documents are all piled up in a heap." Director Xin sighed deeply.

Du Ruoxia's eyes flickered slightly as she looked at Director Xin with feigned surprise. "Wait a minute, Song Hongjiao has been on leave for half a month. Who's going to do the work?"

Director Xin frowned, not understanding what Du Ruoxia meant.

"Song Hongjiao submitted her translation materials yesterday, and I even gave her a bonus to encourage her to keep up the good work. With so many materials to complete, why would she take a vacation?"

Du Ruoxia said no more. Director Xin would investigate the rest himself. She stopped there and prepared to leave.

Director Xin looked puzzled. He had someone send away the materials that Du Ruoxia had translated, and then went to inspect his office.

When Du Ruoxia came out of Director Xin's office, she ran into Zhou Mengrou, who was about to come over and yell at Du Ruoxia.

After walking a few steps, she stopped again when she saw Du Ruoxia coming out of the curator's office.

"Hi, long time no see!" Du Ruoxia greeted her with a smile.

Zhou Mengrou gritted her teeth, glared at Du Ruoxia, and left. Du Ruoxia had achieved her goal and walked out of the library in high spirits.
