The residents who were dragged away quickly knelt in a row in front of Uncle Yin's stilted house. A total of more than twenty people were taken away, including men, women, and children.
Their hands were tied behind their backs, and most of them were pulled out of bed, so their clothes were disheveled and their hair was messy.
Once they arrived here, these were all minor matters. They were filled with trepidation, unsure of what fate awaited them.
The stilted house was brightly lit. Uncle Yin was drinking tea, but his expression was not good. Opposite him was another warlord, Military Governor Zaga.
"Uncle, you're overthinking it. Even if you could find jadeite ore on Miss Shui's mountain, it wouldn't be worth much. I heard you're always keeping an eye on that place, which is exhausting. I think it's unnecessary."
Military Governor Zaga yawned without any attempt to hide his disinterest; he felt it was a waste of time to have been summoned for something like this.
"The fact that only a small number of people from the Jiang and Lu families came is different from their usual practice. I guess that girl informed them in advance that she had good stones, so they came to investigate. After arriving and verifying that it was true, they immediately transported all the good stones away."
Uncle Yin spent a whole day guessing and figured out the whole story.
Military Governor Zaga frowned for a moment, then suddenly smiled and gave Uncle In a thumbs up.
"Uncle Yin, you are the most vigilant and insightful among the warlords. I think your guess makes sense."
"But often, things aren't as complicated as you think. Maybe they're busy going back, or maybe the stones at the Water Girl's place are cheap, even if they're not good, they're just bought to make up the numbers."
"If that's the case, then that would be perfect," Uncle Yin snorted.
Military Governor Zaga glanced outside and saw the villagers kneeling on the ground, filled with fear and unease.
"You dragged them out of their sleep just for these speculations? That's a bit much."
"They're just insects, nothing to worry about." A sinister look appeared in Uncle Yin's eyes. He slapped his thigh and stood up abruptly.
"If you can't get it from that brat, get it from them."
He walked out of the stilt house, with Military Governor Zaga following beside him, looking utterly bored.
Apart from Uncle Yin keeping a close eye on the situation, these warlords and wealthy merchants stopped paying attention to the place after determining that Miss Shui's mine had no value.
Uncle stood before the villagers, a gentle expression on his face, and bowed slightly.
"If you tell me honestly whether there are any good stones hidden on the mountain of the Water Maiden, I will let you go back."
The villagers looked at each other, realizing that Uncle Yin was still worried about Shui Girl.
Today, Danso was arrested, severely beaten, and after failing to obtain any useful information, he went to them.
Over the years, they have suffered greatly from the oppression and harassment of warlords. Now that they finally have a better life, Uncle Yin is going to make things difficult for them again.
So they exchanged a glance, and could say nothing. They couldn't keep their relationship with the Water Maiden, and their hopes for a bright future vanished.
“We’re just doing the work, we don’t know anything,” said a man in his fifties.
Before he could finish speaking, a soldier walked over and mercilessly plunged his longsword into his heart from behind.
Seeing that he was lying on the ground convulsing and spasming, and would not die immediately, another soldier slit his throat.
The uncle stared wide-eyed, dying with his eyes wide open.
Witnessing this scene, the residents turned pale, and some of the more timid ones even fainted on the spot.
