Shen Jingxiu was awakened by a series of clanging and banging sounds.
Actually, the sound wasn't very loud, but he's been a light sleeper these past few days, so he wakes up at the slightest noise.
He reached for his phone on the bedside table and saw that it was only a little past five in the morning.
At five o'clock in the winter, it's still dark outside, so it's very unusual for the house to make such noises at that time.
He got up and went downstairs, following the sound to the kitchen.
Before he even reached the door, he saw a slender figure busily working.
Clearly, that figure did not belong to Aunt Zhang, nor to any of the servants in the house.
It belongs to Wen Yan!
But why would she get up so early to cook in the kitchen?
Feeling puzzled, Shen Jingxiu quickened his pace.
"Wen Yan, what are you doing here?"
When Shen Jingxiu walked up behind Wen Yan, Wen Yan was intently cutting tomatoes.
Suddenly hearing a sound from above, she was so startled she almost dropped the knife.
"Big brother!" Wen Yan turned around abruptly. "You scared me to death! How come you walk without making a sound?"
Shen Jingxiu gestured with his chin toward the range hood beside him: "I do make noise when I walk, but the range hood is too loud. I was going to ask you the same thing, it's still so early, why are you up and cooking for yourself?"
She had clearly been in the kitchen for a while, with sliced beef and green peppers laid out beside her.
"It doesn't look like you made breakfast. Why? There's nothing cooking on the stove, so why is the range hood on?"
"Um..." This made Wen Yan feel a little embarrassed. "Don't laugh at me. I've really never used the kitchen at home. This stove is so smart. I think I just waved my hand, and it sensed something and the range hood started working. I wanted to turn it off, but I tried and it didn't seem to work. Can you help me? You seem to know a lot about this."
"..." Shen Jingxiu narrowed his eyes. "Then move aside, I'll take a look."
"Okay, I'll go chop some vegetables over there. Luckily, our kitchen is big enough."
Shen Jingxiu grunted in agreement and began to examine the range hood.
Wen Yan also answered the question he had just raised.
"What I'm making now isn't breakfast, it's just a few home-cooked dishes that my biological mother liked to eat when she was alive."
"Oh?" Shen Jingxiu looked at Wen Yan in surprise. "Didn't Aunt Wen pass away when you were very young? You shouldn't have any memory of that time, right? How would you know what she liked to eat?"
Wen Yan subtly teased, "How about... you guess?"
Shen Jingxiu frowned slightly, and after thinking for a moment, he felt that he had guessed the answer.
"You went to see Xu Jie, you asked him, didn't you?"
"Perfect score!" Wen Yan glanced at Shen Jingxiu with a grin. "As expected of someone who can be the eldest brother, you guessed it right away."
Just then, Shen Jingxiu found the range hood switch and turned it off, and the kitchen immediately became quiet.
"So, you've already made your choice, right?"
The surroundings suddenly became quiet, which Wen Yan found somewhat unsettling, making the topic seem rather heavy.
However, she was in a lighthearted mood.
"Yes, I already know what to do, and now I'm not conflicted at all."
"Can you tell me about it?"
"Hmm... but it's hard to say right now, because I need to see Xu Jie before I can have a final result. I'll tell you when I get back, okay?"
"You even arranged to meet him?"
Shen Jingxiu asked, glancing at the dishes in Wen Yan's hand, "So these were also made for him?"
“NO,” Wen Yan frowned dramatically at Chen Jingxiu, “Didn’t I just say it was for my mom? But I did arrange to meet him at the cemetery. I made a few of my mom’s favorite dishes so I could visit her.”
However, upon hearing this, Shen Jingxiu frowned even more deeply.
"So early, you arranged to meet him at the cemetery?"
Wen Yan nodded: "Because he was already there a long time ago, probably arrived last night. I only realized it when I called him."
"So what made you suddenly decide to call him? Was it because of the files you saw at the Municipal Bureau and what Director Wang said?"
"Yes, but not entirely. I dreamt about my mother last night, so I called her after I woke up."
"So what did you dream about?" Actually, Shen Jingxiu wasn't the type of person who liked to pry into things.
But since it concerned Wen Yan, he couldn't help but ask her for a clear answer.
Wen Yan had no intention of hiding anything from Shen Jingxiu.
However, she knew it was still early.
Then he asked, "But aren't you sleepy, brother? It's still early. Are you sure you don't want to sleep a little longer? By the way, you must have been woken up by me, right? I just knocked over a basin. The loud noise startled even myself."
"No, I haven't fully adjusted to the time difference yet, so I'm a light sleeper."
Wen Yan nodded: "I see. Since you're not sleeping, you can chat with me. Let me tell you about my dream last night."
"Tell me, is there anything I can do to help you?"
"Hmm...yes, then please fill that clay pot with some water and boil a few tea eggs for me."
"good."
"Here's an apron. We'll be pouring soy sauce on you while you're boiling tea eggs, so be careful not to spill it on yourself."
