Chapter Two: Mingyuan

"Eighty-five percent, ninety percent... My God, host, I'm so excited, I can't believe it!"

The progress bar wobbled and eventually stopped at around 95%.

Ye Nianzhen was truly sweating bullets.

She didn't want to win over a living, breathing person so inexplicably.

Comrade Mingyuan, you've won over people's favor way too easily, haven't you?

Even a dog wouldn't trust a stranger so unconditionally.

Wait...maybe?

Ye Nianzhen apologized to the dog, saying that dogs are man's best friend.

Ye Nianzhen glanced at Mingyuan, who had fallen into a deep sleep again, with a complicated expression, and then temporarily left the tent.

The system is still the same system, all talk and no action.

"Host, I don't know why, but I feel a special familiarity with you, like we've known each other for lifetimes!"

Yeh Nien-jen: That's right.

"And I think you're incredibly capable. If we join forces, we'll definitely be able to easily conquer this small world!"

Ye Nianzhen, who has experienced several failures and retained all her memories: Hehe.

Just then, as Ye Nianzhen walked to the medical tent, she was stopped again by the man at the door.

"Hey, you there."

Ye Nianzhen stopped, then belatedly realized that there was blood on her face. She quickly wiped it off with her sleeve before walking over.

The man noticed her movements and looked at her suspiciously.

But it was dark and he couldn't see clearly, so he didn't ask any further questions.

"You're from the loot sorting department, right? They told me there's a mutated animal carcass that needs to be decomposed, and they want you to go over there quickly."

Ye Nianzhen agreed, but in her heart she didn't think so.

It's so late, and we haven't heard of any exploration team returning. How could there possibly be any spoils?

It's probably just someone who's tired of living and looking for trouble.

*

Ye Nianzhen took off the cumbersome protective suit, handed it back to the man, and slowly walked towards the entrance of the base.

There was an open space there, which was usually used for training soldiers, and where spoils of war were also sorted after they were brought back.

The open space was deserted, with only the cold light of the stars and moon casting Ye Nianzhen's thin shadow on the ground.

Ye Nianzhen had no weapons on her, only a sketchbook and an ordinary pencil tucked into her waistband.

A very slight rustling sound came from the ground, and the dust vibrated slightly.

Ye Nianzhen pretended not to see it and walked towards the food warehouse.

The creature lurking underground was secretly delighted upon seeing this.

He never expected this stupid woman to be so easy to fool, which saved him the trouble of dealing with her.

He moved nimbly underground, like a groundhog, following behind Ye Nianzhen.

Upon entering the food storage tent, a strong smell of raw meat mixed with stale grains wafted towards her nose, and Ye Nianzhen gently fanned it in front of her nose.

"I'm sorry to trouble you..."

She muttered something to herself out of the blue and then closed the tent door.

In the dimly lit tent, moonlight peeked in through tiny gaps, and dust motes danced in the beams of light.

One, two... five figures emerged from behind the cargo.

The ground behind them suddenly cracked open, and a groundhog emerged from the ground.

Ye Nianzhen looked at them calmly.

It seems they've found help again; they never learn their lesson—a bunch of useless people together are still just a bunch of useless people.

The person on the other side made the classic thug's remark first.

"Are you scared? Being scared won't help! There's no one else here, and no matter how loudly you scream, no one will come to save you!"

"Weren't you so arrogant during the day? Come on, try again! Who do you think you can beat with that little stick now?"

Ye Nianzhen is indeed not good at dealing with one or many opponents.

During the day, she easily won by overwhelming her opponent with her momentum.

The groundhog behind him is probably an earth-type ability user, with physical abilities stronger than ordinary people. Ye Nianzhen would probably be no match for it in close combat.

But they will find helpers, and Ye Nianzhen will certainly do the same.

She seemed amused by one of their remarks, and lowered her head with a soft sneer.

"I'm so scared when there's no one else around."

"I'm afraid you'll die too tragically...and no one will collect your bodies!"

A beastly growl echoed from the void, its imposing power and protective intent palpable.

Two eerie blue lights flashed in the darkness, and before the thugs could react, they were all tackled to the ground in an instant.

The occasional glint of black fur in the moonlight was like glimpsing a corner of a beast's massive body through a tube.

The steel-sharp fangs touched the neck of a scoundrel.

"Alright, stop getting your mouth dirty."

Ye Nianzhen called a halt in time, and the beast turned its attention to Ye Nianzhen, pouncing on her and whimpering like a spoiled child.

Ye Nianzhen was hit in the face with hot steam, and the moist nose and furry touch came over her head.

Familiar, unreserved trust and intimacy.

After waking up, Ye Nianzhen finally felt grounded after half a day.

"Alright, alright, the air here isn't good, you should go back now."

The beast whimpered in dissatisfaction, but obeyed, and vanished like smoke.

The smoke lingered around Ye Nianzhen's waist for a moment before suddenly disappearing into her sketchbook.

Ye Nianzhen wiped away non-existent drool from her cheek and looked at the person lying on the ground.

Hmm... what should we do with these things?

*

Inside the "dead man's bag".

Mingyuan lay on the "luxury bed" that Ye Nianzhen had prepared for him, having just survived a high fever.

He felt a cool hand gently patting his cheek, and he groggily opened his eyes.

As expected, the person who came was the casually dressed savior.

His savior mysteriously made a "shh" gesture to him, indicating that he should look at the ground.

Mingyuan turned his head and was so shocked that he almost missed taking a picture.

Several ragged men of varying heights and builds were tied up and carelessly left on the ground.

They were in a miserable state, and all of them had fainted, their condition unknown.

Facing Mingyuan's terrified gaze, Ye Nianzhen calmly said, "These few are no good. I just taught them a lesson."

"Let them be thrown into the mass grave with the corpses, and then let them fend for themselves."

Mingyuan then took a few more glances at those people.

As luck would have it, the person who orchestrated his deployment to the battlefield and the person who pushed him to shield him from the zombies were both on the list.

It's truly a cycle of karma.

So he readily agreed, "aiding and abetting the wicked."

Seeing this, Ye Nianzhen nodded in satisfaction.

Those who are to become the backbone of her team in the future must have this kind of decisive and ruthless spirit!
