Lu Feng, who was outside the door, heard the mother and daughter's conversation. He had originally planned to discuss with his mother that if Lin Wanwan really didn't agree to the engagement, then they would just give up.
I owed the Lin family a favor, and I would repay it later. But today, when they came to break off the engagement, I overheard Aunt He and Lin Wanwan's conversation. Didn't they say they didn't want to marry me? Why are they saying they want to get married right away?
"Aunt He, are you home?" Lu Feng knocked gently on the door. "I saw the front door was open, and after knocking for a while without anyone answering, I came in by myself."
He Yumei quickly got up to greet him, "Lu Feng, why are you here now? Come in quickly." She opened the door and saw Lu Feng standing outside.
Lin Wanwan looked at him first. He was wearing a crisp white shirt with the sleeves neatly rolled up to his forearms, loose jeans, and a pair of high-top white sneakers from Warrior.
Carrying things in his hands—canned fruit—Lu Feng was really handsome; he had served in the military and had a tall, upright figure.
The Lu family is truly well-off. Lu Feng's grandfather, Lu Zhenguo, once funded the Red Army, sending a lot of medicine, food, and cotton clothing to the front lines, and donating most of his family fortune to the front.
Lu Feng's father, Lu Hailin, was one of the earliest capitalists who studied abroad. His family business expanded overseas, and they were very wealthy.
Because Grandpa donated most of the family property back then, during the Cultural Revolution, although the Lu family was not labeled as rightists, their property was confiscated and they were sent to a farm in the Northwest.
At that time, Lu Feng's elder brother, Lu Anyang, had not returned to China with his father because the family's overseas business required constant attention, thus escaping the disaster.
Lu Feng happened to join the army during the Great Movement. Back then, he had secretly planned to join the army without telling his parents, which can be considered as escaping a disaster.
Lu's parents were not so lucky. Although they were not labeled as rightists because of Lu's grandfather, the harsh conditions in the Northwest caused Lu's father to fall seriously ill. The harsh conditions in the Northwest meant that he was ill for several years.
Lin's parents secretly sent him things and medicine, but Lin's father couldn't hold on and passed away in the third year of his exile.
“What is this child looking at? Go get some water,” He Yumei interrupted Lin Wanwan’s gaze and directed her to get some water.
Lin Wanwan brewed two cups of tea, one for Lu Feng and one for her mother.
Lu Feng took a sip of tea before speaking, "Auntie, I've come to see Wanmei. I heard she's sick, so I brought some canned food and fruit," he said, handing the items to He Yumei.
He Yumei quickly accepted it, saying, "Why are you being so polite, child? It's enough that you came to see me. Don't bring anything next time."
He Yumei genuinely liked Lu Feng, believing that he not only had a promising future but also knew how to conduct himself appropriately, not to mention the property the state had returned to the Lu family.
Lin Wanwan felt she couldn't just sit idly by and wait for her fate. She didn't need to take the initiative; she couldn't let Lu Feng annul the engagement. "Lu Feng, right?" Lin Wanwan tilted her head to look at him.
Lu Feng looked at her, puzzled. Lin Wanwan stood up and said to him, "Can we talk alone?"
Lu Feng didn't know what she wanted to do, but he was very puzzled. In the past, Lin Wanwan would not give him a kind look, let alone say a word.
A few days ago, she was said to have attempted suicide at home, and the whole alley was buzzing with the news. Just now, I heard her say she wanted to get married, and now she says she wants to talk. Lu Feng didn't know what she was up to, so he just stared at her face for a while.
He Yumei tugged at her daughter, giving her a warning look to stop causing trouble. Lin Wanwan pretended not to see it and said to Lu Feng, "Can't we even have a chat? If we're going to get married, shouldn't we clarify some things?"
Lu Feng glanced at her, nodded, and said, "Okay, where shall we talk?"
Lu Feng stood up and apologized to He Yumei, "Aunt He, I'll come see you again next time." He then turned to look at Lin Wanwan.
Lin Wanwan led him out and asked, "Shall we talk in my room?"
Lu Feng raised an eyebrow. "Either is fine." Once inside the room, Lin Wanwan pointed to a stool. "Sit down."
Lu Feng glanced at her, then sat down without saying a word. He didn't know what Lin Wanwan was up to, but he wasn't someone to be easily manipulated, and he wasn't afraid of any tricks she might use.
After looking at Lu Feng for a while, Lin Wanwan finally spoke, "We're supposed to get engaged next Monday, right? There are still five days left, let's not get engaged."
Lu Feng didn't speak or ask anything, waiting for Lin Wanwan to say, "I want to get married right away, let's skip the engagement."
Lu Feng stared at her for a long time with a half-smile on his face before slowly saying, "You want to get married? Didn't you say you weren't willing before? That's why my family suggested getting engaged first."
Lin Wanwan wasn't angry when he said that. Anyway, it wasn't her doing it, so it wouldn't embarrass her. "Now that you want to get married, Lu Feng, let's be frank. I really didn't want to marry you before. You're very outstanding. You're an excellent soldier. You also have a great family. You even have a lovely son and a fairly open-minded mother."
When Lu Feng heard her say that her mother was quite open-minded, his brow twitched but he didn't say anything. Lin Wanwan ignored his expression and continued, "I know that no matter how you look at it, you're the one who's at a disadvantage and I'm the one who's getting the better deal by marrying you. But I'll have a son who's only a few months old when I marry you. Can't you understand me? I'm only 18 years old. It's only natural that I don't want to be a stepmother. If I really didn't mind at all from the beginning, then I would be the one with ulterior motives and deep scheming."
Lu Feng spoke up at the opportune moment, "So why did you agree now? Are you starting to have designs on me?"
Lin Wanwan couldn't help but laugh. "I guess so. You're very outstanding. Even if I work hard for ten years, I might not be able to find a man more outstanding than you. Your family is well-off. Even if I become a stepmother, I won't be raising the child on my own. Although your mother isn't exactly open-minded, at least she won't make things too difficult for me because of my parents. We agreed to be honest, so does this count as being honest?" Lin Wanwan turned to look at him after she finished speaking.
