Chapter 141 The Secret Underground
Qiao Suisui and Carl set foot on the southern battlefield, the air thick with the scent of gunpowder. They walked along the dilapidated road, surrounded by shattered buildings and abandoned vehicles, creating a particularly desolate scene. If Qiao Suisui hadn't learned something from the Archbishop beforehand, she would have thought she had entered a quiet, deserted city surrounded by the dead.
"This is the village of Dadligne," Carl whispered. "What are you looking for?"
"I want to know why the Federation is willing to destroy this place at all costs."
Qiao Suisui carefully observed the surrounding environment and noticed a relatively intact piece of ground next to a collapsed building.
"The rest of the ground has depressions and cracks, why is there no such thing?"
She walked forward, squatted down, and gently brushed away the dust on the ground with her hand, revealing some strange scratches.
"Carl, look here." Qiao Susu pointed at the scratch and a hint of doubt flashed in her eyes.
Carl came over and examined the scratches carefully. "These scratches look like some kind of marking."
Qiao Suisui nodded and continued searching for clues along the scratches. Suddenly, her fingers touched a loose tile. She lifted it with force, revealing a narrow crack beneath it.
"There's a gap here." Qiao Susu said excitedly, her fingers continuing to grope along the gap.
Carl squatted down and helped her lift more floor tiles. As the tiles were peeled off, a hidden passage gradually emerged. The entrance to the passage was sealed by a heavy iron door, but the lock on the iron door was rusted, and it was obvious that no one had opened it in a long time.
"This is the entrance to the underground." Carl frowned, his expression rare and serious.
The two looked at each other, and Karl asked, "Do we really have to care?"
Qiao Sui Sui brought out the four-character mantra: "Since I'm here, I'm here."
Carl resigned himself to his fate and pushed open the iron door. Immediately, a harsh friction sound was heard. Behind the door was a dim staircase leading deep into the underground.
The two walked up the stairs. The air was filled with a decaying smell, as if countless pairs of invisible eyes were watching them. The walls were covered with thick dust and cobwebs, and the ground was littered with broken experimental equipment, giving it a particularly eerie look.
"This looks like some kind of underground facility." Qiao Suisui whispered, sweeping the beam stick in her hand through the darkness, illuminating the road ahead.
At the end of the passage was a heavy metal door, covered in rust and strange symbols. Carl pushed the door open with force, making a dull sound. Behind the door was a dark space.
They walked into the space, and the light from the beam rods moved around in the darkness, illuminating the surrounding scene. Soon, everything they saw shocked them.
It was a vast underground space, crisscrossed with intricate pipes and equipment. Faded signs adorned the walls, broken glass bottles and chemicals littered the ground, and a pungent odor hung in the air. Although long abandoned, the place still evoked its former glory.
"What kind of experiments have been conducted here?" Qiao Suisui frowned and looked around. Karl held her hand to prevent her from wandering around.
The beam in his hand shone on a huge experimental instrument, which was covered with dried blood and rust, looking particularly terrifying. Carl walked forward and carefully examined the nameplate on the instrument.
"It looks like some kind of biological experiment." Carl kicked a damaged instrument, sending dust flying. "Could it be some shady hospital involved in organ trafficking?"
The two continued their investigation and discovered some abandoned documents and samples. The documents were covered in blood and stains, and some pages had been torn, but from some remaining records, Qiao Sui Sui was horrified to discover that cruel live experiments had been conducted here, and the subjects were most likely orcs.
The first page of the report contained a photograph of an orc strapped to an operating table, its eyes filled with fear and pain. The text next to it recorded the start time of the experiment and the basic information of the subject.
[Subject No.: A-101]
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Race: Pelican Orc
【Purpose】
By injecting modified genetic drugs and observing the reaction of the orcs' genes to the drugs, we try to enhance their physical strength and intelligence.
【Experimental process】
First dose: Subject experienced violent convulsions and vomiting within 10 minutes of injection, with heart rate increasing to 200 beats per minute. Subject howled in pain and attempted to break free.
Second dose: After the second dose, the subject's body temperature rose sharply to 40°C, muscles began to swell, and numerous blood vessels appeared on the skin's surface. The subject's eyes turned red, and their teeth and nails grew rapidly, becoming razor-sharp.
【Experimental results】
The subject died of internal organ failure within 30 minutes of receiving the second dose. An autopsy revealed that the subject's internal organs had completely liquefied and his blood was filled with an unknown toxin.
【in conclusion】
The modified genetic agent was extremely destructive to the orc genes and could not achieve the expected enhancement effect. Subject A-101 died, and the experiment failed.
Qiao Suisui's hands trembled slightly as she continued to flip through the next few pages. Each page recorded similar cruel experiments. Each experimental subject was a living being, struggling in pain and eventually dying on the experimental table.
[Subject No.: B-204]
Age: Just reached adulthood
Gender: Female
Race: Tiger Orc
【Purpose】
By implanting a chip in the brain, the behavior of the orcs can be controlled and their response to commands can be observed.
【Experimental process】
Chip implantation: The subject was forcibly implanted with a control chip without anesthesia. The subject screamed shrilly and tried to break free, but was forcibly suppressed by an electric shock device.
Behavior Control Test: After the chip was implanted, the subject's behavior became extremely violent and erratic. Experimenters attempted to control the subject's behavior using a remote control, but the subject repeatedly attempted self-harm and ultimately fell into a coma due to the electric shock device.
【Experimental results】
24 hours after the chip was implanted, the subject suffered severe brain hemorrhage and ultimately died of brain death. An autopsy revealed extensive inflammation and tissue necrosis at the site of the chip implantation.
【in conclusion】
The brain chip implant is extremely repulsive to the orc gene, and cannot achieve the desired control effect. Test subject B-204 has died, and the experiment has failed.
Qiao Suisui trembled as she looked at the photos and records of the various deaths. She seemed to be hallucinating, hearing screams from all over the laboratory.
Suddenly, a hand covered her eyes from behind.
Karl hugged her, his chest pressed against her back, delivering reassuring warmth.
"Don't be afraid, dear."
Qiao Suisui calmed down and found her voice after a while: "So the Federation wanted to cover up such a cruel thing."
In reality, Karl was also shocked by the Federation's actions, but he didn't show it on his face. He hurried out, holding Qiao Suisui's hand. He had a premonition that this matter was not simple. If anyone discovered that they had learned this secret, they would definitely not see the sun tomorrow.
Suddenly, a violent tremor shook the entire underground space. Qiao Suisui and Karl were shaken to the point of being unsteady on their feet, and the surrounding equipment and pipes made a harsh noise.
Carl immediately used his Break ability to try to take her back directly, but found that his talent was ineffective.
"What's going on? This is impossible!"
He launched another attack to break it, but the black hole still didn't open. "Damn it!"
The rubble and lampshades above their heads fell down. Karl quickly protected Qiao Susu in his arms. Just as a huge beam top was about to fall towards them, there was a loud "boom"!
A hole was created in the laboratory's ceiling by heavy artillery fire, and light leaked in from the ground. A man was half-crouching beside the hole. He was holding onto the exposed steel bars with one hand and reaching out towards Qiao Susu with the other.
"Qiao Qiao, grab my hand!"
This book is expected to be 600,000 words. Many of my longtime readers know that, in addition to writing about one woman and multiple men, I'm also adept at plot twists. Nothing is certain until the very last moment. I understand the anxiety of following a series, and I'm deeply grateful to those who tip and vote. For you all, I feel it's important to explain: 1. I'll update two chapters daily, with no single day being over 4,000 words. If there's only one chapter, it means I wrote something you'd like to read, but it was blocked for review. What you can read now is all I've painstakingly crafted to maximize your experience. I've deleted any that didn't pass muster. 2. Munakata is the male character I focus on the most, and his arc is the most complete. Every plot point and foreshadowing is essential. By the way, please vote for the Daydreamer campaign. Go to your Qyue [My] page, scroll down to the 2024 Women's Shortlisted Novels section, and vote. If I win a spot in this campaign, I'll write something you'll like on Ifadian (ahem, get it?) to express my gratitude.
