Chapter 10: Famine is coming

After two days, Xiaoya came to play with Jiaojiao. After Xiaoya was rescued, her whole family came to give gifts to Old Lady Feng. It was all thanks to Jiaojiao, otherwise Xiaoya would have been in great danger.

The first month of the lunar year soon passed. One morning, when Jiaojiao got up for her daily divination training, her expression suddenly became solemn.

She failed again, and the hexagram was still the same as before.

When Old Lady Feng saw that her face looked strange, her heart began to beat fast.

"Great-grandma, please plant more potatoes and sweet potatoes." Jiaojiao said.

Potatoes and sweet potatoes? These are high-yield...

"Are we going to have a famine here too?" asked Old Lady Feng.

In the past two years, famine has hit many places, and many people have left their homes to seek a living elsewhere. Their village has taken in many refugees.

"It rained heavily for several days during the autumn harvest, and the crops in the fields could not be saved," said Jiaojiao.

Old Lady Feng calculated that if they planted potatoes and sweet potatoes now, they would be ready for harvest in August. The autumn harvest would be just over a month away.

"Is there a lot of damage?" asked Old Lady Feng.

Jiaojiao nodded. "A lot. Many places have been affected. There's no one left in the village. They've all gone begging."

Old Lady Feng couldn't help but gasp: "Oh my goodness."

Old Lady Feng is sixty years old this year. She experienced a great famine in her youth, which was truly hell on earth. She never expected that it would happen again this year.

"It's so serious that I have to tell the villagers." Old Lady Feng muttered to herself, "I just don't know if they will believe it..."

"Let's plant first!" Jiaojiao said, "Buy food first, then plant."

Old Lady Feng nodded and said, "We have three mu of land, and we're currently growing winter wheat. However, I can ask the village chief to buy another piece of land."

"Then great-grandmother will go find the village chief." Jiaojiao thought for a while, stretched out her hand, and a peach appeared out of thin air in her palm.

"Great-grandmother, take this to the village chief. His liver, stomach, and kidneys are all in trouble. Eating this will cure them all. Then he'll trust you."

Old Mrs. Feng was startled and quickly ran to close the door.

"Jiaojiao, where did you get this peach?"

"I picked them in a fairyland," Jiaojiao replied. "Great-grandmother, you guys have eaten some before."

"When?" Old Mrs. Feng had no impression.

"Dried peaches."

Last summer, to make Jiaojiao smell like peaches, Old Lady Feng often sent the village children to search the mountains and fields for peaches. When there were too many peaches to eat, they made them into dried peaches, which was also a small snack.

When Jiaojiao said this, Old Lady Feng remembered that some dried peaches tasted average, while others were incredibly delicious. The flavor was so fragrant that she almost swallowed her tongue.

"So it was you who did it!" Old Mrs. Feng was at a loss whether to laugh or cry.

She still remembers that after eating the dried peaches, she had diarrhea for two days—a truly stinking diarrhea! But afterward, she felt much more relaxed, and walked as if the wind was blowing under her feet. It's a feeling young people don't easily grasp; only the elderly know what it's like.

Not only that, her eyesight has also become much brighter, and she can see clearly at a distance. Before, she was like a blind person at night, but now she can see things clearly at night.

Jiaojiao could only smile foolishly. She hadn't dared to tell Old Lady Feng before because she was worried. She had come here over a thousand years ago, unfamiliar with the place, and hadn't dared to easily reveal her uniqueness. But after spending more than six months together, she knew deeply that Old Lady Feng loved her dearly. She had no worries about sharing her secret with her.

"Then how do I explain this peach to the village chief?" In the cold winter, the juicy peach appeared, which was quite scary.

"Or dried peaches will do."

Old Lady Feng smiled awkwardly: "The dried peaches are long gone!"

When they first discovered that dried peaches were delicious, Old Lady Feng and Shuixiu ate all the dozens of them in one day.

"How about making it now?"

Old Lady Feng looked at the peach in Jiaojiao's hand and swallowed her saliva: "Such a juicy peach, what a pity..."

Gulp! Gulp! Old Lady Feng swallowed her saliva frantically.

Jiaojiao brought the peach to Old Lady Feng's mouth: "Grandma, please eat it!"

Old Lady Feng swallowed her saliva and shook her head: "Such a precious fairy peach, you can eat it if you want..."

Jiaojiao made big circles with her hands and said, "There are so many peach trees in my fairyland! There are over a hundred of them, and every tree is laden with fruit. I eat them every day."

Well, no wonder it’s filled with peach.

"Besides, it's been half a year since you and mom have eaten dried peaches. The effect of peaches has gradually weakened. It's time to eat some more." In addition to the divination and prediction skills inherited from generations in her family, Jiaojiao has an additional dimension that allows her to see the vitality of the human body, the internal organs of humans, and even those of animals and plants.

Old Mrs. Feng finally couldn't help herself and ate the peach.

After eating, she sighed: "This is really something from the immortals. How can I be so worthy as to eat something from the immortals..."

She gently pinched Jiaojiao's cheeks again: "It's all thanks to my Jiaojiao..."

Jiaojiao puffed up her cheeks: "Grandma! Don't pinch me!"

She has a pair of bright black eyes and her fair cheeks are bulging like a round glutinous rice dumpling.

"Oh my~ How can my Jiaojiao be so cute!" Old Lady Feng couldn't help but tap Jiaojiao's puffy cheeks with her fingers. "Okay, okay, no pinching, just a tap, okay?"

Jiaojiao had no choice but to give up.

"By the way, let's get back to business. I should go talk to the village chief first. Tell him that an immortal came to me in a dream and told me that there would be heavy rain for several days before the autumn harvest and the crops in the fields would be completely destroyed. If he doesn't believe it, we can make other plans!" Old Lady Feng suggested.

Jiaojiao nodded: "Okay! By the way, great-grandmother, don't go home after visiting the village chief. Go out of the east end of the village and follow the main road straight north. You will meet a man on the way. Go and save him. He will bring us some opportunities later."
