"Okay!" Old Mrs. Feng stood up, picked up her medical bag, and went out to the captain's house.
Wang Yucai, the village chief of Wangjia Village, sat under a large tree at the entrance of his home, smoking his pipe. He took a few puffs from his pipe and then let out a long breath.
"The village chief is at home!" Old Mrs. Feng greeted the village chief.
"Old Lady Feng!" The village chief put his eye bags aside and stood up.
Old Lady Feng is very famous in several nearby villages. These events after the Chinese New Year this year have made everyone respect her even more.
"Hey, is everything okay, Village Chief? I have something to tell you."
"It's okay, you say!"
Old Lady Feng waved her hand and said, "Let's go inside and talk."
After saying that, she took the lead and walked towards the village chief's house. The village chief followed Old Lady Feng into the house.
The village chief's family was alone, so the children went out to play in the cool morning weather. The village chief's wife had gone to visit relatives.
"Village Chief, I didn't want to tell you about this. I was afraid you wouldn't believe me..."
"You say it! I believe everything you say!" The village chief interrupted Old Lady Feng. "Old Lady Feng, you are the most important person in our brigade. Who dares not to believe you?"
Old Lady Feng paused. Could it be that simple?
"Listen to me first! This is no small matter! It concerns the lives of our entire team!"
The village chief grew even more nervous. He asked softly, "Is it so serious? Did the gods give us... instructions again?"
Old Lady Feng blinked. "I didn't expect you to be such a village chief! You accepted it faster than I did!"
"Last night, a deity appeared in my dream and told me that there would be a heavy rainstorm before the autumn harvest. It would last for several days and eventually turn into a flood. All the crops in the fields would be wiped out. He told me to prepare in advance!"
"What?" The village chief stood up in shock. "Did the gods really say that?"
Old Mrs. Feng nodded affirmatively.
"No harvest? Where are those places?"
"Our entire county, even our province and several nearby provinces, have been hit by the disaster!" Old Lady Feng said, "However, I can't say anything about other places, but I can't stand by and watch everyone in Wangjia Village suffer. If we don't find a solution now, in six months, not only will people in our village starve to death, but everyone in Wangjia Village will be forced to beg... By then, the roads will be filled with people fleeing the famine, and people will die along the way... It's too tragic..."
"What? So many disaster-stricken areas? I still remember the disaster years in the past. I could see people fleeing famine every day. It was so tragic! This year, so many disaster-stricken areas are there. Where can they flee to?"
The village chief walked around the room with a frown on his face.
"Every spring famine kills many people, and we're just waiting for the autumn harvest to bring in some food. No! I have to report this to the higher-ups!"
Old Lady Feng asked him, "How are you going to report this? Are you going to say that the gods appeared in my dreams?"
The village chief opened his mouth. Yes, he knew that there was something different about Old Lady Feng's family, but no one else knew! Moreover, everyone from top to bottom was opposing feudal superstition. If he dared to report this dream to his superiors, the only result would probably be his dismissal.
Being stripped of one's official position is a small matter. No one believes the report, and if Old Lady Feng's family is implicated, it will be disastrous.
"What should we do? We can't just watch everyone suffer from the disaster." The village chief frowned.
"Anyway, you should arrange production in Wangjia Village first. Now is the time to plant potatoes and sweet potatoes, so you should ask the villagers to plant more. I have something else to do, so I'll be leaving now. If you come up with any good ideas, tell me!"
Old Mrs. Feng was still thinking about the patient on the road. After saying goodbye to the captain, she walked towards the east end of the village.
She followed Jiaojiao's instructions and walked four miles on the road. From a distance, she saw a group of people gathered on the roadside ahead.
Old Lady Feng quickened her pace, pushed through the crowd and squeezed in to take a look. Oh my god, someone was bitten on the ankle by a poisonous snake!
"Move forward, let me see!" Old Lady Feng said.
Everyone just saw her and said quickly, "Old Lady Feng is here, please make way!"
Old Lady Feng took out a silver needle and quickly inserted several needles around the wound. She then rolled up the man's trouser legs and inserted a needle three and five fingers above the wound to prevent the blood from flowing upwards.
"What snake bit you, and how long has it been going on?"
"It should be a cobra, just now." The person next to him answered.
Old Lady Feng took out the water bag and shook it, feeling a pang of pain in her heart, because the water bag contained the water from the fairyland that Jiaojiao had filled for her.
She unplugged the wound and began to rinse. The spring water, diluted with cold water, wasn't very effective. Old Lady Feng continued to rinse until bright red blood began to flow.
She took out a few herbal leaves from her bag, rubbed them vigorously in her palms, and then applied them to the wound.
Finally, she took out another black pill from her bag and stuffed it into the injured person's mouth.
After doing all this, Old Lady Feng clapped her hands and said, "Alright, wait for me to put another bandage on you and take out the silver needles, and you'll be almost done."
Her technique of inserting and removing the needle was very quick. Everyone only saw a flash before their eyes as she removed the needle.
"Okay, just go home and have two good meals to replenish your energy." After saying this, Old Lady Feng pushed aside the crowd and went home.
She wasn't afraid that this person wouldn't look for her. After all, her great-granddaughter had said that this person would bring opportunities to their village. Finding her wouldn't be easy.
Old Lady Feng turned and left, and the injured person didn't even have time to say thank you.
"Who was that just now?" asked the injured man.
A local immediately replied, "That's Old Lady Feng, a famous midwife in our surrounding villages. She also treats illnesses. Everyone in our area knows her!"
The injured person looked to the side, and the person who came with him quickly took out a small notebook and wrote down: Old Lady Feng, midwife.
Old Mrs. Feng didn't know all this. She hurried home to take stock of the food at home and start preparing before the village chief took any action.
