Chapter 7: Stopping Squibs from Hurting People

On the morning of the first day of the Lunar New Year, Jiaojiao was still half asleep when she was awakened by the sound of firecrackers going off in the village.

Jiaojiao couldn't sleep, so she rubbed her eyes and got up.

"Happy New Year, great-grandmother!" Jiaojiao rubbed her eyes and said the first words of the New Year to Grandma Feng in a daze. This sentence made Grandma Feng very happy.

"Oh my dear! You put it so clearly! My Jiaojiao is so amazing!" Old Mrs. Feng picked up Jiaojiao and kissed her little face non-stop.

"Jiaojiao, where am I? Where is my aunt?" Lianhua came over and asked.

"Happy New Year, Auntie!" Jiaojiao said, then paused. "Beautiful!"

"Hahahaha! Jiaojiao, you understand me so well!" Lianhua laughed.

"Jiaojiao, where is your mother?" Shuixiu couldn't get the chance to stand beside Lianhua and was ranked last.

"Happy New Year, Mom!" Jiaojiao stopped, tilted her head and looked at Shuixiu, then said after a while, "Smile more!"

Shuixiu's eyes instantly became moist. She sniffed and smiled, "Okay! I'll listen to Jiaojiao and smile more in the future!"

Shuixiu is an introvert by nature, and used to be like Lin Daiyu. But since she gave birth to Jiaojiao, she has become more cheerful and no longer cries out of worry like before.

"Where is my great-grandmother?" Old Mrs. Feng was dissatisfied and kept asking.

"Longevity!" Jiaojiao blurted out a word, and her tender little hands touched Old Lady Feng's face.

"Oh! Jiaojiao said it very well. Auntie will cook you a brown sugar poached egg. You have such a sweet mouth, and it will be even sweeter after eating some brown sugar!" Lianhua clapped her hands.

Shuixiu also nodded in agreement.

Old Mrs. Feng smiled so hard that her teeth were visible.

"Happy New Year, grandma!" The crisp voices of several children came from outside the door.

"Hey, Happy New Year! Come in, I'll get you some delicious food!"

Shuixiu opened the wooden door, and a group of children rushed in. Most of these children were there to help the old lady find peaches in the summer, and they got a lot of snacks from her. From then on, the old lady's position in their hearts was unshakable and first!

With the addition of a child, the old lady's patience with other children has also increased. Knowing that the children would come to visit during the Chinese New Year, she specially fried a lot of peanuts, sunflower seeds and sesame candies.

Each child filled his pockets with peanuts and sunflower seeds, and a piece of candy, and then went out happily to look for firecrackers.

Children are the happiest when setting off firecrackers during the Lunar New Year. Some duds always fall to the ground. Picking up the few duds amidst the red debris is a test of both eyesight and luck.

Dashan was always good at picking up duds. Every year, he collected the most. He was bold and careful, with sharp eyes and quick hands, and he was always the first to find them while the other kids were still scrambling around.

This year was sure to be no exception! Dashan had already found two duds among the scattered red shards on his ground. A good start! Today was sure to be another fruitful day. He was filled with hope.

However, a few children had just left Old Lady Feng's house, shouting, "Let's go find some firecrackers!"

Mrs. Feng's precious child suddenly yelled, "Don't go!"

Several children stopped and looked at Jiaojiao in the yard from outside the fence.

I saw Jiaojiao waving her arms and shouting, "No! Blast! Blast my hands! Blast my eyes!"

The expression of Old Lady Feng, who was holding Jiaojiao, changed immediately. She asked hurriedly, "Jiaojiao, what did you say?"

"Blast your hands! Blast your eyes!" Jiaojiao repeated again.

Old Lady Feng's face immediately turned sour. She said to the children across the fence, "Did you hear that? Jiaojiao, only four years old, knows that firecrackers can explode in the face. You can't pick up firecrackers!"

The children were skeptical, but Dashan, feeling a little itchy, urged them softly, "Let's go, let's go!"

The little kids looked at each other and suddenly ran away.

"Hey! Dashan! Gou'er, don't pick up firecrackers! Do you hear me?" Old Lady Feng chased after Jiaojiao. The children had already run away laughing and disappeared.

"These naughty monkeys!"

Old Lady Feng said to Lotus in the yard, "Lotus, I'm going to talk to the adults. You guys go cook first."

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, Old Lady Feng went from house to house asking adults to keep an eye on their children and be careful with firecrackers.

Some parents became alert and followed Old Lady Feng out to look for their children.

Some of them laughed and said that the children were tough and played like this every year, so it was no big deal.

Fortunately, Mrs. Feng firmly believed that Jiaojiao would not say anything nonsense. Even if some parents did not go to look for them, she would not give up and rushed over following the sounds of children playing.

Dashan had already picked up three duds, while the other children had picked up one or none.

Dashan held his chest high, like a big rooster, and led a group of children to the next position with his head held high.

"Dashan, stop right there!" When Old Lady Feng saw Dashan was about to pick up firecrackers again, she hurriedly shouted to stop him.

Dashan hesitated for a moment. Seeing this, Goudan behind him quickly slipped over and picked up the dud that Dashan had not had time to pick up.

Jiaojiao suddenly cried out, "It's almost lost!"

Old Lady Feng reacted very quickly. She immediately shouted, "Gou'er, throw it away! Throw it away!"

Goudan'er's parents also followed Old Lady Feng out to look for their child. Seeing this, they felt a pang of anxiety for some reason and started shouting, "He's almost lost!"

Goudaner didn't react and stood there in a daze. However, Dashan reacted quickly and snatched the firecrackers from Goudaner's hand and threw them away.

Just as he threw it out, the firecracker that had originally misfired suddenly exploded with a "bang".

"Dashan!" Dashan's mother screamed in horror.

Jiaojiao heaved a sigh of relief: "It's okay!"

Old Mrs. Feng's heart was in her throat, but when she heard Jiaojiao say that, she suddenly relaxed.
