Zombie Nine×Human Bell
On October 17, 3034, an autumn rain fell near Yu City, and the temperature dropped sharply.
Xue Ling sat in a medium-sized van, sharpening his chipped machete with a whetstone.
Recently, I feel that the zombie's neck is getting harder and harder. The blade often curls after just a few cuts and needs to be constantly sharpened.
This van has been modified. Except for the driver and co-driver seats, all the seats in the back have been removed and used to store things.
So Xue Ling sat on a small and uncomfortable stool, surrounded by tools and other things.
There were a lot of things placed in the small space, and several people were sitting in it. The windows were closed tightly, and there was a not-so-pleasant smell in the car.
The car was driving on the road when it suddenly hit a bump on the left side and stopped.
"What's going on?" asked the co-pilot's mother.
"The left tire looks like it's punctured, get out and take a look." said my stepfather in the driver's seat.
Xue Ling opened the car window, and a cold wind mixed with a foul smell blew into the car.
The smell indicated that someone or a zombie was rotting nearby.
Seeing that his uncle's car behind also stopped, Xue Ling took his knife, pushed the door and got out.
The stepfather called out to his sleepy son, "Gao Bin, get out of the car with your sister and check what's going on."
"I haven't heard of any robbery or zombies around here, so what can happen?" Gao Bin said this, but his father glared at him and he got out of the car anyway.
Xue Ling had already walked to the rear tire and said to her stepfather, "Uncle Gao, there are two long nails stuck in the rear tire."
My stepfather also got out of the car: "Gao Bin, give me a hand and change the tire."
"Nowadays, these people are all mentally abnormal and can't stand seeing others doing well." Stepbrother Gao Bin cursed as he went to the car to get a replacement tire.
"Brother-in-law, what happened?" My uncle's car was following behind and luckily he was not hit.
"I got a puncture again. I'll change the tire and leave."
It has been two years since the apocalypse, and all bases have basically gotten back on track. The better ones can find jobs in the bases, the braver ones drive out to scavenge, and some people simply start robbing and murdering.
They would set up obstacles on the road or hide nails, and then wait for cars to pass by and stop, and then they would come out and rob them.
But there are some people who are just plain bad and deliberately put nails on the road to puncture other people's tires.
Trucks like theirs that often go out to pick up scraps encounter this kind of thing almost every time.
They were a group of six people in two cars, and they couldn't go far to scavenge, so they just looked for missed supplies in the surrounding cities. Although the harvest was not much, it was still safe.
Xue Ling was squatting beside the car watching her stepfather and stepson changing the tire, when she suddenly felt a sense of being watched.
She turned her head and looked at the roadside. There were only two old houses that had been demolished and only the frames were left. There was nothing else.
"Okay, let's all get in the car. Lingling, you should get in too."
"Okay, here we come." Xue Ling got into the car with his knife, and the two cars quickly continued on their way, one after the other.
The location for their scavenging this time was Xinyan City, which required a two-hour drive.
After the car left, a figure walked out from behind a wall of the old house.
The man was very tall. In this season when almost everyone wore coats, he was still wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt, and his exposed arms were pale and looked deathly.
He stood at the place where Xue Ling had squatted just now by the roadside, looking at the direction where the two cars disappeared, and then looked down at the few grass leaves and stems on the ground, which Xue Ling had pulled up and played with when he was squatting here with nothing to do.
He bent down and picked up a ring made of rolled grass stalks.
Xue Ling was very different from what he remembered, but he still recognized her easily.
The last time they met was two years ago. At that time, Xue Ling still had long hair that was past her shoulders, but now, her hair is so short that her scalp can be seen.
His fair skin was tanned by the sun, and he was wearing gray clothes. At first glance, he looked like a dark and skinny boy.
She was living with her family and should be doing well, but why did he feel that she had lost so much weight?
.
Xue Ling held up a modified riot fork and pressed a zombie against the wall. His stepbrother Gao Bin wielded a machete and chopped off the zombie's head.
The first and second blows failed to cut it off, and the head rolled to the side with the third blow.
The zombie struggled so hard and was so strong that Xue Ling used all his strength but was almost unable to hold it back and was thrown away by it.
My stepbrother was sweating on his forehead and said with some dissatisfaction: "If you hadn't held on tighter, you would have almost caught me."
It was not the first time for them to come out to scavenge, nor was it the first time for them to fight zombies, but every time they saw these ferocious and crazy zombies, they would still feel nervous when facing them.
Xue Ling let go of the anti-riot fork, shook his weak hands, and said, "Next time you press the button and I'll kill, okay?"
The stepbrother curled his lips, muttered a few words, turned around and sat down to rest.
When it got dark, they found a yard that had been cleaned up before to spend the night. After killing zombies all afternoon and looking for supplies, everyone was very tired, so they sat down and ate some instant food.
Their scavenging team, which was composed of families, was not as daring and hard-working as those teams composed entirely of young people. The supplies they found each time were not very abundant, so they were usually very frugal in their food and daily necessities.
What Xue Ling is eating now is a kind of dry noodles made from the base. They can be broken into pieces and eaten directly, or soaked in hot water. They are very choking when eaten dry, and the taste is not very good when eaten soaked.
Xue Ling was too tired and had no appetite. After eating half a pack, he sat there with the simple packaging bag to relax.
Mom brought over a cup of hot water: "Lingling, drink some hot water."
Xue Ling made room for her mother, took the thermos and took a sip. It tasted sweet with a hint of milk.
She looked at her mother, who touched her head and said, "Drink it quickly."
They now live together as a big family, and my stepfather's son and daughter are married and have children.
My stepson and his wife have a pair of children. My sister-in-law is in poor health and can only stay at home. My stepson's husband has died and she has a very young daughter. All the sugar and milk powder in the house are used for the children and my sister-in-law who is in poor health.
Xue Ling hadn't tasted sugar for a while, and she didn't know where her mother saved the milk and sugar to secretly give her to drink.
"You didn't have your period this month?" Mom suddenly asked in a low voice, looking worried.
"Well, it's good that you don't come. It would be troublesome if you came, and it would not be convenient to kill zombies." Xue Ling replied.
The mother suddenly reached out and hugged her, her voice choking: "My daughter has suffered, why are you so stubborn? You want to go out with us to scavenge and kill zombies. It must be so hard. Mom is really afraid that one day you will accidentally..."
Xue Ling guessed what she wanted to say and didn't respond.
Sure enough, after feeling sad for a while, the mother said, "Lingling, I've thought about it. You can't do this. Find a suitable person to marry like your cousin, and take care of the children at the base. You don't have to go out and take risks. Look at your cousin, your stepsister, and your sister-in-law. Who works as hard as you do?"
"The mother you met last time looked pretty good. You have three brothers at home, so you don't have to go out and kill zombies. She also liked you. If you agree, you can stay at home and take care of yourself this time. Don't shave your hair anymore. Others will think you look like a boy..."
Xue Ling listened to her mother's rambling and felt more and more helpless.
This was not the first time her mother had said this to her.
She knew that her mother was doing this for her own good, but Xue Ling didn't want the "good" in her eyes.
Rather than marrying a random stranger who could support her like her cousin did, she would rather go out and kill zombies.
She didn’t think it was a big deal that she didn’t have her period due to malnutrition. At least she could still eat enough, which made her luckier than many girls.
"Mom, I'm going to the bathroom." Xue Ling didn't want to listen anymore and made excuses to avoid her mother's endless persuasion.
"Just go behind that house. Don't go too far. Bring your flashlight and be careful. How about Mommy go with you?"
"Mom, no need, I will be careful, you go and rest."
Xue Ling habitually took the riot fork and knife and went to the back of the house.
She didn't want to go to the bathroom, she just wanted to find a place to stay quiet.
Squatting at the base of an empty wall, Xue Ling let out a breath slowly, staring at the dim corner with unfocused eyes.
Getting married?
When she was very young, she saw her parents falling out and their marriage in chaos, which left a deep impression on her.
When she grew up, she felt that she didn't want to get married when she grew up, and it was fine to live alone, so as to avoid quarrels and hurt.
However, she did think about marrying someone later.
This idea came to her one very ordinary night. She was preparing for an important exam, but she was unsure and had been nervous for several days.
A group of kids downstairs were screaming and making noise, making it difficult for her to study.
Wen Jiuze made quite a commotion in the living room for some unknown reason. Xue Ling couldn't help but yell, "Stop making noise, okay?"
She didn't hear Wen Jiuze speak, she only heard him close the door and leave.
After Xue Ling shouted, she felt a little nervous and uncomfortable, worried that Wen Jiuze was angry, but after a while she heard Wen Jiuze's voice sounding downstairs.
He sent away the noisy kids downstairs. Then he came upstairs with a small bag in his hand and asked her, "Would you like some iced green bean paste?"
Xue Ling was wearing pajamas, sipping the green bean paste, and said hesitantly, "I shouldn't have spoken so loudly just now."
Wen Jiuze said, "If you don't shout louder, how will the kids downstairs hear you?"
He reacted for a moment and then said, "Oh, so you were talking about me just now?"
But he didn't realize he was yelled at. He even laughed, "Your voice is not much louder than a bird's cry. If I didn't have good hearing, I would hardly hear it."
Xue Ling: “…”
When Xue Ling is with other people, she is usually the one with a more stable mood, but when she is with Wen Jiuze, Wen Jiuze is the most emotionally stable one.
Is it true that the closer we are, the easier it is to hurt each other?
From her mother and uncle, Xue Ling realized how terrible unstable emotions were, and secretly vowed that she would never be like them.
I also discovered from Wen Jiuze that I would eventually become the person I hate and would vent my emotions to people closer to me.
"Come here and kiss me, quickly." Wen Jiuze tapped his cheeks lazily with a smile, like a balloon that would never be fully inflated.
If they were with him, they wouldn't be like her parents, right? Xue Ling thought.
It's certainly not like her parents, who broke up before they even got married.
Why is it that after all this time, when I think about getting married, I still think about this damn ex-boyfriend.
Xue Ling was in a daze when she suddenly heard footsteps. She thought her mother was worried that she had been out for too long and came to urge her to get up. She just stood up on her knees and found that the approaching figure was very tall.
My stepfather, stepbrother and uncle were not that tall, and the outline of this figure seemed particularly familiar in the darkness.
Xue Ling turned on the lantern.
The light flickered across a familiar face, revealing the pale, stiff skin and dark red eyes.
"Click." The lantern fell to the ground, illuminating the ceiling.
"...Wen Jiuzhe." Xue Ling recognized him and realized belatedly that this was a zombie.
My ex-boyfriend turned into a zombie.
The damn ex-boyfriend is really dead.
Xue Ling froze in place for two seconds, then suddenly grabbed the riot fork leaning against the wall. Perhaps because she had used too much force today, her hand was shaking as she gripped the riot fork pole.
The ex-boyfriend who appeared here for no apparent reason had a scary zombie appearance. After a brief moment of silence, he suddenly stretched out his hand and made an attacking gesture towards her.
Xue Ling's heart skipped a beat. He raised the riot fork and skillfully put it around his neck, knocking the tall man to the ground.
