Chapter 345 Ancient Gu City Strategy (Part Two)

Todd gestured for everyone to crouch down and hide under the battlements, then whispered to Evie, "Don't rush, wait a little longer."

The latter glanced at him, nodded, and said nothing.

Soon, the enemy advanced another 150 meters.

This was already within the normal range of the bow and arrow, so the enemy's advance slowed down noticeably.

Evie then turned her questioning gaze to Todd, who shook his head again, saying, "It's not time yet, let's wait a little longer."

In the enemy's formation, a cavalry unit reached the city gate and shouted, but no one answered. The enemy then advanced another hundred meters.

Hiding under the battlements, Todd could already faintly hear the enemy's discussions.

Evie's eyes widened as she stared at Todd and whispered, "The enemy will be right under our noses soon! Are you going to wait a little longer?!"

Todd smiled at her and said slowly, "Trust me."

Evie gave Todd a deep look, gripped the bow in her hand, gritted her teeth, and turned her head toward Lera.

The enemy troops finally arrived within fifty meters of the city gate. A deep voice rang out from outside the gate: "I am Mashef, the vice-commander of the Second Expeditionary Legion of Ulster! In the name of the King, I order you to open the gate!"

The only response he received was a silent city wall.

A man who appeared to be an advisor approached Mashev and asked, "Sir, this situation is completely illogical. What should we do?"

Another aide suggested, "Looking from the hills we just passed, the port area is filled with thick smoke. It must have been captured by the enemy. They are likely advancing towards the city gates and will attack here soon."

Mount Mashev, a typical Alsterean, with a thick beard, a burly build, and a face covered in scars, roared at everyone, "I understand all of this! What I'm most puzzled about is, where are the guards at the city gate? Why is no one responding to us?!"

The staff members looked at each other, but no one could answer.

Seeing that no one could provide an answer, Mashev vented his anger before falling silent and thinking. He then turned to the quartermaster behind him and asked, "Do we have any climbing tools with us? Wooden ladders? Hooks will do!"

The quartermaster shook his head awkwardly and said, "Sir, your instructions were to discard all unnecessary supplies and reinforce Gugu City as quickly as possible, so..."

Mashev angrily brandished his whip: "Damn it! How was I supposed to know the city gates were closed when I got here!"

An aide offered a suggestion: "If the goal is simply to climb the city gate, we can gather the ropes in the army, make a noose, and have someone climb in to investigate."

Mashev immediately agreed to the idea.

Soon, the rope was made and thrown onto the city gate, where it hooked onto a sharp corner of the battlement.

Driven by clubs and sharp blades, a slave began to climb up the rope.

Hiding behind the wall, Todd watched the direction the noose would fall. He first gave the others a gesture to calm down, then signaled Evie to follow him and move towards the noose.

The unfortunate slave soldier, under the watchful eyes of thousands, finally managed to climb the city wall with tremendous effort. He jumped down from the battlements, but before he could even assess his surroundings, a hand covered his mouth from behind, and a sharp blade slit his throat.

Without uttering a single sound, the unfortunate slave soldier lost his life.

"You bastard up there! Tell me right now, what's going on inside the city gate?!" Mashev shouted several times, but received no response. Frustrated, he yelled, "Get someone else to climb up! Hurry up!"

The second and third slaves climbed up, only to meet the same fate as the first unlucky one.

The deputy commander, Mashev, who was already on the verge of rage, threw his riding whip heavily at Lin Mian and roared at his men with bloodshot eyes, "Everyone! Get down to the city wall and form a human wall to climb over! I want to see what's going on in there!"

One of the staff members said worriedly, "Forming a human wall will disrupt our formation and give the enemy the best opportunity to attack..."

Mashev raised his arm and cursed at the man, "You stupid idiot who can't think straight! Can't you see? If there were enemy soldiers in the city, arrows would have been falling on our heads long ago!"

The staff officer paused for a moment, then thought about it carefully. What the deputy commander said made sense. If there really was an enemy, according to the standard city defense procedure, the attack would usually be with arrows, catapults, logs, etc. How could the attacking army be allowed to swagger up to the city walls?

“But… the slaves we sent in before…” The aide was about to try to persuade them further when he discovered that Mashev had already begun issuing orders.

"Listen up, everyone! The enemy landing force has captured the port area and is advancing towards the city gates. We don't have much time left! We must take control of the city gates as soon as possible so we can reinforce our friendly forces inside!" Mashev waved his hand: "All infantry units, listen up! Form human walls! Climb in and open the city gates!"

At the commander's order, the infantry, lacking siege equipment, dropped their weapons and shields and began to send soldiers to the top of the city wall using the most primitive method of "building a human wall".

Hearing the commotion outside, Todd smiled and opened the wooden box beside him, revealing a full bundle of cotton and linen cloth.

“Do you remember how I showed you how to use this thing?” Todd pulled a dynamite pack from the wooden crate and said to the Valkyries behind the battlements, “Light the fuse, and when you see white smoke, immediately throw it off the wall.”
