Todd swallowed a mouthful of beer and asked in a low voice, "Tristan?"
Rachel nodded: "That little carpenter... found the castle in the forest, and even though Mia went crazy and attacked, he still treated that suffering girl with a tolerant and gentle heart."
“A few years later, the Elders discovered this gifted girl and took her away on a stormy night.” Rachel put down her beer, as if recalling that time: “Mia was later brought to the Elders’ headquarters, and that’s when I met her.”
Todd touched his forehead and interrupted Rachel: "Wait a minute. You mean you and Mia aren't sisters, that you met in the Elders' Council, then how come you look and have such similar figures?"
Rachel let out a long sigh of relief: "What I'm about to say is the answer."
“In the years that followed, Mia and I became inseparable friends. We studied together, played together, and endured punishments from our teachers together. But one day, a sudden disaster struck Mia. Elder Eleanor, in order to strengthen the Legion of Conflict, proposed a plan for interspecies breeding.” At this point, Rachel asked Todd, “Do you remember when I told you that interspecies could be divided into two categories based on their genetic makeup?”
Todd nodded: "One type of ability can be inherited from parents, such as your telekinesis, Karin's possession, and Mary's hypermemory... Another type is abilities that cannot be replicated through inheritance, such as regeneration, speed, and weakness."
“That’s right. Generally speaking, abilities that can replicate through genetics are more powerful, but they cannot infect and replicate by devouring flesh and blood.” Rachel shuddered as she said the next words: “So, Eleanor came up with a dehumanizing idea. She gathered together those mutants with genetically inherited abilities and used forced reproduction to cultivate new, powerful mutants.”
"Forced childbirth?!"
Rachel's face contorted with rage: "Drugs, coercion, even rape—Eleanor will stop at nothing to obtain genetically modified offspring."
Todd gasped: "Then Mia..."
Rachel gave a bitter laugh: "Right when this plan was announced, I sneaked into Eleanor's study and found that Mia was also on the list of those to be forced to reproduce sexually. Ignoring the possibility of punishment, I told her about it immediately..."
Todd pressed on, "And then what?"
“She ‘committed suicide.’” Rachel’s body swayed precariously. “She used her mind to hang a rope from the roof beam and ended her life with it.”
Todd's eyes widened, and he exclaimed softly, "My God!"
"Do you think that's all?"
Rachel's tears flowed again: "After Mia died, Eleanor learned that I had leaked the information, and to punish me... she extracted my soul from my body and infused it into Mia's corpse. In that demon's words, she wanted me to constantly witness my friend's misfortune..."
Upon hearing this, Todd suddenly remembered that Rachel had mentioned her infertility and the indentation on the top of her head. He immediately understood everything and muttered to himself in a voice only he could hear, "So that's it. Eleanor used the 'Resurrection Worm' on you."
