Chapter 562 Hearing the News

Lying on the velvet bed, Todd listened to the woman's heavy breathing beside him and said helplessly, "This kind of thing can continue tomorrow."

“I’m so exhausted…” Mary rested her head on Todd’s arm, her whole body looking as if she had just come out of the water. “I just need to sleep for a while.”

Todd lowered his head and gently kissed Mary's forehead, his eyes catching a glimpse of a mannequin covered in a white cloth in the corner of the bedroom.

What is that?

Upon hearing Todd's question, Mary struggled to cover his eyes with her hands and hurriedly said, "That's an outfit I'm designing!"

"Can I lift the cloth and take a look?"

“No!” Mary paused for a moment and said in a low voice, “At least not now…”

"When...?"

Still half-asleep, Mary collapsed onto the bed and said weakly, "Don't worry, when the time comes, I'll wear it myself for you to see..."

Seeing Mary's stubborn expression, Todd smiled, shook his head, hugged her, and slowly closed his eyes.

Wailing Island, Mermaid Commercial District.

Sitting in a newly built tavern by the sea, Carol watched as a beautiful mermaid excitedly swam from the sea along a pre-constructed waterway to the tavern's bar. The mermaid placed her hands on the wooden handrail and asked the human bartender above her for a glass of gin on the rocks. The orc looked somewhat stunned.

Aldenan glanced at the mermaid's curvaceous figure and impeccable face, secretly whistled, and sighed, "No wonder some people say that the Creator is never fair."

Carol said in a low voice, "It's only been a little over a month, and these merfolk have already adapted to our lives."

"That's not surprising. In this world, whether it's food or entertainment, what city can compare to Twilight City?"

As Aldenan spoke, he popped a roasted chicken leg into his mouth: "There are now more than 30 shops on Waiheke Island. In addition to the usual restaurants, bars and accessories, I heard that an open-air theater will be built next month... Now many people in the city can't wait to move to the island."

Taking a small sip of her gin with ice, the beautiful mermaid let out a pleasant exclamation, took a gold coin from her pocket, tossed it to the bartender, and said, "Another plate of fried shrimp, please!"

The glittering coins landed in front of the bartender with a crisp, melodious sound, drawing gasps of surprise from the surrounding diners.

Aldenan scoffed, "One gold coin can buy a bucket of fried shrimp... I have to say, these merfolk are really rich..."

Carol stroked her chin and twisted her neck: "The day before yesterday morning, I saw the mermaid chieftain, the woman named Rita, at the bank on the island. She was carrying a large bag of pearls the size of snake fruits, intending to exchange them for common currency and distribute them to her people."

Aldenan took a swig of ale and asked curiously, "A pearl the size of a snake fruit? Do such things even exist? Okay, how much did you get for it?"

Carol shrugged. "Let me put it this way, that Wailing Island branch now belongs to the mermaids. In the words of that bank manager, all the coins in the branch's vault combined wouldn't be enough to buy those pearls..."

puff!

Aldenan spat out all the beer he was drinking.

Wiping the wine stains from his mouth, Aldenan's eyes widened: "That guy really sold the bank to the mermaid?"

“Not only the money in the vault, but also the land and buildings were sold to the mermaids as cash.” Carol said softly, watching two more mermaids slowly swimming towards the bar not far away. “I heard the bank manager say that he wouldn’t use unfair means to deceive those mermaids for a little profit, because he didn’t want to add a weight called ‘evil’ to the scales of his fate after he died.”

Aldenan nodded understandingly: "He's not wrong."

Two mermaids swam closer and closer in the distance. One was an adult woman, while the other looked like a ten-year-old human girl.

The young mermaid still seemed to be filled with fear and wariness towards the land world, and hesitated to swim into the waterway under the eaves of the bar.

With repeated encouragement from her companions, the young mermaid finally mustered the courage to go to the area under the bar and ordered a plate of crispy fish cakes and a bottle of juice.

Aldenan nudged Carol with his elbow: "So far, it seems that all the mermaids who have appeared are female?"

"Have you forgotten? Only female mermaids have the right to contact the outside world; male mermaids are only fit to guard homes, herd livestock, and hunt."

Aldenan breathed a sigh of relief: "Thank you, Holy King, I was not born in the water."

Just as the orcs and werewolves were talking, a dark-skinned minotaur wearing chainmail and earrings rushed into the bar and began looking around.

Aldenan craned his neck, pointed to the door, and said to Carroll, "Look, isn't that Bourville, who's on duty with us?"

Carol turned her head, confirmed the identity of the newcomer, raised her hand and shouted, "Blackie! Look over here! Come on over, let's have a drink!"

Upon seeing Carol, the minotaur rushed over, saying anxiously, "You still have the mind to drink here?!"

Carroll and Aldenan looked at each other in bewilderment.

"What's wrong?"

The minotaur pointed in the direction of Twilight City and spoke rapidly: "Miss Barbara and Mr. Randall are surrounded by a large group of Crusader members! They say they're going to send them to the Land of Judgment!"
