Sweet little crybaby
As the clock struck midnight, Nanqi and her family of three set off fireworks in their yard. Five buckets of fireworks exploded one after another, scattering colorful bursts into the sky. She recorded a video and sent it to Song Zhao, in which she cheerfully wished him a Happy New Year!
Song Zhao said yesterday that her family doesn't have the custom of staying up all night on New Year's Eve; they each go to sleep when their own biological clocks kick in. So Nan Qi wasn't sure if Song Zhao was asleep or if it was convenient for her to answer her call, but she wanted to celebrate the New Year with her in her own way.
The video had just been sent when Song Zhao called. Nanqi covered her ears and went back to her room.
"Hey, you're still awake?" Nanqi said in a sweet, coquettish voice.
Hearing the sounds of fireworks and firecrackers on the other end of the phone, Song Zhao laughed and said, "I went to bed late, so it must be quite lively over there."
"Absolutely, it'll be crackling all night long, making it hard to sleep. And then you still have to go visit relatives and friends for the New Year when it gets light."
"Did you miss me?" Song Zhao suddenly changed the subject.
Nanqi chuckled and said, "I really, really want to, I really, really want to, the kind of want to kiss you."
“Me too, but it’s the kind of desire that I want to sleep with you~” Song Zhao deliberately raised the volume of the word “sleep with”.
"Hey~ Why are you still so unserious at home?"
"No one is in my room, and the soundproofing in my house is pretty good, so other rooms shouldn't be able to hear it."
"How about this, I'll take a picture for you to ease your longing."
“Hmm…” Song Zhao thought to himself, “Why don’t you send me a nude photo? I’ll take it as you sleeping with me.”
"Tsk, why are you fantasizing like this?" Nanqi muttered. "No, you're not my wife, you're some big bastard, get off my wife right now, Mommy Mommy bang!"
Song Zhao laughed even harder and chimed in, "You're really smart, you could even figure that out. But your boyfriend is in my hands now, I won't leave until he satisfies me."
"You shameless!!"
Nanqi angrily hung up the phone, but then she thought about it and worried that Song Zhao might be lonely and secretly masturbate behind her back. So she ran to the bathroom, unbuttoned two buttons of her clothes, revealing her half-naked, fair breasts, made a peace sign, took a picture, and sent it to her.
- Just take a look, this is the only one from the past seven days.
A short while later, Song Zhao replied:
-You're so stingy.
- Sigh, what can I do? I ended up with a stingy girlfriend.
And you called me stingy? You have that face of yours, you seduce me every day, do you think it's easy for me to put up with you?
Just as Nanqi was about to retort, Song Zhao sent her a photo. It was a picture of her naked body facing a full-length mirror, twisting to the side, revealing her private parts. Nanqi was immediately shocked and her blood was boiling.
Nanqi was so shocked she almost dropped her phone into the toilet. She calmed herself down and immediately deleted the photos.
-If you keep trying to seduce me, I'll get angry!
- Okay then, I won't seduce you.
She splashed several handfuls of ice water on her face to cool herself down and clear her head.
They were busy on the first day of the Lunar New Year. In the morning, they received gifts from others, and in the afternoon, they visited other people's homes with gifts. Zhang Bing was quite generous, giving each of the two sisters a 500 yuan red envelope as encouragement for Nanqi for not causing trouble in the last few months of the previous semester.
Seeing this, Wu Hua left an extra red envelope for Nan Qi's younger cousin before leaving.
Nanqi is a lively person who loves to be around people. During the Chinese New Year, she is always energetic and playful. When she goes to other people's houses, she either teases the cats and dogs or plays with several children younger than her. She doesn't feel that there is a generation gap between her and them. She can even play games with three-year-olds.
However, this year, Song Zhao was all she could think about. Even though she was having fun, she felt empty inside and wasn't as happy.
She was busy all day and was slow to reply to Song Zhao's messages. In the evening, Song Zhao became busy and said, "Something came up, I'll be back later." Then there was no more news.
Tomorrow is Song Zhao's birthday, but she won't be able to give her a gift. Song Zhao will be spending the day with her family, and she doesn't know if she'll have time to chat with her.
"Sister, sister? Sister!" Nan Yue called out, gradually raising her voice.
"Ah!" Nanqi was startled by her scream.
"Do you miss my brother-in-law?" Nan Yue asked, blinking her eyes.
Nanqi glanced at her sideways, lay on the bed, propped her chin up with her hand, and scrolled through photos of her and Song Zhao.
"Tsk tsk tsk, a little woman in love."
"Leave me alone, I'm annoyed!"
Aren't you afraid Mom will find out?
"So what if she figured it out? She'll find out sooner or later anyway."
“That makes sense. Should I go tell her now?”
As Nan Yue spoke, she jumped off the bed.
Nanqi immediately stood up and pounced on her onto her bed, saying, "Do you want to die?"
"Pah, pah, pah, are you cursing me on New Year's Day?"
"Pah, pah, pah! I won't curse you, I'll just slap you!"
Nanqi flipped Nanyue over and slapped her on the bottom.
Nan Yue quickly covered the spot where she had been hit, pouting and saying, "Don't hit me, don't hit me, I was just talking nonsense..."
"I'm telling you today, there are some things you shouldn't say carelessly."
"Oh, okay, I won't say anything more," Nan Yue said coquettishly.
Nanqi knew she was being difficult, so she went along with it and teased her a bit to relieve her frustration.
Yesterday we were talking about Song Zhao, and today she's experiencing the pain of unrequited love herself.
Nanqi slumped in the chair, leaning back and staring blankly into space.
"Sis, have you thought about it? Do you two have a future?"
The future seems so distant. Nanqi had fantasized about their old age, two old ladies helping each other across the street with canes, but she dared not think about the realities of life. At least, she didn't know how to talk to Wu Hua about it.
One thing she was certain of was that she would not abandon Song Zhao, no matter who opposed her.
Nanqi glanced at her and said, "Are you sleepy? If you are, go to sleep early."
"Tch~, if you don't want to talk about it, fine. Anyway, the day you abandon your brother-in-law, I'll just go with my rich brother-in-law."
Nanqi chuckled and said, "I really don't know whether I should be happy for your brother-in-law or sad for her."
What's making you sad?
"It's sad that you're on her side, all for the money."
"Hmph~"
It was late at night when Nanqi finally went to bed. She had insomnia, the first time she had ever been so sleepless thinking about someone. Song Zhao hadn't sent her a single message since, and she didn't know how late "I'll be back later" meant.
She put her phone on vibrate and placed it on her bedside table, so that the vibration would be strong enough to wake her up without disturbing Nan Yue.
At 5 a.m., Song Zhao sent her a message telling her that she was back and had something to take care of, and would contact her later.
Nanqi rubbed her sleepy eyes, feeling something was off. She dialed the number, but Song Zhao hung up on her.
"Is it inconvenient?" Nanqi asked tentatively via message.
- Okay, I'll get back to you later.
The words "I'll be back later" only intensified Nanqi's frustration. She knew something bad must have happened to Song Zhao, but to avoid upsetting him, she suppressed her temper and typed "okay."
After sending the message, Nanqi couldn't sleep at all. She started to have all sorts of wild thoughts, wondering if her parents had found out something...
If I go there, won't it make things even harder for her to explain? If I don't go, what if her parents make things difficult for her?
She endured this ordeal until dawn, finally giving up on sleep. She got up, went to the kitchen, grabbed a plate of dumplings to pack, along with a box of peach shortbread and a beautifully wrapped gift box. Before leaving, she sent Wu Hua a text message to tell her she was going to visit Song Zhao's family for the New Year.
When she arrived at Song Zhao's house, she knocked on the door, but there was no answer. Then, she habitually took out her keys.
If her parents ask, just say she left the key at my house and brought it over while we were visiting for the New Year.
Nanqi had finished mentally preparing herself, and her palms were already sweaty.
She inserted the key into the lock, turned it once, and the door creaked open. The living room was empty and clean. She wondered if Song Zhao's words about returning meant something else entirely…
Nanqi put down her things and went to the bedroom, but heard crying. She immediately opened the bedroom door and saw Song Zhao covering her head, curled up in the quilt, crying sadly to herself.
She cautiously approached, intending to remove Song Zhao's blanket, but Song Zhao held on tightly. "Go away, go away..." Song Zhao said, her voice trembling with tears.
Nanqi was stunned. Confused, she asked softly, "Zhaozhao, it's me, Nanqi. What happened?"
"Please go away, okay? Please," Song Zhao said in an almost pleading tone.
Song Zhao's tone left her with no power to refuse. She loosened the blanket around Song Zhao, walked out of the bedroom, gently closed the door, and listened to the crying inside, her chest aching with discomfort.
After squatting for a while, Song Zhao's crying still did not subside. She suddenly stood up, pushed the door open, and pulled the blanket off Song Zhao. Song Zhao was suddenly exposed to the light and hurriedly covered her eyes with her hands, her face covered with tears.
"No, no..."
Ignoring Song Zhao's murmurs, she forcibly pried her hands open and pinned them to the pillow. Their eyes met, filled with sadness and pity.
"Listen to me, you can cry, but you can only cry in my arms! You want to hide away and lick your wounds alone? I'm telling you, that's impossible!"
Song Zhao seemed to be frightened by her domineering tone. She squinted her eyes and shed tears, but remained silent.
Nanqi closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and slowly released Song Zhao's wrist. She put one hand around Song Zhao's neck and the other under her armpit, and lifted her up to sit up.
Song Zhao seemed to be completely powerless, and under the influence of gravity, her face unconsciously fell to Nan Qi's collarbone, and she nestled in her arms.
Nanqi gently stroked Song Zhao's back and softly comforted him, "Alright, I'm here. Cry, cry if you want to."
This sudden gentle voice left Song Zhao completely defenseless. She grabbed Nan Qi's clothes and cried even harder and more unrestrainedly. Finally, she cried until she was exhausted, her tears dried up, and her bright eyes swelled up like walnuts.
Nanqi was worried that Song Zhao would get dehydrated, so she went to the living room to pour her a glass of water. As soon as she put Song Zhao down, Song Zhao hugged her tightly.
"Don't go." Her voice was still choked with sobs.
Nanqi hugged her, patted the back of her head, and said, "I'm not leaving, I'm just going to get a glass of water."
"Then I'll go with you."
Nanqi said gently, "Okay, that works too."
Song Zhao clung to her like a leech, his eyes fixed on her, as if afraid she would run away.
Nanqi put his arm around her waist, almost carrying her away.
"Here, have some water."
Nanqi held the water glass to Song Zhao's lips, and Song Zhao lowered his head and gulped down the whole glass as Nanqi pushed it.
"I'm not drinking anymore."
"good."
Nanqi let Song Zhao hang on her and took her back to bed.
"Do you want to take a nap?" Nanqi asked.
Song Zhao shook his head, looked at Nan Qi, and choked up again, saying, "I almost thought no one loved me anymore, but thankfully I still have you."
Nanqi ruffled her hair, leaned over and kissed her forehead and the corner of her lips, "Zhaozhao, happy birthday, I love you."
Song Zhao smiled slightly at her: "I won't go home anymore, I'll only be with you."
Nanqi hesitated for a moment before saying, "Okay."
“I had a fight with my dad last night over something… a little thing. They moved my things, which I had locked in the cabinet. I don’t know when they changed the locks, and I can’t open them with my key.”
Song Zhao's eyes dimmed. "Those things were left to me by my grandmother, so I'm very angry. They said that I'm not peaceful during the New Year and that I'm deliberately trying to make them unhappy, so I should have just not come back."
"It's their fault."
Do you want me to come with you to bring your things out?
“They’ve already thrown it away. They said it was just junk that took up space…” Song Zhao said, her eyes instantly welling up with tears again.
Nanqi embraced her again, "My Zhaozhao has been wronged. I won't let you suffer like this again, okay?"
Song Zhao softly hummed in agreement. "Nanqi, I love you so much. You must stay with me forever and ever. Please don't leave me."
Nanqi looked into her eyes and said firmly, "No, I won't leave you, not now, and certainly not in the future."
