Chapter 44: Enemy Situation (Part 1)

The group walked with difficulty in the wind and snow, and by the time of You, they had not yet reached the next village. The team had no choice but to stop and find shelter nearby.

The scouting guards found an abandoned village. The villagers here had long since died and scattered. The village was deserted and overgrown with weeds, and most of the houses did not even have a complete wall.

The guards searched the entire village before they found a house that could barely shelter them from the wind and snow.

The house was not big, and there was no need to distinguish between masters and servants at this time. Wei Xiyin ordered all guards except those who needed to be on duty to go into the house to rest.

Soon a bonfire was lit in the house. The hot flames dispelled the cold, and the frozen body gradually felt a little warm.

Qin Shan took out the map, spread it out on the ground, and discussed the route back with Chang Ying.

"The road on Crow Mountain is steep and narrow. Vehicles can't climb the mountain in snowy weather. You can choose to walk along the foot of the mountain." Chang Ying pointed at the map and said, "There are five large villages at the foot of the mountain. We need to borrow the road from these villages."

"Dongwu City is in this direction." Qin Shan had a different opinion. He tapped his finger on the map and said, "If we take a detour from the foot of Crow Mountain, we can actually take the official road directly."

The number of zombies in the village is unknown, and it is not as safe as the official road.

The official road is wide and flat, unlike the bumpy dirt roads in the villages, pushing a cart on it can speed up the journey. Secondly, the area is spacious, so you won't be restricted by the terrain when encountering zombies.

The only drawback is that it is difficult to find a place to stay at night.

Chang Ying said simply and with a startling tone, "From Dongwu to Ling County, there is an official post station along the official road."

The imperial court established an official post station, initially with one postmaster, fifty post soldiers, and twenty miscellaneous servants. In addition to the officials and servants who stopped by to rest, the number of zombies was no less than that.

The two men held different opinions. One thought they should go around the foot of the mountain, while the other thought the official road would be feasible.

Chang Ying turned to look at Wei Xiyin, "What do you think, girl?"

Wei Xiyin stared at the map and thought for a moment, then finally decided, "Take the official road."

Pushing hundreds of carts of food on a detour was a burden for them, and it took them longer to travel.

In addition, the village is full of bumpy roads, and the roads are slippery due to snow, so it is better to take the official road so that you can get back to the fort as soon as possible.

Chang Ying pursed his lips and said no more.

The sky outside gradually darkened and night fell.

Wei Xiyin was struggling over whether to put out the bonfire. It was freezing outside, and without a bonfire to keep warm at night, people would be freezing. If the bonfire was not put out, the fire would most likely attract zombies.

She looked up at Chang Ying, who immediately understood what she meant.

He turned and walked out of the house, taking out a few grain bags from the cart. These bags were brought out when they left the dock, in case they had no place to put the food when looting.

Chang Ying used the old method, hanging grain bags one layer on top of another on doors, windows and gaps to block out the light.

"Those zombies rely mainly on smell and hearing. Now that the wind and snow are getting stronger outside, our scent has long been blown away." He said, "Besides, when we came here, we didn't see any zombies nearby. The girl is being too cautious."

Wei Xiyin said, "It's better to be safe than sorry." Their trip had been going smoothly, and she didn't want anything to go wrong at the end.

Wei Lang beside him was already fast asleep leaning against his sister, not paying any attention to his surroundings. His carefree look was truly enviable.

Xie Ruian was leaning against the wall alone. She turned sideways with her back to everyone and her head against the wall, pretending to be asleep but her mind was working fast.

After following them for only one day, Xie Ruian had already realized that this group of people might not be bandits at all.

She didn't know the other person's identity now, and didn't know whether her choice was right or wrong. The road ahead was uncertain, and she couldn't help feeling uneasy.

The guards on the other side found a place to sit, leaned against the wall, closed their eyes and fell asleep.

After a while, there was no sound in the room except for the flickering reflection of the fire and the crackling sound of burning firewood.

Time passes.

As if in a dream or awake, there was a sudden loud noise outside, accompanied by bursts of screams, which instantly woke up everyone in the room.

"What's going on?"

"What happened?"

Wei Xiyin and Qin Shan spoke at the same time.

In the second half of the night, Chang Ying and twenty guards were on duty outside. The doors and windows were closed, and they could not see what was happening outside at all.

"There's an enemy!" a guard at the door shouted urgently.

As soon as he finished speaking, waves of wild roars followed, and there seemed to be quite a lot of them.

Wei Xiyin's expression changed slightly, "It's a zombie!"

Their people had explored the surroundings before dark and found no trace of zombies. They didn't know where these guys came from.

Everyone suddenly felt like they were facing a formidable enemy. The fifty Jingwei who were resting picked up their weapons, stood up, opened the door and rushed out.

Qin Shan led ten personal guards to guard the doors and windows of the house.

Soon there was a sound of fighting outside.

Wei Xiyin's heart tightened, and she immediately reacted, shouting outside: "Disperse quickly!"

As she spoke, she pulled out Luoxue, woke up Wei Lang and protected him behind her.

More than a hundred people gathered around the small abandoned house. Zombies will only rush here continuously. The house has been in disrepair for a long time and cannot withstand it at all. Only by dispersing them can the pressure be relieved.

At this moment, a scream suddenly came from outside.

Immediately afterwards, a wooden window on one side was knocked open, and a zombie broke through the defense line of the guards outside, broke in through the window and appeared in front of Wei Xiyin and others.

There was a big hole in the wooden window, and the wind and snow rushed in. The temperature in the room dropped sharply. The flames of the bonfire were blown all over the place by the cold wind and were about to go out.
