Chapter 31 A New Journey
June truly marks the arrival of summer, with the weather getting hotter day by day. Qi An could almost hear the cicadas chirping from his window.
The windows of her small apartment were spotless, and the small desk in front of the window was covered only with scratches from the years and her monthly journal spread out on it.
The wardrobe was empty. Looking back at the small house, the only place that was full was her bed—three large bundles and a suitcase were piled on the bare bed board.
Qi An stared at it for a while, a smile playing on his lips, and wrote in the "Monthly Journal":
[Without leaving the base, they fought a major battle and suffered heavy losses.]
The most important takeaways are still two: I seem to have achieved my first and third goals to some extent.
I am now a lieutenant colonel. The captain I absolutely trust is the brigade commander, and Chen Yuezhou, whom I also almost absolutely trust, is the regimental commander.
Although the situation will stabilize later, the new base is located on the border and has unlimited potential. If we have the opportunity to go further, could we control the entire land defense force at this base?
If we can bring out the captain's optimism, then this hope isn't entirely out of the question!
Qi An smiled as he wrote this sentence, a kind of daydreaming smirk. His sense of security had truly increased.
However, she quickly regained her composure and wrote again:
Just keep working towards this goal... Anyway, the captain will work even harder than me.
I also helped Chen Yuezhou.
His gratitude is secondary; the key point is that I truly put into practice the idea of "helping those who are willing to protect me to realize their wishes."
This is truly fulfilling and gives me a great sense of accomplishment!
However, another discovery was that even though my own contamination level had reached 70%, I still wouldn't contaminate others.
But I'm not sure if it's because I don't want to pollute that there's no pollution, or if I simply can't pollute.
Judging "whether or not" by "whether or not" is completely illogical, but the last time I thought about transforming into a white priest, I did indeed transform into the appearance of a white priest.
This time in the warehouse, I considered whether I should transform into an Ash Priest in order to save my life, Chen Xi's life, and Jiang Mo's life.
My skin didn't become fairer, and my appearance seemed unchanged, but it definitely seemed like wings were growing from my back!
Qi An paused, the ink staining a small black dot on the snow-white paper.
When she came to her senses, she saw the black dot, and somehow, the more she looked at it, the more it resembled a black sun...
Qi An hurriedly drew five points on the black dot, turning it into a black star.
She smiled as she looked at the stars, feeling a sense of peace in her heart.
I don't know if the AI controlling those nanodrones is a very powerful combat AI, but I vaguely remember Professor Tang saying that overly intelligent AI can also be corrupted by information.
Before the apocalypse, human AI technology had already developed to the point of being almost out of control.
After the apocalypse broke out, in addition to the spread of the virus, the contaminated AI took advantage of the chaos to spread harmful information through mobile communication devices, which was also one of the sources of the disaster!
This must be a secret. Even if Qi An racked her brains here, she probably wouldn't be able to figure it out, so she kept this question to herself.
Finally, it was written:
I really like the "Guardian" medal, but the "Protector" medal makes me a little apprehensive.
This means greater responsibility, and potentially fiercer battles and more devastating consequences in the future...
The seven people who gave us hope on the third floor of the underground warehouse did not survive...
Qi An was stunned for a moment.
She's been dreaming about those people a lot these past few days, constantly thinking that she was the one who told them to stay on the third floor and not go out...
She cannot protect everyone.
The window frame swayed slightly in the wind. Qi An was jolted awake when a withered leaf was blown to the window, bringing his thoughts back to the main topic:
My name should have already caught the attention of the higher-ups at the North 1 Command.
Having power can protect me, but I currently have too little power and too little strength.
Being noticed by important figures too early is dangerous! The vice-captain also reminded me of this.
So, let's put aside all talk of instability, making great contributions, or taking control of the base's land defense forces... I hope the situation can truly stabilize soon, and we can all have a few years of peace.
By this point, Qi An had filled an entire sheet of paper.
She read it twice, sometimes frowning, sometimes smiling, and then burned it.
Qi An swept up the ashes with chopsticks from the corner, wrapped them in a few scraps of cloth to be thrown away, and opened the door.
The door has been completely replaced.
The new door was made of thick walnut wood and painted with a warm yellow lacquer. An additional layer of solid iron bars was installed on the outside of the wooden door.
Iron bars and wood are secondary; what's truly remarkable is that Chen Yuezhou managed to procure such a large bucket of paint!
Moreover, both doors fit together perfectly, making them sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.
The next person to be assigned to this apartment is really lucky.
Qi An went out, but there were people in the hallway outside the door, quite a few people.
Chen Xi and Chen Yuezhou leaned against the corridor wall on either side, Gu Liansheng was at the top of the stairs, and Zhuang Xiao and Tang Long were in the middle of the stairs. When they saw her open the door, they all took two steps forward.
Zhuang Xiao lamented, "Now, we can't even get a turn to help Sister Qi move her luggage!"
"It's a good thing that many people want to help Sister Qi move her luggage," Tang Long said with a slight smile.
Qi An smiled, threw away the scraps of cloth, and thanked them for letting them in.
Chen Yuezhou and Chen Xi each carried a large bundle. Gu Liansheng wanted to carry one, but was stopped by a look from Chen Yuezhou.
However, when he stopped people, Chen Xi picked up the bundle containing bedding and sheets.
Qi An stuffed the Moon Diary into his tactical backpack, pulled his suitcase, took one last look at the small house he had lived in for three years, and locked the door.
The morning sunlight quietly streamed across the windowsill, the desk, and the white-painted wardrobe.
Everything here is brand new, yet there are many subtle traces that reveal the joys and sorrows a girl left behind here over three years.
The weather was absolutely wonderful; the sky and ground were so blue, it looked like a bowl of azure shaved ice.
A large number of people were waiting at the west gate of the base.
Qi An rushed to Tang Xinying and hugged her.
"Teacher, I'm leaving now. I'll come back to see you whenever I have the chance. You can also move the lab to the new base in the future!" Qi An wanted to say this in a cheerful tone, but when the words came out, he choked up for some reason.
Tang Xinying smiled again, but her eyes seemed to have sand in them, and a layer of mist covered her beautiful eyes.
"Go ahead, a bright future awaits our Xiao Qi!"
"Once you become generals, I'll pack my things and come to join you!"
These words made Qi An laugh again, and Yu Shuang, who was standing next to him, also laughed heartily:
"No problem, no problem, Teacher Tang, just you wait and see! You'll have to come sooner or later!"
Just as Qi An stepped away from Tang Xinying's embrace, Lin Jiaran rushed over and hugged Qi An tightly.
"It's a promise! We'll call each other once a week, and you'll also text me often!"
She pointed to the "Red Conch" messaging app on her phone, and her profile picture: "Little Monster Alliance No. 2".
This person just bought the phone at the Central Plains Base No. 3—it seems to have been obtained in exchange for purifying the shop owner and his family's phones five times.
Seeing Qi An nod vigorously, Lin Jiaran reluctantly stepped back, satisfied.
The people from the new base also returned today, including all the remaining members of the Martial God Team, including the group of drug-carrying warriors who were tricked by Martial God Team 1 and given drugs to bind them in an abandoned mountain village shack.
After being tricked into waking up, these 10 people were so angry they wanted to twist the heads off the Zhou siblings! But when they learned about the disaster that occurred at the Central Plains Base No. 3, they were very relieved.
Both groups boarded the bus one after another.
But Zhao Bohan did stick his head out of the car window and look back at Zhao Bowen and Cheng Xinruo standing inside the iron gate.
Zhao Bowen, who had just recovered from his serious injuries, took two quick steps forward when Zhao Bowen turned around, but then waved his hand at him as if brushing off dust.
Yu Shuang called out to Tang Long, telling him to call her immediately if anything happened at the base, and that she would come to pick him and his sister up as soon as there was a school there.
Tang Long nodded with a smile.
After the convoy passed the gate, the family members at the door downstairs, Zhang Kuanxin standing upstairs with his hands behind his back, and Jiang Mo looking out from the hospital ward window, all drove onto the main road heading west in their sight!
The morning sun shines brightly, and the green of the earth seems to flow freely!
