Chapter 81 The Last Three Minutes
At first, he cried loudly, but later his crying grew softer and softer until finally his voice became hoarse and he couldn't make a sound at all.
As the sun sets, the last rays of sunlight disappear below the horizon.
The streets became deserted, with hardly anyone in sight.
Josie still didn't urge him.
Although she has relatives, it's as if she has none; she doesn't know what kind of pain it is to lose a loved one.
But the bond between the siblings, who supported each other, still gently swayed her cold heart.
"Thank you, sister," the boy said, his tone seemingly changed.
"You helped me before, so I'll help you this time."
"Okay, sister, you go back now, I'm going back too."
He carefully pulled the sack up to cover his sister's face.
"where you go?"
The child paused, "We have accommodation in the tent area."
She has a lot of backbone. Most people would probably bow their heads and ask her for help.
Besides, he had helped me before.
But he wasn't greedy, which she greatly admired.
"Do you want to avenge your sister?"
Suddenly, she asked a question to his retreating figure.
He stopped and looked at her, answering without hesitation, "I will avenge my sister myself!"
"Impulsiveness won't get you revenge, it'll only get you killed." Josie put the dagger back in its sheath. "If you want to take revenge yourself, I'll be waiting for you at the entrance to the safe zone at nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
After saying that, she turned and left without waiting for the boy's reply.
The reason I want to continue helping him is because of his drive; if he can grow stronger, it might be a help to me as well.
As soon as she got downstairs, Zhao Wenjing was waiting anxiously. She only breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Qiao Xi's figure.
"Sister Xixi, you're finally back."
Seeing Zhao Wenjing's worry, Qiao Xi patted her head and said with a smile, "Something came up and delayed me, I'm sorry to have worried you."
"It's alright. My mother-in-law just asked me why I hadn't answered yet, and I didn't know how to answer. Hurry up and come down to wait for you."
After saying that, he affectionately took her arm and walked into the stairwell.
"Sister Xixi, you can't run around like Brother Fengye all day long. What if you run into bad people when you're so beautiful?"
"When you run into bad people, of course the bad people are the ones who suffer," Josie teased her on purpose.
The two chatted and laughed as they returned to their house.
Since Feng Ye wasn't there, after Qiao Xi finished washing up, Zhao Wenjing hugged her pillow and insisted on sleeping with her.
Josie let her lie on her own bed.
"Sister Xixi, do you think the world can ever go back to what it was before?"
In her previous life, she only lived in the apocalypse for three years. Like zombies, humans were also constantly evolving.
She was unsure what the future held.
Even though her view was not optimistic, she did not want Zhao Wenjing to lose hope. "There are more and more people with superpowers, and zombies are no longer invincible. Maybe one day in the future, humans will completely control this world and zombies will no longer threaten us."
"If that day ever comes, that would be wonderful..."
Zhao Wenjing muttered to herself for most of the night before finally falling asleep with her arm around her.
Josie pulled the blanket up to cover her, then closed her eyes herself.
*******
Outside the gate of the safe zone, several zombies were wandering in the distance.
Josie stood quietly in place, having waited for more than twenty minutes, but the small figure still hadn't appeared.
As she waited, she suddenly frowned.
Will that child impulsively seek revenge?
He sighed. What a pity. If he had acted so impulsively, he probably wouldn't have survived long in this apocalypse.
Stare at the street inside the gate, and wait three more minutes.
If he hasn't shown up yet, she won't wait any longer.
Improving her superpowers is of utmost urgency, otherwise what happened to that girl yesterday could happen to her someday.
One minute... two minutes... three minutes...
The child was still nowhere to be seen at the gate.
Josie felt a little disappointed, but she still turned around and walked away.
As she gradually walked out of the vicinity of the safe zone gate, she seemed to hear footsteps behind her, as if she were being chased.
Josie stopped, turned around and saw the boy from yesterday. He was still dressed in tattered clothes, his face was covered in soot, and only his eyes were very bright.
"Sister, you're right. I'm still too weak. I need to become stronger so I can kill them all and avenge my sister."
Josie stared into his wolf-like, fierce eyes. "What's your name?"
"Thank you for your refusal."
How old are you?
Fourteen years old.
Fourteen years old?
Josie was stunned. She thought he was at most eleven or twelve years old, but she didn't expect him to be a teenager.
But he was too thin and looked much smaller than the average child.
"Um."
This child probably didn't have good conditions before the apocalypse, otherwise he wouldn't be so thin and weak.
The apocalypse has only lasted a few months; it won't affect his height.
"Let's go. If you want to avenge your sister, the first thing you need to learn is how to kill zombies. When you can easily kill zombies in a horde without getting scratched, then you can take your revenge."
Xie Jue bit his lip and nodded vigorously.
Just then, a very loud gurgling sound came from Xie Jue's stomach.
He quickly covered his stomach and turned his head to look elsewhere.
Because his face was completely black, his expression was not visible.
Josie looked at his thin frame, reached into her backpack and pulled out the hard bread she had exchanged in the safe zone, as well as a bottle of drinking water in a plastic bottle, and handed it to him.
"Eat..."
Xie Jue didn't reach out to take it, saying, "No need, I'll find it myself when we get into the city."
Josie continued to offer the food, saying, "I believe you can find food on your own, but you don't need to go hungry now. Eat first, and then share with me when you find food."
As she spoke, she forcefully shoved the food into his hand, then turned and walked ahead first.
Not long after, the sound of chewing food came from behind. Josie's lips curled up slightly. What a stubborn little guy.
After walking for several hours, the two arrived at the edge of a nearby small town.
There happened to be a small group of zombies blocking the way.
Upon seeing this, Xie Jue immediately stepped forward and grabbed Qiao Xi's hand, "Sister, there are so many zombies, let's go around them."
Josie glanced at her sideways. "No need. These zombies are perfect for you to practice on."
Xie Jue's expression changed as he stared at the dozen or so zombies in front of him...
He can't even kill one zombie, how could he possibly kill more than ten?
"What, are you scared?"
Noticing Xie Jue's hesitation, Qiao Xi deliberately raised an eyebrow to tease him.
Xie Jue immediately straightened his thin back, and his eyes became firm and resolute.
"I'm not afraid."
"Don't be afraid, just wait."
After Josie finished speaking, she started walking forward.
Xie Jue tried to stop her again, but Qiao Xi was quick and had already approached the zombies.
Xie Jue watched as she threw something into the distance. With a "thud," most of the zombies turned and walked in that direction.
At that moment, Josie rushed forward...
