Chapter Sixty: A Crimson Gaze in His Eyes
Fu Jinxing's pupils contracted, and he was about to crash into it when suddenly a bolt of lightning struck down on his head.
In the distance, a tall figure was rapidly approaching, while the zombies around Josie were struck by bolts of lightning one after another.
The other two superhumans had barely made their move when all the zombies threatening Josie and the others were wiped out.
In the blink of an eye, Feng Ye was already in front of Qiao Xi. "Are you alright?"
Even though he knew that Josh had superpowers and that he could protect himself, he still pulled Josh aside and looked her up and down.
"It's alright, you took care of those zombies as soon as they got close."
Fu Jinxing watched the two of them being intimate as if no one else was around, and his hands, which were hanging by his sides, clenched into fists.
It took immense self-control for her not to reach out and snatch Xixi back from the man's arms.
At that moment, the sound of orderly footsteps rang out.
A group of men in combat uniforms appeared in front of Fu Jinxing.
"Professor Fu, it's not safe here. Please move immediately."
Fu Jinxing's mind wandered, and he nodded casually.
The superhuman standing next to Fu Jinxing said to them, "Go check the area again to see if there are any zombies we missed."
The streets became noisy again, but there was nothing for Josie and her friends to do here anymore.
She glanced at Fu Jinxing and said, "Brother Jinxing, things aren't safe outside. You should have them escort you back to rest. Feng Ye and I are going back too."
As she spoke, she took off the coat she was draped over her shoulders and handed it to him, saying, "Thank you."
Fu Jinxing did not reach out to take it, saying, "It's getting chilly tonight, you should wear it back."
After saying that, Feng Ye took off his coat and draped it over Qiao Xi's shoulders.
Although he didn't say anything, his meaning was very clear.
Fu Jinxing narrowed his eyes, but finally reached out and took the clothes. He concealed the coldness in his eyes and smiled gently. "Okay, Xixi, go back and rest early. See you another day."
"Okay, goodbye, Brother Jinxing."
After saying that, she took Feng Ye's hand and turned to leave...
Fu Jinxing stood still, watching as Qiao Xi linked arms with another man, just like when she used to cling to him and act coquettishly.
He watched them disappear from sight, almost as if in self-torture, his eyes bloodshot...
"We were checked when we came in, so how come there are zombies in the safe zone?"
After turning onto another street, Josie released her grip on Feng Ye's arm, subtly using conversation to cover up her actions.
Feng Ye glanced sideways, taking in all her movements, his eyes darkening.
After waiting for a while without hearing Feng Ye's reply, Qiao Xi turned to look at him and their eyes met.
There was a hint of danger in his eyes.
Just when Josh thought he wouldn't answer him, he spoke up, "It must have been bitten in an inconspicuous place and missed during the inspection."
"The safe zone isn't absolutely safe. Don't fight zombies head-on in the future. Your superpower can easily hide you, Josie."
His implication was that he was asking her why she hadn't done it—was it for that man?
"I feel that this is where I will be living for a period of time in the future, and I don't want it to be contaminated by zombies again. There are only a few now, and I can handle it."
She changed her tone, "But if I don't do anything, in a few hours, how many people in the safe zone will be bitten, and their virus will spread rapidly in the safe zone, and then we will be forced to leave and find a place to live again."
"Isn't it because of that Professor Fu?" Feng Ye stared at her and asked directly.
“No,” Josie paused slightly, then said, “but if he’s in danger, I’ll save him too.”
Fu Jinxing never wronged her; on the contrary, he used to pamper her like a precious gem.
As they spoke, they arrived at the apartment building.
Qiao Xi didn't look at Feng Ye's expression again and stepped into the stairwell first.
It was already very late, and Grandma Chen and Wenjing had both gone to bed. The house was quiet.
Josie was also a little sleepy, so she quickly washed up and went back to her room to lie down.
When Feng Ye came in, his upper body was bare, and water droplets slid down his perfectly sculpted muscles.
"Asleep?"
Josie gave a vague reply.
He walked closer step by step, sat down next to her, and placed a few crystal cores beside her. "Tomorrow, use these crystal cores to exchange for some points for your daily expenses."
Upon hearing about the crystal core, Josie became more alert and opened her eyes to look at him. "You don't usually need many points, so save them for absorption."
At this point, exchanging crystal cores for points is the least cost-effective option.
Feng Ye shook his head and said, "No need, these crystal cores are no longer of much use to me."
These words made Josie reflexively sit up in bed. "It didn't work? You leveled up?"
Feng Ye looked at her reaction and seemed to be in a good mood, raising his eyebrows. "Mm."
A look of envy, jealousy, and hatred flashed across Josie's face.
Why did you level up so easily?
It's only been four months since the apocalypse, and he's already leveled up.
How could she, who couldn't even level up in her previous life, bear this?
Feng Ye's smile faded. "Are you sure you really can't absorb the crystal core?"
Josie nodded, her expression not one of disappointment.
After all, she also had a shortcut: getting close to men, and her superpowers were increasing rapidly, but they couldn't keep up with his rate of improvement.
How could she not be jealous?
She desperately wants to level up; only by becoming stronger can she gain a foothold in this world.
"The zombies outside are evolving faster than humans, and there are more and more evolved zombies near the safe zone."
Feng Ye's expression grew increasingly serious. "Of the zombies I encountered today, two already possessed rudimentary intelligence, understanding how to ambush and cooperate. If humanity cannot advance faster..."
He paused, his eyes darkening. "In the future, humans will only be domesticated and become their food."
This sentence plunged the room into a heavy silence.
Of course, Josie knew that without the support of mutants with superpowers like Feng Ye, humanity wouldn't last long.
"Then you should absorb these crystal cores even more; even a few mosquitoes are still meat."
Feng Ye didn't reach out to take it, but said, "I plan to go out for a few days. I'll go to a more distant place to hunt evolved zombies and obtain crystal cores. Almost all the evolved zombies near the safe zone have already been harvested."
It's not unusual for people with superpowers to frequently go out to find crystal cores to enhance their strength.
She nodded. "Then be careful while you're out alone."
Feng Ye took off his shoes and lay down beside her, then wrapped his long arm around her and pulled her into his embrace. "Okay, go to sleep."
Josie closed her eyes, feeling the flow of supernatural energy within her body, and closed her eyes contentedly.
When she opened her eyes, Feng Ye was no longer beside her.
She didn't go anywhere in the morning. After washing and drying the clothes, she sat at home with her mother-in-law for a while.
"Mother-in-law, Wenjing has been gone for so long, why hasn't she come back yet?"
Grandma Chen also found it strange, "It seems like I've been out for quite a while today."
Josie frowned, stood up, and said, "I'll go out and take a look."
