Chapter 649 The Sun is High in the Sky

Xiao Yi walked slowly alone on the barren land. The ground under his feet was dry and cracked, and the dust was spreading behind him. His figure seemed lonely and resolute, and every step was filled with heavy determination.

Behind me lay the ruins of a city ravaged by apocalyptic disaster. Once towering skyscrapers were now reduced to shattered rubble, their steel and concrete skeletons twisted, as if groaning in pain. Shattered glass shimmered eerily in the setting sun, like the city's final tears.

Collapsed houses piled high, rubble and bricks strewn across the ground in a chaotic scene. Deep cracks pierced the streets, like the earth's gaping maw, ready to swallow everything. Abandoned vehicles lay in a chaotic mess, some burned to their blackened frames, emitting a pungent, burnt smell.

The once bustling commercial streets are now dead, with signs torn down and shops looted, leaving only empty windows and dilapidated storefronts. In the parks, trees are withered, flowers and plants are dead, and benches that once provided a place for people to rest are now dilapidated.

The city's former bustle and vitality were gone, leaving only endless desolation and despair. Xiao Yi, however, walked away from the ruins, step by step, towards the unknown. His back seemed so small in this dilapidated scene, yet full of unyielding strength.

A thick layer of smoke and dust filled the sky, like a heavy gray curtain, enveloping the entire world. The smoke and dust surged like surging waves, never stopping.

The sun struggled to penetrate the thick clouds, like a weary warrior struggling to break through numerous obstacles. Faint rays of light squeezed out from the cracks in the smoke and dust, scattering sporadically, appearing so weak and thin.

The light that fell could not illuminate the earth, but only formed a series of vague pillars of light in the smoke and dust, giving people a sense of illusion and haziness. Within the pillars of light, countless dust particles danced up and down, like a dream, but also revealing an inexplicable desolation.

The sunlight, which should have been bright and warm, became dim and yellow after being blocked and weakened by the smoke and dust, like a dying oil lamp making its last struggle. Everything on earth was painted with a gray hue by this weak light, and people's moods became depressed and heavy.

He was carrying a large and heavy backpack, which felt like a small mountain pressing down on his back. The fabric of the backpack was stretched tightly, and it contained the essential supplies he needed to survive in this apocalyptic world.

From the side, the backpack's outline bulged irregularly, perhaps from the rolled-up sleeping bag tucked into one side, or perhaps from the squeeze of containers filled with food and water. The shoulder straps dug deep into his shoulders, sweat already soaking through his clothes, yet it still couldn't alleviate the heavy burden.

The road beneath his feet was bumpy and uneven, covered with stones of varying sizes and gullies of varying depths. With every step he took, he could feel a sharp, stinging pain in the soles of his feet, the pain of the stones piercing his feet.

When he lifted his foot, the friction of his shoe sole against the ground kicked up a cloud of dust. The dust danced in the dim light like a group of playful elves. Each step he took stirred up new dust, which quickly spread, blurring his figure and making him look even more exhausted and lonely.

Sometimes, he would accidentally step on loose stones, stumble, and nearly fall, but he would always quickly adjust his balance and continue to trudge forward, his determined steps never pausing for a moment, as if as long as he kept going, he would find the dawn of hope.

Xiao Yi's eyes were firm and vigilant, like the cold stars twinkling in the night sky, bright and sharp. His eyes were as deep as the sea, hiding endless determination and courage, as if they could penetrate the thick fog and unknown dangers.

There was no hesitation or confusion in his eyes, only a persistent pursuit of survival. He pursed his lips tightly, and the lines of his face were as firm as iron, revealing an indomitable will.

He didn't know what awaited him ahead: a more ferocious mutant creature, or a more sinister human heart? A dead desert, or an oasis of life? These were all unknowns.

But he knew deeply that stopping would mean death, and only by moving forward could he have hope of survival. This belief was like a fire burning in his heart, never extinguished.

His gaze remained fixed straight ahead, never missing a single possible threat or sign of life. Even if the path ahead was thick with thorns or precipitous cliffs, he never flinched. For in his mind, moving forward was his only option, the only path to survival.

With a firm and vigilant look in his eyes, Xiao Yi took steady and powerful steps, walking towards the unknown front step by step, fearlessly and never giving up.

He lowered his head slightly and tightened the backpack's shoulder straps with both hands, his knuckles turning white from the excessive force. He first pulled one shoulder strap inward to adjust the backpack to fit his back better, then tightened the other shoulder strap, as if this could transform the heavy burden into motivation to move forward.

After doing all this, he took a deep breath, a look of determination flashing in his eyes. Then, without hesitation, he quickened his pace. His originally heavy steps became even more rapid and powerful, raising more dust with each step.

His legs moved faster, his footsteps stomping heavily on the ground, making a "thump thump" sound. His body leaned forward slightly, like an arrow shot from a string, rushing forward recklessly.

As his pace quickened, his breathing became increasingly rapid, but he showed no sign of slowing down. Beads of sweat on his forehead slid down his cheeks, dripping onto the dry ground and disappearing in an instant.
