Chapter 649 The Sun is High in the Sky

Xiao Yi quickened his pace and ran towards the unknown distance with determination. His back was full of desire for survival and expectations for the future.

After leaving the city, the scene in front of Xiao Yi gradually transitioned from ruins to a vast wilderness.

This wilderness seemed a forgotten corner of the world, silent and desolate. Looking up, I saw rolling, withered, yellow grass trembling in the dry wind, as if expressing their helplessness. Sparsely scattered on the grass were a few unknown weeds, most of them withered and shrunken, devoid of life.

In the distance, bare hills stretched out, devoid of trees, only vast expanses of exposed rock, which reflected a dazzling light under the sunlight. The rocks varied in shape, some resembling ferocious beasts, others like lonely giants, adding a somewhat eerie atmosphere to the wilderness.

The ground under his feet was dry and hard, and every step he took made a "crunching" sound, as if protesting Xiao Yi's intrusion. Occasionally, some ruts of varying depths could be seen on the ground. Those might have been traces left by someone who had passed by, but now they had been gradually covered by the wind and sand.

There was no sound of birdsong in the wilderness, nor any sign of animal activity. Only Xiao Yi's own footsteps and breathing echoed in the air. Occasionally, a few crows flew across the sky, making "wa wah" sounds, which added to the desolate feeling of the wilderness.

Xiao Yi was alone in this wilderness, as insignificant as a drop in the ocean. But his gaze remained firm, his steps steady, and he bravely moved forward towards the unknown.

The weeds here were overgrown, like a green ocean, spreading wantonly. The weeds varied in height, some higher than a person's knees, some lower than a person's ankles. They intertwined and clustered together, forming a complex barrier.

The long, thin blades of grass entangled with each other, as if engaged in an endless struggle. Some grass stems were thick and tough, standing straight, while others were slender and soft, swaying in the wind, occasionally whipping people's legs, bringing a slight sting.

The path was blurred and almost unrecognizable beneath the thicket of weeds. Where there might have once been a path, it was now completely overrun by weeds. The ground, mingling with dirt and weeds, formed a series of uneven mounds and gullies, making it impossible to tell where solid ground lay and where a dangerous trap lay.

Occasionally, traces of what appear to be roads can be seen, but they are quickly swallowed up by overgrown weeds, leaving one lost in confusion. The sunlight casts shadows of the weeds, making the already unclear path even more elusive, as if deliberately teasing those who attempt to cross it.

Xiao Yi struggled to move forward in the weeds. Every time he took a step, he had to laboriously push aside the grass in front of him and carefully test the ground under his feet, for fear that he would fall into unknown danger if he was not careful.

Suddenly, without warning, a deep roar came from the nearby woods. The sound seemed to be a roar from the depths of hell, carrying endless anger and threats, instantly breaking the silence of the wilderness.

The roar initially resembled muffled thunder rolling in the distance, deep and heavy, making the eardrums buzz. As the sound approached, the volume grew louder and louder, becoming deafening, as if the entire forest was shaking with it.

Xiao Yi's nerves tensed instantly. He stopped and turned his gaze towards the woods with caution. The sound echoed in the woods, startling a group of birds that were nesting there. They flapped their wings and screamed as they flew into the sky.

The roar shook the branches and leaves in the woods, causing them to rustle. Some dry branches, unable to withstand the force, snapped and fell. Through the gaps in the trees, one could see shadows swaying violently, as if a huge and ferocious creature was approaching at full speed.

The deep roar was interspersed with the sound of heavy breath, and each sound was creepy, as if one could feel the hot air and strong aggressiveness coming out of the creature's mouth. Xiao Yi clenched the weapon in his hand, his heartbeat accelerating rapidly, and he was fully focused on preparing to deal with the unknown danger that was about to rush out of the woods.

When Xiao Yi heard the low roar, his heart suddenly tightened, as if being grasped by an invisible hand. His feet stopped involuntarily, and his body instantly entered a state of high alert.

His eyes became extremely sharp, staring intently at the roaring woods nearby, his ears pricked up, trying to catch more movement. At the same time, his right hand tightly grasped the dagger in his hand, his knuckles turning white from the force.

The dagger in his hand seemed to have become his last lifeline. His fingers pressed tightly against the hilt, feeling the coldness and hardness of the dagger, drawing a sense of security from it. He constantly adjusted his grip, allowing the dagger to strike at the fastest speed at the critical moment.

Xiao Yi's breathing became rapid and heavy, his chest heaving violently. His heartbeat rang in his ears like a drumbeat, and his nervousness caused beads of sweat to appear on his forehead and back, but his eyes remained firm, without the slightest retreat or fear.

At this moment, the whole world seemed to be quiet, with only his heartbeat, heavy breathing, and the terrifying roar coming from the woods.

A massive mutant beast suddenly burst out of the woods, like a bolt of black lightning, charging towards him with overwhelming force. Its body was massive, its muscles bulging, its fur standing up like steel needles, its sharp claws gleaming coldly in the sunlight, and its bloody mouth belched a sickening stench.
