Chapter 720: Troublesome Maneuvers

They first deliberately released false intelligence, misleading the Japanese about the base's strength and defensive deployment. In a darkened backroom, Xiao Yi and his core team members gathered, whispering over every detail of their plan. "Get this forged troop distribution map to the Japanese," Xiao Yi said in a low voice, a sly look in his eyes. One of the team members nodded, took the map, and carefully hid it beneath his clothing. Not long after, on a seemingly unsuspecting occasion, the team member "accidentally" fell under the Japanese's surveillance. He acted panicked, as if desperately trying to hide something. The Japanese seized him as if he had found a treasure, and from his possession they retrieved the carefully prepared fake map. "Haha, their defenses are so weak!" The Japanese commander, examining the map, laughed triumphantly. Back at the base, Xiao Yi and his team closely monitored the Japanese's every move. "According to the plan, we'll spread rumors about a shortage of weapons and equipment," Xiao Yi calmly laid out. Thus, seemingly unintentional "insider information" quietly spread around the base. "I heard we're running low on ammunition." "Yeah, there aren't many heavy weapons left in working order." These rumors reached the ears of the islanders through various channels, further confirming their misjudgment of the base's strength. Xiao Yi and his companions secretly observed the islanders' reactions, waiting for the perfect moment to deliver a fatal blow.

Xiao Yi personally directed the operation, skillfully deploying personnel at various locations to create various false impressions, confusing the enemy. On a dark and windy night, Xiao Yi stood at the window of his command post, his gaze fixed on the inky darkness outside. He held a detailed map with key locations marked on it. "Xiao Li, lead a team to the eastern valley. Periodically light bonfires to create the appearance of large-scale human activity," Xiao Yi instructed a skilled team member. Xiao Li nodded solemnly and quickly led the team off. "Xiao Wang, you will build some fake tents in the southern woods using branches and canvas, and create some noise," Xiao Yi continued to issue orders. Xiao Wang followed his orders and left, moving swiftly and stealthily. Xiao Yi then turned to another team member and said, "Xiao Zhang, take a few men and deliberately leave some new tire tracks on the western road, but be careful not to make them too obvious." Xiao Zhang understood and immediately carried out the task. Xiao Yi himself would frequently appear at various locations, personally inspecting and adjusting the arrangements. In the eastern valley, campfires flickered, as if a large group of troops were resting. In the southern woods, fake tents loomed in the moonlight, their occasional noises stirring suspicion. On the western road, seemingly mysterious wheel tracks stretched into the distance, inviting speculation. Enemy scouts were bewildered by these illusions, reporting conflicting intelligence that left the enemy commander utterly bewildered, completely unable to grasp Xiao Yi and his men's true intentions and troop deployments.

Amidst the enemy's tentative attacks, Xiao Yi led his troops on a swift retreat, leaving them empty-handed. As the enemy's vanguard cautiously approached the area where Xiao Yi and his men were stationed, Xiao Yi had already sensed their movements. He moved nimbly through the ranks, his voice low but decisive, commanding: "Everyone, move quickly, pack lightly, and leave no trace!" The troops quickly gathered their essential supplies and methodically began their move along the designated route. Xiao Yi walked at the end, vigilantly observing his surroundings to ensure no one was left behind. They moved swiftly along the winding path, their steps light and quick, traversing dense jungle and crossing turbulent streams, avoiding open areas that might reveal their whereabouts. The enemy gradually approached their original encampment, only to be greeted by silence. The tents were empty, and there was no sign of human activity. "Damn it! They've escaped again!" the enemy commander roared in anger, and the soldiers looked at each other in bewilderment. Meanwhile, Xiao Yi's team had already stopped in a safe area several miles away. Looking at his exhausted but determined teammates, Xiao Yi felt a surge of satisfaction and pride. "Everyone's doing great! The enemy has been left behind for now, but we can't let our guard down," Xiao Yi encouraged them. The team nodded in agreement, and after a brief rest, they prepared for the next challenge, knowing they still had a long way to go in this battle against the enemy.

They exploited the base's complex terrain, playing a game of hide-and-seek with the enemy, draining their energy and supplies. The base was surrounded by rolling hills, dense jungle, and crisscrossing ravines. Xiao Yi led his team through this labyrinthine terrain with remarkable agility. Sometimes, they hid in deep valleys, shrouded in thick fog, completely obstructing the enemy's view. Xiao Yi signaled silence to the team members, who held their breath, controlling even their breathing to the tiniest degree. The enemy's footsteps lingered outside the valley, but their location remained undetermined. Sometimes, they hid in the dense jungle, where branches and vines intertwined. The team members skillfully camouflaged themselves with branches and leaves, blending in with the surroundings. When the enemy entered the jungle, all they heard was the rustling of leaves in the wind, but no one was visible. Then there were the winding caves, narrow and branching. Xiao Yi led his team through them with ease, while the enemy, once inside, quickly lost their way and continued to circle. Every time the enemy thought they had discovered their tracks and excitedly gave chase, they discovered only deliberate misdirection, such as a few messy footprints leading to the edge of a cliff, or a few pieces of tattered clothing hanging from a tree branch. In this game of hide-and-seek, the enemy was fooled around. The long search left them exhausted, and their supplies dwindled. Xiao Yi and his men, however, waited for the perfect opportunity to strike back.
